IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM FATHER DEMETRIOS GARDIKES AND THE SAFETY COMMITTEE

September 12, 2021

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We continue to follow the guidelines as received from the Pittsburgh Metropolis. Currently, our requirement to wear masks and observe physical distancing within our worship space, church events and meetings remains lifted for those who have been vaccinated. In addition, the Metropolis is instructing us to follow the civil guidelines of our county and city. As we understand, the city of Columbus is moving to enforce an indoor mask order in public places.

We will not require masks to attend the cathedral services. As per metropolis instruction, we will not be asking people to demonstrate their vaccinated status for entry into the Church and we must operate on the honor system, trusting that people will be responsible when entering our parishes and participating in parish events.” However, the Annunciation Cathedral strongly encourages ALL parishioners to wear masks when in the Cathedral complex for your protection and for the protection of other parishioners. Even those who have been vaccinated and who exhibit no symptoms can spread Covid-19 to other persons. We will remain within the Metropolis guidelines to offer space for those who still wish to distance their self and wear masks. We will expand this space. The back five pews of the north pews in the nave will be designated for anyone who wishes to continue to observe physical distancing and wear masks. These five pews will remain sectioned off for this purpose. The remainder of the north pews and the south pews in the nave will be open seating and masks are optional. Please do not sit in the designated space without a mask.

We continue to monitor the Pandemic conditions and the restrictions as guided by the metropolis and civil authorities, “if any pandemic restrictions remain in your county or state regarding non-worship activities those restrictions must be observed.” The office remains open thru as normal, except during holidays. You are welcome to come in throughout the week and light candles or we are happy to do it for you.

In the meantime, we pray for all of you, and the world, especially those who are sick and directly working to fight off this virus on our behalf. The Lord bless and keep all of us safe!

With Love in Christ,

+Fr Demetrios Gardikes and the Annunciation Safety Committee

WELCOME TO THE ANNUNCIATION GREEK ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL! We are so happy that you are worshipping with us today! If you are visiting, please fill out a "Visitor Information Card," located in the Narthex, and give it to a Parish Council member at the candle stand in the Narthex. If you are an Orthodox Christian new to the Columbus area, or if you would like to know more about becoming an Orthodox Christian, please introduce yourself to one of the priests who would be most happy to meet with you and discuss membership in our Cathedral. It is our desire that you make the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral your spiritual home! May God richly bless you and your family! FOR THE RECEPTION OF HOLY We welcome all Christians not fully united with us. It is a consequence of the sad divisions of that we cannot extend to all a general invitation to receive Holy Communion. Orthodox Christians believe that the is an action of the celebrating community signifying a oneness in faith, life, and worship. Reception of the Eucharist by Christians not fully united with us would imply a oneness which does not yet exist and for which we must all pray.

DIVINE LITURGY BOOK

MISSION STATEMENT OF OUR PARISH Our community, united in our Orthodox Christian faith, aspires to live a Christ-centered life as set forth by our Holy Tradition. Strengthened by our Hellenic culture and the actions and sacrifices of our Greek-American founders and predecessors, we live as one, multicultural parish family sharing Christ’s love in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

CORE VALUES We renew our faith continually through active participation in worship, , discipleship and prayer.

We experience a sense of acceptance, joy, peace, belonging and “koinonia” to all in our community and to all those that walk through our doors as one family.

We follow ’ command to “Go Forth” by sharing Christ’s love beyond our cathedral walls to those in physical and spiritual need.

We are responsible to inspire and teach future generations on the traditions and values of living our Orthodox faith.

We commit, in thanksgiving, our , talent and treasure to support our cathedral by safeguarding the ministerial, physical and financial needs to ensure the health of His Church and to further the Gospel message now and in the future.

We create an environment where we respect our collective cultural identities while celebrating our Hellenic traditions, history, language, and heritage.

THE PROCLAMATION OF THE HOLY GOSPEL

The Gospel According to John 19:25-27; 21:24-25 At that time, standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, "Woman, behold, your son!" Then he said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. This is the disciple who is bearing witness to these things, and who has written these things; and we know that his testimony is true. But there are also many other things which Jesus did; were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.

OUTREACH COMMITTEE We are blessed to have the opportunity to provide dessert for 120 members of the Kindway family at their reunion event October 20, 2021. Kindway is one of the organizations the Outreach Committee supported last year for its work in assisting newly released inmates to help them reintegrate into society. They have extraordinary success in helping these individuals obtain housing and jobs and stay out of prison; their recidivism rate is 2% compared to 30+% statewide. Your help is needed; if you are interested in being part of this prison outreach team, please contact Presvytera Evangeline Baron at [email protected]. **EXISTING YOUTH WORKERS** It’s Time to Update your Youth Protection Training!

As we prepare to reopen the Cathedral, in the near future, we want to be ready and have things in place for our youth. If you have undergone the Armatus training last year and are registered with the Annunciation as a youth worker, you may have received an email to update your training. To access your account, please go to http://praesidiuminc.com/login and complete the one-hour training session.

**HOW TO BECOME A YOUTH WORKER** Below you will find a link to a registration form. Please fill it out personally and forward it to those in your organization. For example, the Greek School Director is responsible for making sure that the teachers within that organization receive this information and complete the form.

Within a few days to a week of completion, Armatus will reply directly to you to confirm that they received it and will email you a username and password. This will grant you access to a portal for the youth worker trainings. In the portal, the youth workers must complete the two trainings. They take between 1 to 2 hours each.

Also, upon completion of the registration, Armatus will email you (as a youth worker) a link to fill out information for background check information. You must then fill this out asap because the link expires after a week or so. It may take anywhere from a day to a few for the results.

Thank you for your compliance in this Youth Worker Application. Again, please look for two emails from Praesidium Inc., the administrator of the Armatus online training classes and background checks required by the Archdiocese. One will be with your credentials for the training (login & password) and the other will be for you to complete the screening process. tinyurl.com/AnnCbus-YouthWorker

NEWLY DEVELOPED STS. CYRIL AND METHODIUS RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND MISSIONS FUND

The purpose of the fund:

The Religious Ed part of it - Oftentimes, our young college people would love to participate in a Metropolis or Archdiocesan young adult programs, but do not have the resources at their age. As a church, we want to encourage our young people to participate in these opportunities by letting them know that there might be help to supplement (on a need case basis). Once we build up the fund, we will be in a position to issue a check directly to the Archdiocese program towards their balance.

The Missions part of it has a dual purpose - A. Offer the ability to supplement local mission project(s) the Annunciation is organizing or involved with. B. To help supplement an Annunciation member who will participate in a mission organized under one of the Orthodox Archdiocese umbrellas.

If you are interested in contributing towards this newly developed Annunciation Fund, please write a check to the Greek Orthodox Cathedral and in the memo section write “Sts. Cyril and Methodius Religious Ed and Missions Fund or contact Fr. Demetrios Gardikes. We cannot help with these opportunities until we build the monetary resources to do so. Please consider giving today.

OUR MISSION Rise Against Hunger is driven by the vision of a world without hunger. Our mission is to end hunger in our lifetime by providing food and life-changing aid to the world’s most vulnerable and creating a global commitment to mobilize the necessary resources.

We need 100 volunteers on September 27, 2021 to meet in the Gym at 6:00 p.m. to prepare 10,000 meals. Please contact Helen Rankin at 614-530-4771 or email her at [email protected] to register for this family event.
