XXVIII, NO. 4 (WINTER 2019) Immediately after signing the Treaty of Trianon, an intense revisionist media campaign was launched, claiming the Hungarian rights over the territories lost in 1920. Thus, in 1896–1899, Hungarian historian Benedek Jancsó propounded a theory whereby the large number of Romanians in Transylvania was allegedly due to the massive immigration of Wallachians from the two extra-Carpathian principalities (Moldavia and Wallachia) in the 17th and especially 18th centuries, who tried to escape the excessively high taxes imposed during the Phanariot period. This theory was taken up, after the treaty had been signed, in an Eng- lish-language work on Transylvania (Ajtay et al. 1921), in A román irredentista mozgalmak története (The history of Romanian irredentist movements) (1920), and in Erdély története (The history of Transylvania) (1923), all these writings being refuted with scientific arguments and following field research undertaken by the Romanian geographer Ion Conea (1941; 1942 a, b). Another representative work on this subject (Ethnographical Map of Hun‐ gary Based on the Density of Population) is authored by Count Pál Teleki, geog- rapher and former prime-minister of Hungary, who presented it at the Paris Peace Conference (1920). Later on, at the Second Vienna Arbitration (1940), where they decided on the annexation of Northern Transylvania to Hungary, István Tarnóczi presented a map of Hungarian territories annexed by Roma- nia on the basis of the Trianon decision (Deicã 1999, 36). Within the same context, András Korponay (1941) showed that border tracing is not a ques- tion of surface area, but of population, launching an appeal to a rapid birthrate growth (Golopenþia 1942, 25–33). Along the same lines we can also mention Péter Vida’s title, “The Carpathian Basin Should Be Populated by Hungari- ans” (1941), the author suggesting both an increase in birthrate and the re- turn of the Hungarians living abroad. These ideological theses lay at the ba- sis of the reprisals taken against the Romanian population during September 1940–October 1944. That same period witnessed the studies produced by András Ronai, the author endeavoring to justify Hungary’s rights over the ter- ritories lost at the end of World War I (Deicã 1999). The end of the Second World War and the instauration of Kremlin-loyal communist regimes in Bucharest and Budapest brought Hungary’s revision- ist demands to a standstill, concealing them behind a policy of understanding and neighborly relations between the two friendly countries (Berend and Buga- ric 2015). However, as of 1970, Hungary’s geopolitics became ever more vo- cal against the Central European “border opening” concept. It is the period in which writings re-substantiating the ideas of the “Carpathian Basin” relying on “Greater Hungary” and of Hungarian-inhabited regions started being published. This concept would later (1993) be used in outlining the Carpathian Euroregion (Deicã and Alexandrescu 1995; Deicã 1999–2000), the Hungarian ethnic bloc and the Hungarian community in Transylvania (Kocsis 1994 and 1997). PARADIGMS • 5 In 1990, with the collapse of the communist regimes, interethnic tensions would surge in both countries, reactivating political and social nationalistic movements (Nedelcu and DeBardeleben 2015). As early as the 1990s, the first civic political organization, the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania, came into being with the aim of representing the interests of the Hungarian community in Romania. In order to counteract the Hungarian activists, a cul- tural organization, Vatra Româneascã (The Romanian Hearth), was founded, and after a month they set up its political wing, namely, the Romanian National Unity Party. BUKOVINIAN STATESMAN AND DIPLOMAT Oleksandr DOBRZHANSKYI Yurii Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University (Ukraine) E-mail: [email protected] Abstract: The article is dedicated to the study of the political biography of Nikolaj von Wassilko, a well-known Bukovinian leader, one of the most controversial personages among Ukrainian politicians of Austria-Hungary at the end of the 19th – the beginning of the 20th century. It is worth mentioning that many scientists from various countries wrote about N. Wassilko, but separate studies about his life and political activities have not been written yet. Author paid considerable attention to the formation of N. Wassilko's political views, the evolution of his preferences from conservative Rusynism and Moscophilia philosophy to the populistic doctrine. Since the beginning of the 20th century, N. Wassilko became almost the sole leader of Ukrainians in Bukovina. The article presents the analysis of his activities in the Austrian Parliament, the Diet of Bukovina, public organizations, and his initiatives to resolve various regional issues. His activities in the years of World War I were equally rich. In particular, the article shows his diplomatic activities as the ambassador of the ZUNR (West Ukrainian People's Republic) in Vienna, the ambassador of the UPR (Ukrainian People's Republic) in Switzerland and other countries. At the end of the research, the author points out the remarkable path of N. Wassilko in the history of the Ukrainian movement in Bukovina in the early twentieth century, as one of the central figures of the Ukrainian diplomacy during 1918-1924.

The evergreen valleys boasted forests of beech, oak, ash, spruce, birch and fir. The area produced grain, sugar beets, cattle and sheep and the farm crops included potatoes, walnuts, chestnuts, corn, rye, oats, barley, flax, wheat, apples, pears, plums, peaches, cherries, grapes, and other berries. Lumber and wood, minerals, salt and petroleum were also products of Bucovina, the most densely settled province of Romania. In 1913 there were 200 people per square mile and 800,000 people in the whole of Bucovina.

The Promised Land Company, later known as Maryhill, Washington, eventually failed due to irrigation difficulties and a world war. Left in this wake was a huge Grecian-doric castle museum, dedicated to international art; a replica of England’s Stonehenge, dedicated to peace; and a colorful history of our people: a queen, a Folies Bergere denseuse, a sugar heiress, and an empire builder. The story of the castle begins in 1913 and continues today. Samuel Hill executed plans for the building of a castle on a rocky promontory high above the second largest river in the United States. Mr. Hill, a strange mixture of cosmopolite and farmer, intended to use his castle as a residence for entertaining illustrious friends and royalty. He was anxious to show them the beauties of the West and to return, in a good manner, the hospitality that had been extended to him. For his good friend, King Albert, Samuel had the Belgian crest engraved above the doors.

That gave Princess Marie the opportunity to prove to the whole country for the first time and to herself her extraordinary qualities of best organizer in the most dangerous place of the war the cholera camp at Zimnicea. Key words: Balkan wars, cholera camp, flying hospital. All of the biographers who have written about Queen Marie of Romania consider that the Crown Princess always wanted her people’s love. But it was during the participation of Romania at the so-called Second Balkan War 10th July-10th August 1913 when she discovered the fulfilment of earning in selfless service. It was the turning point in her life (Elsberry, 1972: 91; the same point of view is adopted in Pakula, 1984: 205–208). The future queen explained later the events at the end of the Romanian Army campaign in Bulgaria that put her into contact with the horrors of the war: “It resulted in no battles, but whilst on enemy's ground our troops encountered as deadly a foe as cannons—cholera. I was brought into sudden contact with this terrible scourge when I went to visit the troops and the Red Cross hospitals scattered along the Danube. I cannot help looking upon this as a turning point in my life.

In the last decades of the 19th century, the Romanian national movement from Austrian Bukovina turned from cultural stage into political phasis. Initially, Romanian political organizations were included into federalist or autonomist currents from Austro-Hungarian Empire. Politically, according to multidimensional theory, Romanian parties belong to the cleavage entitled Center/ Periphery, but also Church-State and Employers-Workers cleavages.

While Romanian and Ruthenian activists stressed their claims of ‘indigeneity’ once they mobilised their nationalisms in the political arena, in spite of how challenging it sometimes was to substantiate these claims, the majority of Jewish and non-Jewish German speakers had clearly entered the scene after – and because of - the Austrian occupation of the territory.
