SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 547

1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE AND PUBLIC 2 SERVICE OF FORMER SUNFLOWER COUNTY SUPERVISOR MRS. MARY JEAN 3 STRONG KENT OF INDIANOLA, . 4 WHEREAS, Mrs. Mary Jean Strong Kent, who was a respected 5 educator, administrator and civic leader in the City of Indianola, 6 Mississippi, passed away on January 7, 2009; and 7 WHEREAS, Mary Kent served Sunflower County as a member of the 8 Board of Supervisors, representing District Two from January 5,

9 2004, until her death on January 7, 2009. Prior to her serving

10 Sunflower County, Mrs. Kent retired from the Indianola Separate 11 School system as the Principal of Gentry High School. Before 12 taking the position of Principal, Mrs. Kent served many years as 13 an English teacher at Gentry High School. After her retirement 14 with the Indianola Separate School system, she taught English at 15 Mississippi Delta Community College; and 16 WHEREAS, Mary attended public school in Moorhead and 17 Indianola. She furthered her at Mississippi Valley

18 State College, Delta State and Jackson State Universities; and 19 WHEREAS, Mary served on the Chamber of Commerce Board, South 20 Delta LEO Board and participated in Indianola Summit. She served 21 as President of the Regalettes Social and Civic Club and a member 22 of the Crepe Myrtle Garden Club and a founding member of the 23 Sunflower County Unified Christian Organization (SCUCO) and served 24 as Vice Chairman of Distribution Committees; and 25 WHEREAS, Supervisor Kent faithfully and diligently discharged

26 the duties of her office, rendering invaluable service to the 27 county and to the citizens of District 2 with honesty and

No. 547 *SS01/R1392* N1/2 09/SS01/R1392 PAGE 1 28 integrity, and her support, service and friendship are and will be 29 missed by all; and 30 WHEREAS, the Sunflower County Board of Supervisors served as 31 Honorary Pallbearers along with the Deacons of Pleasant Missionary 32 Baptist Church in Indianola, which indicates the deep respect of 33 her community; and

34 WHEREAS, it is with sadness that we note the passing of this 35 respected Mississippi citizen: 36 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF 37 MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That 38 we do hereby commend the life and public service of former 39 Sunflower County Supervisor Mrs. Mary Jean Strong Kent of 40 Indianola, Mississippi, and express to her surviving family our 41 sympathy on her passing.

42 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to 43 the surviving family of Mrs. Kent, forwarded to the Sunflower 44 County Board of Supervisors and made available to the Capitol 45 Press Corps.
