Schule Schloss Salem in Germany! Schule Schloss Salem Handbook for Incoming Exchange Students www.salem-net.de Welcome to Schule Schloss Salem in Germany! As an incoming exchange student, you need to know a lot about the school and your upcoming stay. The following information will be very helpful to you, so please read it carefully. What kind of school is Salem? Schule Schloss Salem is Germany’s most prestigious boarding school for students aged 10 to 19. It was founded in 1920 by Kurt Hahn, who later also founded Gordonstoun School, the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, Outward Bound and the United World Colleges. Salem pursues a holistic approach to education. A range of academic programmes are offered: the German High School programme (Abitur), the Inter- national Baccalaureate (IB), International Classes (year 8, 9 and 10), and Summer Schools for students aged 9 – 16. It compromises four beautiful campuses near Lake Constance: Lower School at Hohenfels Castle, Middle School at Salem Castle and Upper School Salem International College at Spetzgart Castle and Campus Härlen. Salem is a state-accredited, independent, non-profit organization with about 650 students (about 20% internationals). Only very few students are day students. All exchange students will be boarders. Salem’s cosmopolitan atmosphere is enhanced by staff members from several countries. Involvement in extra-curricular activities and the life in the boarding community have the same significance as academic achievement. All students in the upper years must engage in community service and attend a regular programme of sports and outdoor pursuits. Participation in theatre, music and visual arts is strongly en- couraged. Salem’s aim of education is to build personalities, who respect the individual, feel responsible for their environment and have internalized the democratic ideal. For more details please check our website (www.salem-net.de). Do I need a visa and if so what kind? Please check carefully with the German Embassy or a German Consulate General in your home coun- try whether you need a visa. If you need one, please inform the visa office that you will be an exchange student. Your stay should not exceed 90 days. We can, however, during the exchange have your visa extended at our local foreign office for a few days. How is the school year organized? There are three terms (six half-terms): September to December, January to Easter and Easter to July. Please see the school website for the exact dates of terms and holidays: (http://www.salem-net.de/en/ news-calendar/calendar.html). How do I get to Salem? It is easiest to fly to Friedrichshafen Airport with a connection from Frankfurt Airport. Friedrichshafen is located 30 minutes from Salem. As a rule, exchange students are picked up from the airport. Another pos- sibility is to fly into Zürich in Switzerland where a German taxi organized by the school will pick you up. The driver will hold up this sign: This service is provided free of charge if you arrive on the scheduled school arrival dates. Otherwise you must pay for this taxi service. If this is the case, be sure to take a German taxi rather than a Swiss one, as this is much cheaper. You can also fly into Munich or Stuttgart and take the train to Salem, but these options are a bit more complicated. The school will, of course, also organize a taxi to take you back to the airport. Stuttgart GERMANY Munich HOHENFELS SALEM SALEM COLLEGE Friedrichshafen Constance Lake Constance Basel Innsbruck Zurich SWITZERLAND AUSTRIA How is the school organized? There are four campuses: Hohenfels Castle (years 5 – 7), Salem Castle (years 8 – 10), Spetzgart Castle and Härlen Campus (years 11 – 12 and IB I and II). Exchanges usually take place at the middle school in Salem. However, occasionally an exchange is pos- sible at Spetzgart (year 11 or IB I). As a rule students live in dormitories with approximately 20 students each. On the rare occasion a student may be placed in a host family close to the school. Hohenfels Castle (years 5 – 7) Salem Castle (years 8 – 10) Spetzgart Castle (years 11 – 12 and IB I and II) Campus Härlen (years 11 – 12 and IB I and II) What is the climate like? In autumn the climate is relatively mild. The first snowfall generally occurs in November or December. It can snow as late as February or March. Spring is a beautiful season with blooming trees and a lot of sun- shine. Towards the end of the academic year in June and July it can be very hot. Regardless of when you do your exchange, you should always plan for rain. Climate and Weather at Lake Constance Average maximum and lowest temperature of the air (in °Celsius) What kind of clothing should I bring? From breakfast up through lunch, students must dress according to the Salem dress code. This consists of: a white polo shirt (present by the school) or a white dress shirt, a navy blue Salem sweater (provided by the school for your time at Salem) or a black blazer. You are responsible for bringing blue jeans and brown or black single-toned leather shoes. For sports you will need to bring appropriate athletic clothing, tennis shoes, and a bathing suit. During the afternoons and on weekends you can wear your own clothing. Make sure to bring warm clothes for the winter months and rain gear. In each dormitory there is a washer and dryer. You are not required to bring your own bedding and towels; these will be laundered regularly