ERIC PLESKOW (1924-2019) In deep sorrow we announce the death of our dear President Eric Pleskow, who passed away on Tuesday, October 1, 2019. His death is a great loss for all of us. Eric had a fulfilled and long life and we appreciated him as a longtime friend and companion of our festival. As president and patron of the Viennale, he has always carried us with his humor and foresight. He will be missed deeply. We express our sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathy to his family. The Team of the Viennale Eric Pleskow: Eric Pleskow was born in Vienna in April 1924. Three days before the outbreak of war, he fled with his family and nothing but ten Reichsmark in his pocket via France to the United States. A coincidence catapulted him into the film business, and the Second World War took the then-21- year-old to Munich as a US soldier. There, General McClure entrusted him with the management of the Bavaria Film Studios. He then worked his way up from European sales manager for United Artists to president of this well-known film studio. From 1973 to 1978 he was the first European after Charlie Chaplin to successfully head United Artists. Following its takeover by Transamerica, he founded Orion Pictures and became one of the most successful men in the American film industry. In 1998, Eric Pleskow became president of the Viennale, a position he filled with verve and great passion. He had been an honorary citizen of the City of Vienna since 2007, and a new cinema hall in the Metro Kinokulturhaus was named after him. Eighty years after being forced to leave Vienna, he had reconciled with his native town. On April 24 2019, Eric Pleskow celebrated his 95th birthday. Hollywood and Germany: Notes on a History of Cultural Exchange1 Paper for “Media in Transition: Globalization and Convergence”, an international conference at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, 10-12 May 2002 by Peter Krämer (School of English and American Studies, University of East Anglia, Norwich NR4 7TJ; e-mail: [email protected]) At the beginning of the new millenium, the annual chart of the top grossing movies in Germany revealed a picture that had become familiar to observers of the German market: Among the top twenty of the year 2000, there was only a single German production (Anatomie at no.15); the other nineteen films came from Hollywood, including, not surprisingly, big budget action films such as Mission: Impossible 2 and Gladiator.2 Even Anatomie was produced and distributed by a German subsidiary of one of the Hollywood majors, Columbia. It seemed, then, that Hollywood had yet again vanquished the German competition, getting German cinemagoers to watch pretty much what their American counterparts were seeing. However, there also were some differences. For example, the no.1 movie was the gross-out teen comedy American Pie, surely a hit in the US, but a long way away from being no.1 over there.3 Three films in the top 10 were animated (Pokemon, Toy Story 2 and Dinosaur), whereas only one of these made it into the US top ten.4 Furthermore, at no.4 American Beauty was much higher placed than in the US (where it did not make it into the top 10 of 1999, even if the substantial revenues in 2000 are counted

Call for Proposals VIENNA IN HOLLYWOOD THE INFLUENCE AND IMPACT OF AUSTRIANS ON THE HOLLYWOOD FILM INDUSTRY, 1920s-2020s Academy Museum of Motion Pictures & University of Southern California Libraries Los Angeles, December 9-11, 2021 Austrians played an extraordinary yet seldom acknowledged role in the US film industry in the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Many, to be sure, have been misrepresented as Germans: their names, the common language, and career paths that often passed through the booming German film industry in the 1920s and 1930s before their emigration to the US have all contributed to this phenomenon. Yet, Austrians, rooted in the vast and multiethnic Habsburg Empire, came to California with distinct identities, cultural backgrounds, and artistic sensibilities. The large and underappreciated presence of Austrian film professionals has shaped and continues to influence American and global filmmaking in often unacknowledged ways. Organized by the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, the USC Libraries, USC’s Max Kade Institute for Austrian, German, and Swiss Studies, and the Austrian Consulate General in Los Angeles, which initiated this project, “Vienna in Hollywood” will explore and highlight the impact of Austrians on the Hollywood film industry from the 1920s through the present. The symposium is part of an event series of the same name dedicated to Austrian and particularly Austrian-Jewish heritage in California, organized by the Austrian Consulate General in Los Angeles. The symposium will take place at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures and at the University of Southern California in December 2021.
