    Seventh International Medieval Chronicle Conference University of Liverpool 7th-10th July 2014 ABSTRACTS Session 1a Narrative & Memory: The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle(s), 937-55 Alaric A Trousdale Scholars have long recognized that the group of texts commonly referred to as the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle is not a single account, but a mélange of sources composed at different times and at different locations. Scholars have argued over the nature of how individual annals were recorded; the information for certain years can appear as though it was written contemporaneously, while other years’ entries can appear as though written with retrospection. Some recent debates have revolved around the question as to whether the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle should be conceived as a series of annals composed and directed by a centralized authority close to the royal court, or a more relaxed and dispersed methods of recording certain years’ events. This paper examines the ASC’s annals for the mid tenth-century with these considerations in mind, and seeks to shed new light on the relationships between the recensions. The annals in the ASC for these years illustrate several aspects of the present debate, with evidence of both centralized contemporary composition as well as external (i.e. non-royal) composition from hindsight, suggesting a more plastic interpretation of tenth-century chronicling. The paper also addresses the nature of several conspicuous blank annals. While the ASC in the tenth century was indeed likely the composition of those closest to the king, annals left blank could represent not a loss of material, but a conscious omission on the part of said chroniclers.

SUTTON AND LIVIA VISSER—FUCHS A YOUNG MAN 0F NOBLE FAMILY, such as Richard himself, was surrounded from the day he was born with the panoply of chivalry: halls would be hung with weapons and amour and hunting trophies, almost every story he was told concerned feats of arms, and the books he knew might be illustrated with dramatic battle-scenes and colourful heraldry. Larger-than-life heroes killing their enemies with one stroke, or surrounded by the rewards of success, fine tents and richly caparisoned horses, were commonplace in the historiated sequences of tapestries, in great palaces. Subjects included the stories of Jason, Hector, Arthur, Charlemagne, Guy of Warwick, as well as the military heroes of the Old Testament. " A nobly-born youth was considered to have an innate inclination towards ‘chivalry’ from which nothing could deflect him. Even if he were brought up among peasants he would show his true nature in the end; The stories and ceremonies of chivalry were supposed to act upon him as the scent of game on a hound. The hero of Blanchardyn and Eglantine was just such a young man. He was brought up by his father, the King, in ignorance of war, military heroes, heraldry or jousting, and instead taught ‘lytterature’, ‘good manners’, grammar, logic and philosophy, with ‘tables’, chess, and hunting and hawking as his ‘passetymes’. He excelled at all these, but nevertheless longed for something that was missing. The inevitable happened: . walkynge wythin the paleys. An initial chapter on geography serves as a setting both for this and for the companion volume on Modern France. The volume is the work of ten writers, of whom, as was inevitable, a considerable majority are Frenchmen. To the ready and generous cooperation of these latter special thanks are due, particularly to M. Langlois, to whom the heaviest task has fallen. In his chapter on the political history of France the reader may trace the gradual development of the monarchy from Hugh Capet, who had practically no power outside his own province of the Ile-de-France and the neigh- bouring districts, to Charles VIII, of whom, while still a boy, Philippe de Commines declared that he was "more feared and better obeyed and served by his subjects than any other prince on the earth." He said this with reference to the meeting of the States-General at Tours in 1484, which, representing, as it did, every province except Brittany, gave a signal proof of that unity which has ever since been France's greatest strength.
