Muito embora tivesse cooperado com o escritor, pagou-lhe uma quantia substancial para dispensá-lo. Quando leu os originais, Lucian ficou estarrecido com a possibilidade de que tantos detalhes íntimos chegassem ao conhecimento do público. Foi abandonada a ideia de publicar o livro, enquanto ele estivesse vivo. Quando eu era repórter no Sunday Times, em fins da década de 1980, outro escritor contou- me que gângsteres da região do East End de Londres o tinham procurado em casa, a pedido de Freud, e o tinham ameaçado com consequências desagradáveis, se ele não parasse de fazer pesquisas para uma biografia. O livro que resultou disso, começado após sua morte, encara a vida e obra de Lucian da perspectiva de alguém que acompanhou sua carreira por 35 anos, mas somente conquistou sua confiança nos dez últimos anos de sua vida. 1. O café da manhã com Lucian começava invariavelmente do mesmo jeito, com o Velho Mestre da arte britânica e David Dawson, seu assistente, mais jovem, percorrendo a pé os poucos metros que separavam a casa do pintor em Kensington Church Street, em Notting Hill, do restaurante Clarke’s. Quando a líder oposicionista birmanesa, Aung San Suu Kyi, esteve no Reino Unido, em junho de 2012, depois de um exílio de 24 anos, foi ali que ela fez seu único almoço em Londres, no dia de seu aniversário de 67 anos. Senhoras inglesas de certa idade, em seus cashmere, apreciam sua atmosfera tranquila. Um cartão sobre a mesa avisa que é proibido o uso de telefones celulares. O duque e a duquesa de Cambridge são seus frequentadores. O restaurante está situado em meio a imobiliárias e antiquários especializados, sendo fácil deixar de percebê-lo; mas, uma vez que se entre por suas portas de madeira e vidro, fica evidente sua superioridade diante de quase todos os outros restaurantes na área. Lucian tinha começado a frequentar o minúsculo café na entrada do Clarke’s em 1989 com Leigh Bowery, o exuberante artista performático australiano, cujas bochechas com piercing e peruca loura ou cabeça raspada faziam com que Lucian, ao seu lado, parecesse uma figura anônima. Lucian e David iam ao Clarke’s a pé para tomar café na maioria dos dias, e por quase dez anos, com intervalos, geralmente aos sábados, eu pertenci ao pequeno elenco de amigos convidados, muito embora fôssemos mantidos separados. Lucian distribuía seu tempo entre amantes antigas e recentes, marchands, seus filhos, moldureiros e amigos.     Absorbing the Worlds of Others: Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s Adapted Screenplays By Laura Fryer Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of a PhD degree at De Montfort University, Leicester. Funded by Midlands 3 Cities and the Arts and Humanities Research Council. June 2020 i Abstract Despite being a prolific and well-decorated adapter and screenwriter, the screenplays of Ruth Prawer Jhabvala are largely overlooked in adaptation studies. This is likely, in part, because her life and career are characterised by the paradox of being an outsider on the inside: whether that be as a European writing in and about India, as a novelist in film or as a woman in industry. The aims of this thesis are threefold: to explore the reasons behind her neglect in criticism, to uncover her contributions to the film adaptations she worked on and to draw together the fields of screenwriting and adaptation studies. Surveying both existing academic studies in film history, screenwriting and adaptation in Chapter 1 -- as well as publicity materials in Chapter 2 -- reveals that screenwriting in general is on the periphery of considerations of film authorship. In Chapter 2, I employ Sandra Gilbert’s and Susan Gubar’s notions of ‘the madwoman in the attic’ and ‘the angel in the house’ to portrayals of screenwriters, arguing that Jhabvala purposely cultivates an impression of herself as the latter -- a submissive screenwriter, of no threat to patriarchal or directorial power -- to protect herself from any negative attention as the former. However, the archival materials examined in Chapter 3 which include screenplay drafts, reveal her to have made significant contributions to problem-solving, characterisation and tone.

As, the daughter of famed portrait artist Lucian Freud and great-granddaughter of ground-breaking psychologist Sigmund Freud, McAdam Freud is highly influenced by her family history. Her sculpture practice explores sexuality and unconscious influence, among other theories of her great-grandfather. With her predilection for the pairing of opposites the artist’s latest works look to the omnipresent but often ignored mother figure. Her, already internationally acclaimed* yet still to be exhibited, new works contemplate ‘the mother as mould’. This is in direct contrast to her previous exploration of ‘the father as muse’, explored in Family Matters, her first retrospective at the gallery and in her solo exhibition Lucian Freud My Father at the Freud Museum in 2012. Mother Mould, further explores the theme of family, through a dozen of large-scale sculptures composed of found objects enmeshed in wire. Evoking the idea of creation, these installations pair the found and the made, the incidental and the intended. The resulting works uncannily suggest the mother as the source, containing, shaping and replicating forms. “Naturally we are ‘moulded’ by our mothers experience from birth. However this symbiotic relationship precedes birth as, in reality, ‘we’ go back to the egg. After all, it was at our conception that we had our first ‘feed’.

  • In 1938, Aged Fifteen, Freud Enrolled at the Central School of Arts And
    In 1938, aged fifteen, Freud enrolled at the Central School of Arts and Crafts—where he engaged principally with drawing—but stayed only for a term, not taking to the school’s atmosphere. It was in the early summer of 1939, when sixteen, that he attended the East Anglian School of Drawing and Painting in Dedham, Essex, and found that he could paint. Under the guidance of the school’s principal Cedric Morris, Freud produced works including portraits, views from a window, plants and personally significant still lives. Formative influences cited by Freud include Aubrey Beardsley’s Lysistrata illustrations. After supposedly burning down the East Anglian School as a result of discarding a lit cigarette, in 1941 Freud served on the armed merchant cruiser SS Baltrover—a North Atlantic convoy travelling to Nova Scotia which was attacked from both the air and by a submarine. Initially returning to England to re-attend the East Anglian School now at Benton End, Hadleigh, Suffolk, Freud subsequently moved to Paddington in London and mounted his first one-man show at the gallery Alex Reid & Lefevre in 1944. During his years in Paddington many of his Irish working- class neighbours sat for him, in particular the brothers Charlie and Billy. Freud began to travel to Paris, and spent two months there in 1946, followed by another five months on the Greek island of Poros. He stayed there again in 1947 with Kitty Garman, the daughter of Kathlene Garman and the sculptor Jacob Epstein. Freud married Kitty the following year. During 1948 he also exhibited at the London Gallery.

The subtle shading evokes a host of textures exuding softness, warmth, and the absence of immediate tension. The robe has slipped off the sitter's shoulder, exposing her right breast. Coupled with the absent Lucian Freud Portraits of the woman and the dog, the muted colors and faint contours give this composition an overall flatness.
