Line Art Edition! Spring 2012 Introduction , My My , Blackwing™ ---Rich Burlew presents Line Art Edition! Spring 2012 Welcome to the first issue ofA Monster For Every Season, my Table of Contents attempt to create a comprehensive set of printable miniatures Introduction 2 for your fantasy gaming needs in four installments. As the name implies, each set will be themed to one of the seasons, The Order of the Stick 2 more or less, with the hope that at the end, we’ve covered all Assembly Instructions 3 the major monster (and adventurer) groups. As the Spring installment, this first set was inspired mostly Animals 6 by the green trees outside my window. It features an assortment Centaurs 12 of woodland creatures, from animals to monstrous plants, Dragons 13 plus centaurs, fey, and other forest-dwellers. Alongside them, you’ll find their defenders: druids and rangers, in all the major Druids 15 demihuman races. And then, for this quarter’s humanoids, I The Fey 16 stuck with the green theme: goblins, orcs, and trolls round out the set. Gnolls 17 Most of the pages contain one of each type of monster, but Goblins 18 at the end of the document, there are six pages of “Legion Monsters 20 Sheets;” pages that contain multiple copies of the basic troops for humanoids that are typically encoutnered in groups. That Mounts 21 way, you don’t have to print a page five times because you Orcs 23 want five orc warriors. Next time, it’ll be Summer, which means it’s time for sun, Plants 25 sand, and surf! Or—as they’re known in monster circles—fire- Rangers 27 based, desert-themed, and aquatic creatures. See you then! Trolls 29 ---Rich Burlew. Introduction Roy Greenhilt™ Elan the Bard™ Haley Vaarsuvius™ Durkon Belkar Starshine™ Thundershield™ Bitterleaf™ Mr. Scruffy™ Blackwing™ Spring 2012 Assembly Instructions With these simple instructions, you should be able to assemble the miniatures in this document in no time. What You’ll Need • A pair of scissors. • A penny (or any easily available coin with a diameter around 1.9 cm) • Tape; standard transparent office tape will do, but so will any other tape with a width of about 0.75 inches (1.9 cm). • A sheet of paper printed with the miniatures you want to assemble. Regular copier paper will hold up for one or two sessions, but if you plan on resuing them week after week, try printing on heavier paper stock. Photo paper or cardstock works nicely. Step 1 Once you’ve printed the pages you want, cut out each miniature along the edges of the black rectangle that encloses each one (not on the light grey lines). Instructions Step 2 Cut the black lines that run through the two grey circles at the top and bottom of each miniature. If you’re using thin paper, you may want to skip this step. It may make the finished mini too flimsy. Spring 2012 Assembly Instructions continued Step 3 Fold each miniature along the grey lines, creasing it inward, away from the printed image. There should be three folds, all fac- ing the same direction: one in the middle, and one on each side beneath the feet of the illustrated character. Step 4 Partially unfold the miniature so that the two grey circles on either end overlap. Fit the cut tabs together. You should have a tiny tent-like shape. Obviously, if you skipped Step 2, you don’t need to worry about the cut tabs now! Step 5 Take a penny and put it in the middle of a piece of tape about 2 inches (5 cm) long. Instructions Step 6 Thread the piece of tape (sticky side down) through the end of the tent until the penny rests about where the grey circle is printed on the miniature. About a half inch of tape should stick out of each end of the tent. Spring 2012 Assembly Instructions continued Step 7 Fold the exposed ends of the tape down and around and stick them to the bottom of the tent. Press the tape down all over so it sticks. Step 8 Done! Enjoy your paper miniature! Minis for different sized monsters—like the riding boar pictured here—may use more than one penny, but the principle is the same. But some monsters use smaller dimes (10¢) or larger quarters (25¢) instead. Don’t worry, they’re marked! Mounts Monsters that can serve as mounts have two additional lines near the top of the tent. In order to make the mount ridable, carefully cut the black line on both sides, then fold in on both grey lines. The cross-section of your miniature Instructions should look like a trangle from the front and the letter “M” from the back. Now you’ve created a ledge that should support one regular-sized miniature! What we said about paper weight goes double for mounts! If you’re planning on using a mount for more than one session, print it on heavy paper. Networking Knowledge 8(4) Digital Comics (July 2015) Waiting for the Next Part: How the Temporal Dimensions of Digital Serialisation Have Changed Author-Reader Dynamics GABRIEL E. ROMAGUERA, University of Rhode Island, Kingston Campus ABSTRACT A work of serial fiction is defined as ‘a continuing story over an extended period of time with enforced interruptions’ (Hughes & Lund 1991, 1). It is that “enforced interruption” which makes for a temporal and spatial pause between the author, the reader, and the text. The distribution and publication of instalments for traditional print publishing and print comics works on strict schedules but this is not necessarily the case for digital comics. This paper explores how the serialization of webcomics functions with both defined and indeterminate publication schedules and how this affects the author-reader relationship. It uses textual criticism to better explain the publication aspects of narrative production and adapts these concepts to digital comics and their serialization. The analysis focuses on Rich Burlew and Tarol Hunt, two professional webcomic cartoonists who continue to search for the best publication schedule for their authorial processes. KEYWORDS Serialisation, author-reader relationship, webcomics. 1 Networking Knowledge 8(4) Digital Comics (July 2015) The process of reading requires patience. Engaging with a work of literature takes time as one goes from cover to cover of the text, though one has the power to skip to the end at any moment. In plays, films, television, and other forms of performances, the reader now becomes a viewer, who must wait patiently until the showing has run its time. Only when viewing these texts on a DVD or similar digital document can one exert control over the pace of the storytelling.
