Illustrated Regulations for Ceremonial Paraphernalia of the Qing Dynasty 皇朝禮器圖式 Ca Illustrated Regulations for Ceremonial Paraphernalia of the Qing dynasty 皇朝禮器圖式 ca. 1780-81 or later. Album; ink, color on silk; 44.1 x 45.2 cm. Mactaggart Art Collection 2004.19.1 Chapter 6, Imperial Hats and Robes, Part 3: Court dress for the Empress Dowager and Empress 卷六,冠服三 The Ministry of Board of Rites produced a manuscript copy in 1756. In 1759 the Qianlong Emperor ordered the book to be edited and expanded, and published at the imperial press (the Wuyingdian), which resulted in the print version published in 1766. The book was then revised a second time for inclusion in the imperial encyclopedia Siku quanshu (Complete Books of the Four Treasuries), completed in 1796, and expanded from 18 to 28 chapters (juan). Margaret Medley suggests that several fair copies of the illustrated album existed. It appears that these included only the original 18 chapters. The illustrated chapters on court costume for the imperial dowager and empresses in the Mactaggart Collection were viewed by the Qianlong emperor in or sometime after 1780-81 (and possibly date to that year), as indicated by his seal “Seal of the Son of Heaven Enjoying the Happiness of Having Five Generations under One Roof in His Seventies.” A second seal, the Yuanmingyuan seal, as well as the leather-bound gold-stamped box in which the album was stored (the title of which says “Costume of the Court of the Chinese Emperor Ch’ien Lung: The Original Paintings from the Summer Palace, Pekin, 18th Cent.”), indicate that the album most probably was kept in the Summer Palace (Yiheyuan), close to the Yuanmingyuan, until 1860. There are six sections in the 18 volumes: • ritual vessels (bronzes, jade, porcelain, lacquered wood) caiqi 蔡器 (2 volumes); • astronomical instruments to determine auspicious dates for ceremonies and festivals yiqi 儀器 (1 volume); • hats and robes guanfu 冠服 (4 volumes; the Mactaggart Art Collection includes 1 of these 4 volumes); • musical instruments yueqi 樂器 (3 volumes); • imperial household insignia lubu 鹵簿 (3 volumes); • military uniforms and weapons wuqi 武器 (5 volumes). The preface, attributed to the emperor, reads in part: We, [accordingly], have followed the old traditions of our dynasty and have not dared to change them, fearing that later men would hold us responsible for this, and criticize us regarding the robes and hats; and thus we would offend our ancestors. This we certainly should not do. Moreover, as for the Northern Wei, the Liao, the Jin as well as the Yuan, all of which changed to Chinese robes and hats, they all died out within one generation. Those of Our sons and grandsons who would take Our will as their will shall certainly not be deceived by idle talk. In this way the continuing Mandate of our dynasty will receive the protection of Heaven for ten thousand years. Do not change our traditions or reject them. Beware! Take warning! TRADITIONAL CHINESE CLOTHING INFORMATION Traditional Chinese clothes were an evolution of their long, loose, straight-cut jackets and pants or gowns. • Tang Dynasty Clothing
Tang dynasty clothing Continue Unified and prosperous China was founded in the Tang dynasty (618-907). In Chinese history, the Tang dynasty was a period when politics and the economy were well developed and culture and art flourished. The women's dress and the personal decorations of the Tang dynasty were excellent in Chinese history. The clothing materials were fine, the texture was natural, graceful and elegant, and the decorations were brilliant. Although the shapes of the garments were still a continuation of the Han dynasty (206BC-220AD) and the Sui dynasty (581-618), they were influenced by western cultures and arts. High Tang's national power in particular was strong. Trade and cultural exchanges with Korea, Vietnam, Japan, Persian and other countries gradually became more common, sending each other ambassadors and accepting students from other countries. In this way, a special open and romantic dress style and personal decorations were formed. Due to communication with the Western regions, the impact of the dress culture of other minorities on the Tang Court also reflected a change in ideas and concepts. Chinese women were severely constrained by the old Kungfutse or feudal ethical code throughout the ages. The social status of ancient women was very low: they often served under the nameJileren (music performer), Guanji (official performer), Gongji (palace performer) andJiaji (family performer), and were considered playful and goods that rich people can sell and buy. Some women had rebel spirit in the Tang dynasty, so they climbed or jumped over walls and went into the wild to watch beautiful scenes and/or go sightseeing in the spring riding horses with men.

These are Nwoven or embroidered badges2) used as rank badges on robes belonging to civil officials, advisers and other dignitaries in the courts of the Chinese emperors. They were used from the beginning of the Ming dynasty (1368 – 1644) to the end of the Qing dynasty (1644 – 1911)3). A rigorous examination system was the way to receive a suitable civil or military rank. It was only after passing the examination that one could wear a given badge. The highest of them was the first rank and the lowest – the ninth4). Young boys started training at the age of three. Some men spent their whole lives trying to qualify for a mandarin badge, which was a symbol of great devotion. Mandarin squares are more than the symbol of a certain difficult-to-obtain status5). They depict the Chinese universe – the earth, the sea and the sky, represented by rocks, waves, clouds and animals or birds, used as the symbols of particular ranks6). • An Indian's Attempt to Understand China
www.samarthbharat.com leFkZ Hkkjr An Indian’s Attempt to Understand China Anil Chawla August 2017 www.samarthbharat.com Preface A few weeks back, there was a group discussion about Global Political Scenario. The discussion soon turned to China. A friend, who has travelled to China a couple of times, remarked that the Chinese people have internalized communism and the resulting dictatorial regime. As per him even in private conversations Chinese people do not complain about lack of democratic freedoms; they accept state authority as a fact of life and do not wish to raise a voice against it. He felt that Mao Tse-tung’s espousal of power lives on in the hearts of Chinese people as a belief system. This was new to me. Nevertheless, I told him that probably the mindset of Chinese people accepting dictatorial regimes predates Mao Tse-tung. He agreed that the possibility could not be rejected. The conversation made me realize my ignorance about Chinese history or for that matter about China in general. I decided to learn Chinese history. As I started reading, I was fascinated. Every country in the world has problems. But, one keeps building myths around countries. This has happened more in the case of China because of ignorance about China. Indians tend to build in their minds a larger-than-life image of China. I was no exception. My study helped me build a closer-to-life image of China. As I learnt about China, I wanted to share my knowledge with my friends and countrymen. The original idea was to write a short article on the subject.
