  • Zhang Yimou Interviews Edited by Frances Gateward
ZHANG YIMOU INTERVIEWS EDITED BY FRANCES GATEWARD Discussing Red Sorghum JIAO XIONGPING/1988 Winning Winning Credit for My Grandpa Could you discuss how you chose the novel for Red Sorghum? I didn't know Mo Yan; I first read his novel, Red Sorghum, really liked it, and then gave him a phone call. Mo Yan suggested that we meet once. It was April and I was still filming Old Well, but I rushed to Shandong-I was tanned very dark then and went just wearing tattered clothes. I entered the courtyard early in the morning and shouted at the top of my voice, "Mo Yan! Mo Yan!" A door on the second floor suddenly opened and a head peered out: "Zhang Yimou?" I was dark then, having just come back from living in the countryside; Mo Yan took one look at me and immediately liked me-people have told me that he said Yimou wasn't too bad, that I was just like the work unit leader in his village. I later found out that this is his highest standard for judging people-when he says someone isn't too bad, that someone is just like this village work unit leader. Mo Yan's fiction exudes a supernatural quality "cobblestones are ice-cold, the air reeks of blood, and my grandma's voice reverberates over the sorghum fields." How was I to film this? There was no way I could shoot empty scenes of the sorghum fields, right? I said to Mo Yan, we can't skip any steps, so why don't you and Chen Jianyu first write a literary script.

RUNNING HEAD: Aging in the context of immigration and care labour Aging in the context of immigration and care labour: The experiences of older Filipinos in Canada A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of a Ph.D. in Social Work Ilyan Ferrer School of Social Work McGill University, Montreal JUNE 2018 © Ilyan Ferrer, 2018 Abstract This doctoral dissertation examines how the intersections of immigration, labour, and care impact the late life experiences of older Filipinos in Canada. A critical ethnography was adopted to understand the interplay of lived experiences, identities, and policies (specifically related to retirement, aging, and immigration). Extended observations and in-depth semi-structured interviews with 18 older people, 6 adult children, and 13 community stakeholders identified the structural barriers that impinged on everyday experiences of aging within the Filipino Canadian diaspora living in Montreal. Several themes emerged including (1) the disjuncture between discourses on immigration and migration and the ways in which older racialized newcomers are welcomed into Canadian society, (2) the intersections between immigration and retirement policies and their impact on older Filipina women engaged in domestic work, and (3) the ways in which Filipino older adults provide and receive care in intergenerational and transnational settings in response to the paucity and scarcity of formal resources. The findings of this study offer new knowledge about the impact of immigration and labour policies on the lived experiences of aging and care practices among older members of racialized and immigrant communities in the Global North generally, and within Filipino communities in Canada specifically.

  • China's Youth in Transition
Teaching About Asia Through Youth Culture CONFUCIAN AND COOL China’s Youth in Transition By Robert Moore and James Rizor Kicking Bird could be considered Qingdao University’s first hippie, at least if one were to judge him by his appearance. He had shoulder-length hair and made a point of pub- licly protesting the university’s rules on grooming.1 That was 1994, and even though young Chinese who looked like Kicking Bird could be found in Beijing and Shanghai at that time, they were all but non-existent in provincial cities like Qingdao. In fact, given the conservative grooming of most young Chinese at the time, Kicking Bird’s appearance was striking to say the least. His inspiration came from Hollywood. He had seen the Kevin Costner film Dances with Wolves and, hav- ing been mightily impressed with a Sioux Indian character in that film, had dropped his Chinese name in favor of the character’s and let his hair grow to shoulder length. The university officials were aghast at his be- havior and told him that until he conformed to a more conservative appearance, he wouldn’t be allowed back on campus. Kicking Bird was saved by what might be called the parent-child bond of an enduring Con- fucian mindset—his parents stood up for him and forced the university to back down. We can regard young Kicking Bird as emblematic of the inroads that American popular culture began to make in China once the barriers to outside influences were brought down by the post-Mao reforms initiated in 1978.

Despite the break from Maoism following the fall of the Gang of Four and Deng Xiaoping’s movement towards capitalist modernization, the brutal events of Tiananmen Square caused great concern for a territory facing many changes in the near future. Even before these disturbing events Hong Kong’s imminent return to a motherland with a different dialect and social customs evoked insecurity on the part of a population still remembering the violent events of the Cultural Revolution as well as the Maoist- inspired riots that affected the colony in 1967.

