Manuel Vázquez Montalbán Introducción 11 1. INTRODUCCIÓN La presente investigación se centra en el análisis de las ceremonias de masas celebradas durante la dictadura franquista en España. Dentro de este análisis, se tendrán en cuenta los elementos más importantes y defnitorios de los eventos que marcaron el lenguaje audiovisual de los años de gobierno de Franco entre 1939 y 1975. El documento es un recorrido historiográfco en torno a la comunica- ción del régimen dictatorial español a través de una serie de grandes eventos organizados por las estructuras del poder franquista. Se han escogido aquellos que vertebran la imagen de la dictadura a lo largo de más de tres décadas. Las ceremonias de masas organizadas por Franco y sus correligio- narios conformaron una impresionante y sorprendente imagen de un régimen que era capaz de hacer olvidar el hambre y la miseria que se vivía en el país en momentos concretos como la visita de mandatarios internacionales o eventos religiosos. Estas concentraciones ceremo- niales, que reunían a miles de personas, se valían de gran cantidad de elementos para hacer más grandilocuente la imagen de un régi- men personalista. Se trata, además, de una investigación útil y novedosa puesto que arroja luz sobre ciertos elementos –que más adelante se desarrollan en el cuerpo de la tesis– utilizados en la organización de eventos de masas que ayudaron a la dictadura franquista a mantener una imagen cargada de simbolismo de cara al pueblo. Una imagen, como se verá, especialmente estudiada y centrada en la personalización del dicta- dor y sus estructuras sociales, religiosas, militares y paramilitares, así como en la política falangista. Esta tesis profundiza en la utilización de elementos que permitieron poner en valor los distintos espacios durante las celebraciones de ma- sas. Es decir, aquellas imágenes, sonidos, iluminaciones, etc… que dotaban de un sentido propio al discurso de dichos eventos. 12 Movilizaciones de masas del franquismo La conclusión general de este documento científco es que las cere- monias de masas celebradas durante la dictadura franquista en Espa- ña se organizaron acorde a una serie de elementos similares que se asemejan entre sí, por lo que se mantuvo un discurso megalómano y kitsch a lo largo de los más de 36 años de régimen dictatorial de Francisco Franco. 1.1. Antecedentes de la investigación El fenómeno de las movilizaciones de masas del franquismo hay que abordarlo necesariamente desde una perspectiva temporal y de re- lación determinada. Por lo que se refere al primero de los aspectos, el espacial, hay que señalar que esta investigación se circunscribe al ámbito español, lo cual no es óbice para que, en determinados mo- mentos de la investigación, se aluda a ámbitos espaciales de carácter internacional (principalmente la Italia fascista y la Alemania nazi) o local, con el fn de obtener una visión más amplia y precisa del objeto de investigación en términos comparativos.

    Embodying public opinion: from petitions to mass meetings in nineteenth-century Portugal1 Diego Palacios Cerezales2 Abstract The establishment of representative government in Portugal implied the free participation of the citizenry in the formation of public opinion. The right to petition was initially understood as an individual form of participation, but soon it would be practiced through public gatherings, marches and other displays of the collective will of a multitude. Initially, most of those forms of popular participation were identified with riots and insurrections, but during the second half of the nineteenth century, the public meeting became institutionalized. This paper explores the process whereby political campaigns based on drafting petitions, collecting signatures, and holding public meetings became a legitimate political form. In some sections freedom of movement is greatly hindered, especially if we happen to be sharecroppers on the cotton plantations in the South. All over America we know what it is to be refused admittance to schools and colleges, to theatres and concert halls, to hotels and restaurants... We know Jim Crow [railroad] cars, race riots, lynchings, the sorrows of the Scottsboro boys. In America, Negroes do not have to be told what fascism is in action. We know. Its theories of Nordic supremacy and economic suppression have long been realities to 1 us. The writer and social critic Langston Hughes delivered these words in a speech entitled “Too Much of Race” on July 17, 1937. He spoke before an audience of the Second International Writers Congress in Paris, France that included a tremendous array of literary luminaries from around the world. Within weeks he would enter the country of Spain, where a revolution and civil war had exploded into international view exactly one year before Hughes presented these words. This conflict in the large but economically weak country of Spain literally galvanized millions of people worldwide to predominantly advocate on the one hand—a social revolution for workers and peasants in Spain that could potentially spread elsewhere, or the other—a fascist victory for the Spanish General Francisco Franco and his prominent material and ideological supporters, Germany’s Adolph Hitler, Italy’s Benito Mussolini, and Portugal’s Antonio Salazar.

    Virgin Spain: The History of a Book and Its Translation Juan Jesús Zaro Universidad de Málaga [email protected] The history of the successive editions (1927, 1930, 1941, 1947, 1950, 1963, 1989) of León Felipe’s translation of Waldo Frank’s Virgin Spain is inexorably linked to the history of the country as described in the original. While the 1927 first edition was warmly welcomed by the target culture (the Spain of the 1920s), the book’s ideological complexity and the ambiguous personality of the translator himself made it possible to publish editions in both South America and Franco’s Spain: two appeared in Argentina (in 1947 and 1958) that purported to denounce Spain’s fascist regime, and two others in Madrid (in 1950 and 1963) which tried to make use of the book for political propaganda, even though it was censored. España virgen is a unique case of ideological appropriation by means of such diverse instruments as paratexts, omissions, additions and translation shifts. Sadly, a complete Spanish version of Waldo Frank’s second edition of the book (1941) has yet to be published. 1. Introduction This paper is concerned with the complex history of León Felipe’s translation of Waldo Frank’s Virgin Spain. Its successive editions (the first in 1927) are testimony of the impact it made in various periods of Spanish history as well as of the existence of two target readerships after the Spanish Civil War: The first of these –Spaniards in exile– had access to the second edition of the original, published with slight changes in Buenos Aires in 1947 and 1958.
