DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY Day 1 Upon arrival in Bangkok, you’ll be shown to your hotel in the bustling Thai capital. The rest of the afternoon is at your leisure. Amble through the local streets and take in a few sights before regrouping at the hotel for dinner with your fellow travelers. Day 2 Enjoy a guided exploration of Bangkok highlighted by visits to The Grand Palace, the official residence of the Kings of Siam since 1782, and the magnificent Wat Pho, the temple that’s home to the city’s largest Reclining Buddha spanning more than 150 feet and covered in gold leaf, the country’s largest collection of Buddha images, and Thailand’s earliest center for public education. Enjoy an immersive taste of Thai culture during a hands-on cooking class led by a local culinary aficionado. Savor the evening’s creations for dinner as the conversation is sure to turn to stories of the day’s adventures—both in the kitchen and throughout the city. Day 3 Board the Eastern & Oriental Express to begin your three-night passage across some of Asia’s most spectacular landscapes. Settle into your private en-suite cabin as the busy streets of Bangkok give way to the tranquil countryside. Enjoy a magnificent dinner created by the Executive Chef and his team in one of the luxurious dining cars. Retire to the Piano Bar and raise a toast with the group as you begin your ride on the rails. Day 4 Morning will find you in Kanchanaburi, where you’ll disembark the train for a choice of exciting ways to discover your new surroundings. The ‘Classic Tour’ includes a cruise to the legendary Bridge on the River Kwai, made famous by the epic 1957 war film, and a visit to the Thai-Burma Railway Museum. Or, choose the ‘Tracks to Unseen Thailand’ tour and bike through rice paddies on your way to a local farm. Finally, the Local Flavors Tour visits a wet market, noodle house, and concludes with a cooking class. After your chosen adventure, return to the train to continue your panoramic journey. Dinner is served on board. Day 5 The day begins with a gentle knock at your door. Surprise, it’s your cabin steward who’s come to serve you breakfast as the train enters Malaysia. Later, you’ll make a stop in Kuala Kangsar, where, once again, choices are to be had. Do you visit a local village, where a friendly villager greets you and gives you an insight into the typical lifestyle of a rural Malaysian? Or, are you feeling a bit more adventurous? If so, join a local naturalist for a rather rigorous hike into the Malaysian hills to uncover absolutely jaw-dropping views. Either way, rejoin the train for cocktails and live piano music before a sensational final dinner onboard. You’ll be shown to your hotel, then enjoy the rest of the afternoon and evening at your leisure. Use the time to do a little independent exploration, perhaps venturing into the colonial heart of this spectacular island city. Or, simply unwind at the hotel and reflect upon the incredible experiences you had on one of the world’s most famous trains. Day 7 Awaken to breakfast at your hotel before being shown to your Azamara® cruise ship to begin your voyage.