Surname 1 Student’s Name Professor’s Name Course Date Chinese Movies in 1990s A case of “In the Heat of the Sun” and “Farewell My Concubine” In 1990s, different film masterpieces were created within China and other parts of the world. Increased innovation led to high-quality movies and the most famous and iconic work included “The Titanic.” At the same time, realist movies started dominating in the market, and phase was also marked by an increase of independent filmmakers. Under this atmosphere, movies, as a form of art, stepped into a new realm in terms of form and content (Silbergeld 2008). Many movies that were produced in 1990s had great effect as they deepened the thoughts of human beings, humanity, and social development. The paper will analyze Chinese movies that were produced in 1990s and use “In the Heat of the Sun” and “Farewell My Concubine” as my examples. In the 70s of last century, the Culture Revolution began in China and it resulted to low development of Chinese economy, culture, and industry, especially in the aspects of civilization and education. Different educators and artists were killed, and students began to undertake various activities in the countryside. China was civilized country with five thousand years history, but during this movement, it faced culture discontinuity which generated people’s fanatic ideas that drown everything. After damaging history relics, the deteriorating Chinese history and culture as well as the humiliated cultural workers were the main themes during the Culture Revolution that had been lasting for ten years (Silbergeld 2008). His works are often themed on rural life. Contrary to the case in Turkey, researches on rural life in China have advanced on a continuous basis since the 20s of the 20th century in China. This can be explained with the fact that primarily Mo Yan and Jia Pingwa, as prominent novelists in China, never stopped writing on villages, villagers and inner world of peasants that endeavoured to lead the life in the city as they did back in the village. In this brief research study, we try to discuss in what way Mo Yan touched on the pastoral literature in his works. Keywords: Mo Yan, Pastoral Literature, Red Sorghum, China that were born and studied in the village. 1. Introduction Pastoral Literature in China has a very special place in In the long history of agricultural civilization, literature has Chinese literature.

  • Gender and the Family in Contemporary Chinese-Language Film Remakes
Gender and the family in contemporary Chinese-language film remakes Sarah Woodland BBusMan., BA (Hons) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2016 School of Languages and Cultures 1 Abstract This thesis argues that cinematic remakes in the Chinese cultural context are a far more complex phenomenon than adaptive translation between disparate cultures. While early work conducted on French cinema and recent work on Chinese-language remakes by scholars including Li, Chan and Wang focused primarily on issues of intercultural difference, this thesis looks not only at remaking across cultures, but also at intracultural remakes. In doing so, it moves beyond questions of cultural politics, taking full advantage of the unique opportunity provided by remakes to compare and contrast two versions of the same narrative, and investigates more broadly at the many reasons why changes between a source film and remake might occur. Using gender as a lens through which these changes can be observed, this thesis conducts a comparative analysis of two pairs of intercultural and two pairs of intracultural films, each chapter highlighting a different dimension of remakes, and illustrating how changes in gender representations can be reflective not just of differences in attitudes towards gender across cultures, but also of broader concerns relating to culture, genre, auteurism, politics and temporality. The thesis endeavours to investigate the complexities of remaking processes in a Chinese-language cinematic context, with a view to exploring the ways in which remakes might reflect different perspectives on Chinese society more broadly, through their ability to compel the viewer to reflect not only on the past, by virtue of the relationship with a source text, but also on the present, through the way in which the remake reshapes this text to address its audience.

  • Types of Chinese Swords There Are Generally Five Types of Swords in Chinese History, They Are Jian, Zhanmadao, Liuyedao, Wodao and Yanmaodao
Types of Chinese Swords There are generally five types of swords in Chinese history, they are Jian, Zhanmadao, Liuyedao, Wodao and Yanmaodao. The jian is a double-edged straight sword used during the last 2,500 years in China. The first Chinese sources that mention the jian date to the 7th century BC during the Spring and Autumn Period;one of the earliest specimens being the Sword of Goujian. Historical one-handed versions have blades varying from 45 to 80 cm (17.7 to 31.5 inches) in length. The weight of an average sword of 70- centimeter (28-inch) blade-length would be in a range of approximately 700 to 900 grams (1.5 to 2 pounds). There are also larger two-handed versions used for training by many styles of Chinese martial arts. The zhanmadao is a saber with a single long broad blade, and a long handle suitable for two-handed use. Dating to 1072, it was used as an anti-cavalry weapon. This is mentioned in the "Wu Jing Zong Yao Song Military Manual" from 1072. Surviving examples include a sword that might resemble a nagamaki in construction; it had a wrapped handle 37 cm long making it easy to grip with two hands. The blade was 114 centimetres long and very straight with a slight curve in the last half. The liuye dao, or "willow leaf saber", is a type of Dao that was commonly used as a military sidearm for both cavalry and infantry during the Ming and Qing dynasties. This weapon features a moderate curve along the length of the blade.
