When Dr. Fairchild Visited Miss Sessions: San Diego 19191

FAIRCHILD VISITED MISS SESSIONS: SAN DIEGO 19191 ■ By Nancy Carol Carter n 1939, Kate Sessions received the prestigious Frank N. Meyer Medal for distinguished services in plant introduction by the American Genetics Association. IShe joined the ranks of previously recognized male botanists, including Louis Charles Trabut, a French doctor teaching at the University of Algiers; Henry Nicholas Ridley, an Englishman who learned to tap the rubber tree for latex; Palemon Howard Dorsett, who spent the 1920s identifying plants in China and Japan; and wealthy amateur plant explorers Barbour Lathrop and Allison V. Armour. It was thirty years before another woman received the same honor.2 Sessions was nominated for the award by David Fairchild, plant explorer, botanist and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) official. A newly-explored archive of letters, photographs and manuscripts at the Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden expands our knowledge of their relationship. Their seventeen-year-long correspon- dence suggests that he was the most enduring and influential of her professional contacts.3 This article reveals both the professional and the personal nature of their relationship, giving us a more nuanced understanding of Kate Sessions herself. By the end of the nineteenth century, botany had moved almost entirely from its Enlightenment origins as a proper and recommended activity for women and children to a professionalized and almost exclusively male pursuit within the science culture. Some exceptional women made a place for themselves in the field at this early date, but had to overcome barriers. -

Aubrey Davidson’s laudatory address to an excited crowd attending the opening of the Panama-California Exposition on January 1, 1915, gave no inkling that the Spanish Colonial architectural legacy that is so familiar to San Diegans today was ever in doubt. The buildings of this exposition have not been thrown up with the careless unconcern that characterizes a transient pleasure resort. They are part of the surroundings, with the aspect of permanence and far-seeing design...Here is pictured this happy combination of splendid temples, the story of the friars, the thrilling tale of the pioneers, the orderly conquest of commerce, coupled with the hopes of an El Dorado where life 1 can expand in this fragrant land of opportunity. As early as 1909, Davidson, then president of the Chamber of Commerce, had suggested that San Diego hold an exposition in 1915 to celebrate the opening of the Panama Canal. When City Park was selected as the site in 1910, it seemed appropriate to rename the park for Spanish explorer Vasco Nuñez de Balboa, who had discovered the Pacific Ocean and claimed the Iris H. W. Aubrey Davidson, founder of the Southern Trust and Commerce Bank and Commerce Bank and president of the San Diego Chamber of Commerce, said San Diego should stage an exposition in 1915 to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal. He told his fellow Chamber of Commerce members that San Diego would be the first American port of call north of the Panama Canal on the Pacific Coast. An exposition would call attention to the city and bolster an economy still shaky from the Wall Street panic of 1907. The Chamber of Commerce authorized Davidson to appoint a committee to look into his idea.1 Because the idea began with him, Davidson is called "the father of the exposition."2 On September 3, 1909, a special Chamber of Commerce committee formed the Panama- California Exposition Company and sent articles of incorporation to the Secretary of State in Sacramento.3 In 1910 San Diego had a population of 39,578, San Diego County 61,665, Los Angeles 319,198 and San Francisco 416,912. Scharf Balboa Park, 1909-1911 The Rise and Fall of the Olmsted Plan By Gregory Montes Copley Award, San Diego History Center 1981 Institute of History Images from this article BETWEEN 1868, the founding year of San Diego's City Park, now Balboa Park, and 1909, public open space protagonists and antagonists fought frequently over how to use the 1,400 acre tract. But as of 1909 it still was not clear which force would prevail in the long run. Due to San Diego's small population (39,000) and economy, caused mainly by its remote location in the southwesternmost United States, City Park represented somewhat of a draw by 1909. On the one hand, the relatively few, albeit vigorous, well-placed park supporters had managed to achieve since 1868 only about 100 acres of spotty, although pleasing landscaping, mainly in the southwest, northwest and southeast corners of City Park and construction of several long, winding boulevards throughout the tract.1 On the other hand, the park poachers had succeeded in permanently gaining only five acres for a non-park use, San Diego (or Russ) High School at the south side of City Park. Until 1909, public park protectors and town developers had not reached a consensus on how to proceed with City Park. Then came forward an idea which seemed to have something for both sides, more or less. The transformation of that proposal to reality brought divergent San Diegans together on some points and asunder on others. -

The intact home and grounds reflect the genteel taste of the Marston Family as a whole who in the early 20th century elevated landscape settings, by example, toward city beautification in the dusty, semi-arid, coastal desert of San Diego. The Period of Significance encompasses the full occupancy of the Marston Family from 1905-1987, which reflects the completion of the house construction in 1905 to the death of daughter Mary Marston in 1987. George White Marston (1850-1946) and daughter Mary Marston (1879-1987) are the two notable family members most associated with the design and implementation of the Marston House Gardens, et al. The George W. Marston House (George White and Anna Gunn Marston House) was historically designated by the City of San Diego on 4 December 1970, Historic Site #40. -

The Trees of Balboa Park By Nancy Carol Carter Landscape architect Samuel H. Parsons, Jr. noted with enthusiasm the growth of trees and shrubs in City Park when he returned to San Diego in 1910. Five years had elapsed since his New York firm had submitted a comprehensive master plan for the layout of the 1,400 acres set aside as a park in 1868, but mostly left in a natural state for the next few decades. Parsons had returned to San Diego because the city had decided to host an international exposition in 1915. He was hired this time to assess progress on City Park’s master plan and to suggest improvements in all of San Diego’s parks. He thought San Diego had made good progress in engi- neering roads and otherwise fulfilling the landscape plan of City Park.1 His formal report to the park commissioners, submitted June 28, 1910, includes a description of trees and other plantings in the park. By the time Parsons wrote this report, City Park had been in existence for forty-two years and was estimated to contain about 20,000 healthy trees and shrubs. The park commission kept careful records of 2,357 shrubs and vines planted in 1909, but earlier landscape records are sketchy.2 In 1902, Parsons had suggested that the mesas be left open to preserve the stunning views stretching from the mountains to the ocean. “Overplanting is a common mistake everywhere,” he said, “A park is too often perverted to a sort of botanical garden, where a heterogeneous lot of plants are gathered together and massed in a haphazard fashion.”3 He was trying to help San Diegans understand the difference between a park and botanical garden and perhaps obliquely com- menting on the hodgepodge of homegrown efforts to develop the park before 1910. -
