As you approach the heritage building on the Santa Rosa campus, it may look as it has for the last eighty years. But as you mingle with other patrons in the redesigned outdoor space and walk across the terrace to the new lobby, you can feel the anticipation of experiencing something dramatically different.

ifty years ago, a humble boy from Hong Kong left all he had ever known to come to the US to pursue higher education and a better life. Like his three older brothers, Vincent Ling enrolled at SRJC.

Far from home and barely speaking English, he was welcomed by Margaret Brown Trussell, then instructor and Dean of Women at SRJC. She provided room, meals, resources, guidance and a sense of family to international students like the Ling brothers transitioning to a new country. HONORING OUR FUTURE Vincent later transferred to UC Berkeley where he completed both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in computer science. hen individuals and companies face property damage due to water, fire, mold or trauma, local company Bravo Restoration & Construction provides full-service emergency response and restoration services. And when homeowners were affected by the Northern California wildfires, BRC came to the rescue with free fire damage assessments. BRC CEO and recent SRJC graduate Nicole Humber says, “It is our job to be heroes to our clients.” After 12 years of balancing coursework, fulltime work and parenthood, Nicole went from working for BRC to being the company owner - while obtaining her associate degree at SRJC. “I couldn’t have done it without the scholarships, the flexibility of online and evening classes, the encouragement of faculty and staff when the going got really tough. n August of each year, the SRJC Foundation and the Scholarship Office host the “Circle of Honor Scholarship Reception,” a special event to recognize the generosity of scholarship donors and the hard work and dedication of student scholarship recipients. Last year’s event celebrated 150 donors whose financial support provided over 2,300 individual scholarships.

rina (Irene) Spiegel was born in 1918 during the Russian Revolution, immigrating to the in the 1950s. She worked for many years as a draftsman/architect at Bechtel Engineering in San Francisco before retiring in Calistoga.

She had a special appreciation for those in the nursing profession and was inspired to support future nurses.