by the school. How much money should I bring? If your exchange lasts up to six weeks, you should bring some pocket money. If you stay longer than six weeks, you should open a parents account at the school. You are required to deposit € 500,- into this account. This is your pocket money for personal expenses, entertainment, excur- sions etc. You can either bring this amount in cash or have it transferred to the Salem bank account. Bank details: Beneficiary: Schule Schloss Salem Bank name in full: Sparkasse Salem-Heiligenberg Branch address: Schlossseeallee 30, 88682 Salem, Germany Account no. 2001907 IBAN: DE39690517250002001907 BIC: SOLADES1SAL If there is a balance left over, this money will be refunded to you. Due to the fact that there are still in- coming invoices your deposit cannot be refunded upon departure. However, we will endeavour to return the remaining amount as soon as possible after final invoices have been resolved. What kind of medical insurance is required? You are responsible for arranging your own medical insurance during your stay at Salem. Please con- tact your insurance company in your home country to see if your medical insurance is valid in Germany. Please provide us with a copy of your insurance card with all important details. What types of communication will I have access to at Salem? You are required to bring your own laptop. There is wireless access throughout the school. Please make sure you bring the appropriate adapter. Laptops are collected every night at 10 pm and locked up until the next morning. Emails are the best form of communication between you and your home country. You can receive phone calls in your dormitory, but you cannot make outgoing calls. For this reason you should bring a mobile phone and purchase a German SIM card. Am I required to bring textbooks or school materials? Textbooks are provided by the school during your stay. You should bring pens/pencils and a calculator. All other school materials can be purchased in the school store. What about the food? Three meals a day are provided. In addition, there is also a second breakfast and an afternoon coffee break. At all three main meals there is always a vegetarian option. If you have any special dietary needs, you must inform the kitchen staff and they can accommodate you. How does a typical week at Salem look like? Weekly Schedule of the Middle School Can I choose which subjects I take? If you are a student at the middle school, you do not generally have a choice of subjects. However, you can only enrol in the foreign languages you have already studied in your home country. If you have not previously studied a foreign language or there is not an appropriate level available for you, you will have some “free” lessons during which time you should study on your own. Your level of ability will be assessed when you arrive in Salem. For IB students there is the regular choice of subjects. You are expected to participate like a regular Salem student and complete tests and homework, with the exception of term papers. What about the rules at Salem? When you arrive at Salem, a member of staff will go over the rules of Salem with you. You are, of course, required to comply with all school rules. Will I receive a report at the end of my exchange? Upon completion of your exchange at Salem, you will receive a report detailing the classes and extra- curricular activities you have participated in. Furthermore, your mentor (house tutor) will write a short report about you. Which forms do I need to fill out before my arrival in Salem? All necessary forms can be found on the school website under “International Exchange”. Whether you come from a Round Square School or not, please fill out the “Round Square Exchange Forms”. • The Story of the Colorado Outward Bound School How the Colorado Outward Bound School Came to Be
The Story of the Colorado Outward Bound School How the Colorado Outward Bound School came to be. Kurt Hahn was born in 1886 in Berlin, Germany to Jewish parents. When he was nineteen, Hahn suffered a severe sunstroke. His recovery required him to stay inside, in dark conditions for a year and avoid sun and heat for the rest of his life. During this time, Hahn developed an idea for a new kind of school that would focus on nurturing personal responsibility, kindness, and justice. Hahn identified six declines that he felt were the fall of modern youth: 1. Decline of Fitness due to modern methods of locomotion/activity 2. Decline of Initiative and Enterprise due to the widespread disease of spectatoritis (excessive indulgence in forms of amusement in which one is a passive spectator rather than an active participant) 3. Decline of Memory and Imagination due to the confused restlessness of modern life 4. Decline of Skill and Care due to the weakened tradition of craftsmanship 5. Decline of Self-Discipline due to the ever-present availability of stimulants and tranquilizers 6. Decline of Compassion due to the unseemly haste with which modern life is conducted or “spiritual death” In response to these declines, Hahn also came up with four solutions to combat these declines. 1. Fitness Training – to compete with one’s self in physical fitness; in doing so, train the discipline and determination of the mind through the body 2. Expeditions – to engage in long, challenging endurance tasks 3. Projects – involving crafts and manual skills 4. Rescue Service – first aid, fire-fighting, etc.

