Native American POLYTHEISM - (animism, pantheism) Native American tribes have maintained numerous mythologies regarding deities throughout their histories. Native American belief systems include many sacred narratives . Such spiritual stories are deeply based in Nature and are rich with the symbolism of seasons, weather, plants, animals, earth, water, sky & fire. Deities play a large part in these narratives. Before the 'White Man' came trampling all over the land, the native tribes and nations of what would one day become America had all the space in their world. They made good use of it, living close to nature in what might seem to modern society like a glorious camping vacation. If you ignore the constant threat of starvation and war. Living so close to nature, you could see into the souls of animals — such as the BEAVER and BADGER — as they went about their business. You could feel WAUKHEON the Thunder Bird fixing the weather, and revel in the rascality of RAVEN , MANABOZHO and COYOTE with their tantalizing tricks. The Native American peoples had (and still have) a huge respect for nature. Animal spirits in particular were very powerful and it was necessary to thank them and placate them if you wanted to make a meal of them. When corn arrived courtesy of the deities, it was also given its due measure of respect. The thought of organic free-range food sounds alluring, but hunting wasn't as easy as getting up in the morning, taking a stroll and shooting a few passing bison with your bow. Even Plains societies who lived off the prolific buffalo fell under the threat of starvation at times. -

Abstract This dissertation develops a concept of mnidoo-worlding, whereby consciousness emerges as a kind of possession by what is outside of ‘self’ and simultaneously by what is internal as self-possession. Weaving together phenomenology, post structural philosophy and Ojibwe Anishinaabe orally transmitted knowledges, I examine Ojibwe Anishinaabe mnidoo, or ‘other than human,’ ontologies. Mnidoo refers to energy, potency or processes that suffuse all of existence and includes humans, animals, plants, inanimate ‘objects’ and invisible and intangible forces (i.e. Thunder Beings). Such Anishinaabe philosophies engage with what I articulate as all-encompassing and interpenetrating mnidoo co-responsiveness. -

Here, alumni, parents, colleagues and friends share memories and reflections of his extraordinary impact on this community. Through John’s gifts, people not only experienced music of the highest caliber, but were also drawn deeper into the mystery of God. For all of us, John’s death was a terrible shock. It has caused us to reflect on how fragile life can be. Even as we have moved forward at the Choir School, we continue to miss him and entrust him to God’s care and protection. I invite you to share in our common life through these pages. –Charles F. Wallace, Headmaster IN MEMORIAM EXCERPTS FROM FATHER MEAD’S HOMILY AT JOHN SCOTT’S FUNERAL Evensong and a recital of Buxtehude. I asked John, who was then forty-seven but had been at St. Paul’s since his mid-twenties, would he be interested in coming to Saint Thomas? He would be interested, he replied, but that if I would please understand he would like not to have to apply. Very well; would he give me his resume? Yes, he would. This was pure John. As John prepared to leave St. Paul’s, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth made him a Lieutenant of the Victorian Order (LVO) for his distinguished services to the Crown at London’s great cathedral, where John led the music for many royal and state occasions – not to mention the daily round of choral evensongs and other liturgies. -

Oxford Oxford Associates, Huntsville, AL, USA [email protected] Abstract This article presents two foreign or second language (L2) learner histories represent- ing the extreme ends of the spectrum of learner well-being. One story reflects the very positive learning experiences of a highly strategic learner, while the other story focuses on a less strategic learner’s negative, long-lasting responses to a single trau- matic episode. The theoretical framework comes from the concept of well-being in positive psychology (with significant adaptations). In addition to contrasting the two cases through the grounded theory approach, the study suggests that the adapted well-being framework is useful for understanding L2 learning experiences, even when the experiences are negative.
