Led by pacesetters such as Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, and Bobby Bare, artists in Nashville and Austin demanded the creative freedom to make their own country music, different from the pop-oriented sound that prevailed at the time. This exhibition also examines the cultures of Nashville and fiercely independent Austin, and the complicated, surprising relationships between the two. Artwork by Sam Yeates, Rising from the Ashes, Willie Takes Flight for Austin (2017) 3-6 Introduction 3 This interdisciplinary lesson guide allows classrooms to explore the exhibition Outlaws and Armadillos: Country’s Roaring ‘70s on view at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum® from May 25, 2018 – February 14, 2021. Students will examine the causes and effects of the Outlaw movement through analysis of art, music, video, and nonfiction texts. In doing so, students will gain an understanding of the culture of this movement; who and what influenced it; and how these changes diversified country music’s audience during this time.

This is the ultimate Neil Diamond record. Not necessarily the best -- he's at his most appealing crafting in the studio -- but certainly the ultimate, capturing all the kitsch and glitz of Neil Diamond, the showman. And that also means that it's not just loaded with flair, but with filler, songs like "Porcupine Pie," "Soggy Pretzels," and "And the Grass Won't Pay No Mind" -- attempts to write grand, sweeping epics that collapse under their own weight. Still, that's part of the charm of Diamond and while it can sound unbearable on studio albums, it makes some sense here, surrounded by his pomp and circumstance. That spectacle is the great thing about the record, since it inflates not just his great songs, it gives the weaker moments character.

  • Upland Oak and Red Maple: Community Response and Ecosystem Effects in the Presence and Absence of Fire Disturbances
ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION Heather Dawn Alexander The Graduate School University of Kentucky 2008 UPLAND OAK AND RED MAPLE: COMMUNITY RESPONSE AND ECOSYSTEM EFFECTS IN THE PRESENCE AND ABSENCE OF FIRE DISTURBANCES ______________________________________________ ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION ______________________________________________ A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Kentucky By Heather Dawn Alexander Director: Dr. Mary A. Arthur, Professor Lexington, Kentucky 2008 Copyright © Heather Dawn Alexander 2008 ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION UPLAND OAK AND RED MAPLE: COMMUNITY RESPONSE AND ECOSYSTEM EFFECTS IN THE PRESENCE AND ABSENCE OF FIRE DISTURBANCES FIRE Shifts in forest canopy composition are increasingly common due to invasive pests and pathogens, climate change, and altered disturbance regimes. Development of restoration strategies aimed at mitigating these changes is critical, but research should also assess ecosystem-level implications given failed or limited restoration efforts. In historically oak-dominated forests of the eastern U.S., fire suppression has increased competition from fire-sensitive species, leading to decreased understory light and oak (Quercus spp.) regeneration problems. Prescribed fire is often used to remedy these conditions and encourage oak establishment and growth, but the efficacy of this strategy remains questionable. This dissertation describes changes in understory light and upland oak and competitor seedling survival, growth, and foliar morphology and chemistry in response to single and repeated (3x) prescribed fires over a 6-yr period (2002-2007) within eastern Kentucky. Prescribed fires led to high mortality and reduced growth of white oaks (Leucobalanus spp.), but a single burn with high burn temperatures and overstory mortality enhanced red oak (Erythrobalanus spp.) seedling growth.
