Note: The following sources are available online at the Walt Whitman Archive: LG, LG55, LG56, LG60, and wwc. { ix } INTRODUCTION Joanna LevIn & edward whITLey At some point in 1861 or 1862, Walt Whitman pulled out the notebook that he had been using to jot down ideas and keep track of the names of new friends (and lovers) and wrote the beginnings of a poem that he titled “The Two Vaults.” He never published the poem, and, given that he describes only one of the vaults promised in the title, we can assume that he never finished it either. As it stands, this poem fragment gives us a glimpse into Whitman’s brief tenure with the self- styled bohemians of antebellum New York who gathered at Charles Pfaff’s beer cellar to drink and talk. The vault at Pfaffs where the drinkers and laughers meet to eat and drink and carouse While on the walk immediately overhead, pass the myriad feet of Broadway As the dead in their graves, are underfoot hidden And the living pass over them, recking not of them, Laugh on laughters! [sic] Drink on drinkers! Bandy the jests! Toss the theme from one to another! Beam up—Brighten up, bright eyes of beautiful young men! Eat what you, haveing ordered, are pleased to see placed before you— after the work of the day, now, with appetite eat, Drink wine—drink beer—raise your voice. Behold! your friend, as he arrives—Welcome him, when, from the upper step, he looks down upon you with a cheerful look Overhead rolls Broadway—the myriad rushing The lamps are lit—the shops blaze in—the fabrics and jewelry are seen through the plate glass windows The strong lights from above pour down upon them and are shed outside The thick crowds, well- dressed—the continual crowds as if they would never end { xi } The curious appearance of the faces—the glimpses first caught of the eyes and expressions, as they flit along. (You phantoms! oft I pause, yearning, to arrest some one of you! Oft I doubt your reality—whether you are real—I suspect all is but a pageant.) The lights beam in the first vault—but the other is entirely dark In the first1 Whitman joined the “drinkers and laughers” at Pfaff’s sometime around 1858. “I used to go to Pfaff’s nearly every night,” he wrote later in life, remi- niscing that, as it grew dark, “Pfaff would politely invite everybody who happened to be sitting in the cave he had under the sidewalk to some other part of the restaurant” so that the group of writers, artists, and intellec- tuals who came to the underground bar at 647 Broadway could continue with their efforts to transport a European- style bohemianism from Paris’s Latin Quarter to downtown Manhattan. Whitman continued, “There was a long table extending the length of this cave; and as soon as the Bohemi- ans put in an appearance .

    HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Maxwell Lewis Williams August 2020 © 2020 Maxwell Lewis Williams HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA Maxwell Lewis Williams Cornell University 2020 This dissertation theorizes a contemporary hip-hop genre that I call “neo-bohemian,” typified by rapper Kendrick Lamar and his collective, Black Hippy. I argue that, by reclaiming the origins of hipness as a set of hybridizing Black cultural responses to the experience of modernity, neo- bohemian rappers imagine and live out liberating ways of being beyond the West’s objectification and dehumanization of Blackness. In turn, I situate neo-bohemian hip-hop within a history of Black musical expression in the United States, Senegal, Mali, and South Africa to locate an “aesthetics of existence” in the African diaspora. By centering this aesthetics as a unifying component of these musical practices, I challenge top-down models of essential diasporic interconnection. Instead, I present diaspora as emerging primarily through comparable responses to experiences of paradigmatic racial violence, through which to imagine radical alternatives to our anti-Black global society. Overall, by rethinking the heuristic value of hipness as a musical and lived Black aesthetic, the project develops an innovative method for connecting the aesthetic and the social in music studies and Black studies, while offering original historical and musicological insights into Black metaphysics and studies of the African diaspora.

CHAPTER 8 Bohemians Greenwich Village and The Masses Joanna Levin Ever since Rodolphe, Henri Murger's prototypical struggling writer, stood before the grave of Mimi, his lost love and partner in the romance of bohemia, crying, "Oh my youth, it is you that is being buried," la vie boheme has represented a fabled transitional period between youth and mature adulthood in many an individual life, memoir, and Bildungsroman (Seigel 45). Similarly, ever since its inception in the wake of the 1830 Rev­ olution in France, bohemianism - as a larger subcultural movement has flourished during periods of historical transition. It was in the tumultuous lead-up to the Civil War that la vie boheme first took root in the United States (in a basement beer hall beneath the sidewalks of Broadway and Bleecker and on the pages of the New York Saturday Press), but it was dur­ ing the 1910s, the decade known for ushering in a host of radical and mod­ ernist movements, that bohemia assumed its most famous American form in New York City's Greenwich Village.

    The Art of Writing a Life: Heimatsuche and Bohemianism in the Poetry of Lasker-Schüler by Marie Emily Kulms A thesis submitted to the Department of German In conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada (December, 2010) Copyright © Marie Emily Kulms, 2010 Abstract This study explores how the poetry of Else Lasker-Schüler (1869-1945) creates a personal space—a Heimat—through the poetic process. Through close readings of a selection of the poet’s works, I demonstrate the paradoxical relationship between physical structures and emotional or psychic freedom. I show how this association between form and fluidity reflects the poetic genre itself, while also drawing parallels to Lasker-Schüler’s biography and her relationships with the Berliner Bohème. Lasker-Schüler’s work has been viewed through many different lenses: Expressionism, Judaism, and feminism. Such interpretations can be problematic, as they impose limitations on the poet’s work and are thereby contradictory to the fluid qualities conveyed in her poems. Through close analysis of the formal and aesthetic aspects of Lasker-Schüler’s poetry, I illuminate this often neglected, but most important aspect of the fluctuating, creative space. Lasker-Schüler’s life circumstances forced her to live an unsettled life, but poetry seems to have functioned as a means of accessing the internal Heimat or Seelenlandschaft. The lyrical “I” of Lasker-Schüler’s poetry wanders throughout the poet’s collective works, her voice undergoing metamorphoses, leaving the reader to question this elusive poetic identity. The bohemians, who offered Lasker-Schüler an inspiring creative community, mirror this internal poetic world externally, as they embraced art and performance to create their chameleon-like identities.

    Classic Poetry Series James Russell Lowell - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive James Russell Lowell(22 February 1819 – 12 August 1891) James Russell Lowell was an American Romantic poet, critic, editor, and diplomat. He is associated with the Fireside Poets, a group of New England writers who were among the first American poets who rivaled the popularity of British poets. These poets usually used conventional forms and meters in their poetry, making them suitable for families entertaining at their fireside. Lowell graduated from Harvard College in 1838, despite his reputation as a troublemaker, and went on to earn a law degree from Harvard Law School. He published his first collection of poetry in 1841 and married Maria White in 1844. He and his wife had several children, though only one survived past childhood. The couple soon became involved in the movement to abolish slavery, with Lowell using poetry to express his anti-slavery views and taking a job in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as the editor of an abolitionist newspaper. After moving back to Cambridge, Lowell was one of the founders of a journal called The Pioneer, which lasted only three issues. He gained notoriety in 1848 with the publication of A Fable for Critics, a book-length poem satirizing contemporary critics and poets.