  • March 2016 Dear Parents and Guardians, I Am Always Impressed
The Schools Mark Turner, M.A. Shrewsbury Headmaster SY3 7BA Telephone: 01743 280525 Facsimile: 01743 340048 E-mail: [email protected] March 2016 Dear Parents and Guardians, I am always impressed at the speed of transformation of the school site, once our pupils leave at the end of term. It is a wonder to behold how a busy and hectic campus can become a quiet oasis within a matter of a few hours. This term, as our boys and girls have embarked on journeys to the far flung corners of the globe, we have quickly changed role to become hosts of the National Eton Fives Championships. Teams from across the country, together with international competitors from Switzerland and Malaysia, have been battling it out for national titles. Amongst them is a strong group of Salopians, who we anticipate will make it through to the final stages of the competition. Although the competition is very much ‘live’ as I write, I can congratulate Lizzie Ware and Sophia Breese on winning the U15 girls’ national title. We hope for more good news from the boys. In my end of term assembly, I spoke to the School about the philosophy of Kurt Hahn, one of the leading 20th century educationalists. Earlier in the term, I had the opportunity to spend a few days inspecting Gordonstoun School in Moray. As some of you will know, Gordonstoun was set up in 1934, by Kurt Hahn, on the model of Schule Schloss Salem, which had been founded several decades before, in Germany. As national socialism came to prominence with the rise of the Nazi Party, Kurt Hahn found that the ideals of his beloved school were not shared by the political agenda setters.

  • Your Disability Is Your Opportunity: a Historical Study of Kurt Hahn Focusing on the Early Development of Outdoor Activities
Your Disability is Your Opportunity: A historical study of Kurt Hahn focusing on the early development of outdoor activities. Nicholas James Veevers DISSERTATION PRESENTED IN PART FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF SCIENCE IN OUTDOOR EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH MORAY HOUSE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION (2006) This dissertation is dedicated to the most honourable man I have ever met, my father, Jim Veevers, who died after a long illness during its construction. To him I owe my love of the outdoors. “Because I had the opportunities he did not” ABSTRACT It appears that Kurt Hahn (1886 – 1974) did not produce a specific piece of work which traced, in detail, his development of outdoor activities. Research indicated that, although there have been studies examining his educational theory as a whole, there have been no detailed studies which have specifically investigated Hahn’s development of outdoor activities in an historical context. As Hahn was one of the field’s greatest advocates, a historical study, tracing his development of outdoor activities, was needed to document these events. The aim was to provide the most in-depth historical account possible (up to, and including the 1944 Education Act) and so provide a clearer version of events than existed previously. The research used an inductive approach based on primary data (documents, interviews, correspondence) which was processed using thematic analysis. These findings show that Hahn’s development of outdoor activities is much more complicated than the often quoted fact of him being one of the founders of Outward Bound in 1941. For an accurate understanding of Hahn’s contribution to the outdoor experiential education field this should be recognised.

A SEARCH FOR GENIUS IN WEIMAR GERMANY: THE ABRAHAM LINCOLN STIFTUNG AND AMERICAN PHILANTHROPY Malcolm Richardson Buried in the annual report of the Rockefeller Foundation for 1930 lies a cryptic reference to a German educational bursary with an unlikely name: the Abraham Lincoln Stiftung (ALS). The organization's odd name - combining the German word for foundation with the name of an American president - was intended to symbolize the possibility that a democratic educational system might provide both social mobility and humane leadership. The creation of this German foundation with American money remains one of the best-kept secrets in the history of Rockefeller philanthropy. The Lincoln Stiftung began its short, tumultuous life in 1927 in the afterglow of Locarno and died a violent death seven years later, another

  • IB Salem Language Policy Sept 2019
Schule Schloss Salem International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme Language Policy Valid from September 2019 Seite 2/9 I. Our Policy Schule Schloss Salem is a German secondary boarding school on Lake Constance with a multinational orientation. It guides students from over 40 nations to one of two possible diplomas, the German Abitur or the International Baccalaureate. Schule Schloss Salem draws from the rich Christian-humanist tradition of Europe. In the spirit of its founder, Kurt Hahn, it aims to educate young people into personalities that are able and prepared to take on responsibility for themselves and others. With our Language Policy we want to affirm identity, open students' minds for cultural diversity, and enable conceptual thinking in their subjects and beyond. Our students should relate to their cultural roots and develop their individual cultural identity through maintaining the development of their own language. At the same time, this process should foster the realization and acceptance of ‘otherness’ of any kind – culturally, socially or in terms of values. We want our students to be able to communicate with the others in a differentiated manner in the two school languages – English as language of instruction and, as far as possible, German as the host country language. Ultimately, conducting meaningful and constructive discourse about otherness and finding the common ground would be the highest aim of our language practice. Seite 3/9 II. Our kids now face constant assessment as politicians attempt to measure the success of schools. Children have become tiny cogs in a box-ticking government machine. Education has lost its way. This matters to me a great deal, especially since becoming a father to Ludo, five, and Iona, four. I don’t want my children to feel the same sense of failure I did growing up because they’re not good at passing tests.
