Available at: https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/jeal/vol2020/iss170/5 This Report is brought to you for free and open access by the Journals at BYU ScholarsArchive. It has been accepted for inclusion in Journal of East Asian Libraries by an authorized editor of BYU ScholarsArchive. For more information, please contact [email protected], [email protected]. Lists of Selected Full-text Databases by Subscription in East Asian Studies Compiled and edited by Vickie Fu Doll, University of Kansas Wen-ling Liu, Indiana University Dongyun Ni, University of Hawaii at Manoa Fabiano Rocha, University of Toronto This supplement is comprised of three database lists: 1. 172 E-Book Database modules by Subscription, 2. 125 E-Journal Database modules by Subscription, and 3. 25 Multi-Media Audio/Visual Database modules by Subscription Each list covers Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Non-CJK databases. In total, 322 databases modules are included in these three lists as of November 2019. Each list consists of the following columns: (1) English Title, (2) CJK Title, (3) Romanized Title, (4) Subtitle/Module, (5) Languages, (6) Sub-series, (7) Publisher, (8) Description/source, (9) Notes, (10) Title counts, and/or (11) Volume counts, and (12) Information Source. For the convenience of readers in North America, the commonly accepted title of the database usually takes precedence over the database’s original name. For example, CHANT is a known abbreviation for Chinese Ancient Texts Database 漢達文庫; therefore, the abbreviated name is listed first, with the English and Chinese titles next to it. The same format is applied to the Vendor and Publisher columns. These lists are a collaborative work by CEAL members who have contributed to the compilation, editing, and review of the content. Among them, Fabiano Rocha (University of Toronto and Chair of the Committee on Japanese Materials) inputted and reviewed all of the Japanese databases with help from members of the CJM. Susan Xue (UC Berkeley and the Chair of the UC System CJK E-Resources Task Force) contributed significantly to the review and editing of the University of California system’s Chinese databases. Our thanks also goes to several CEAL Statistics Coordinators who input their local produced databases in East Asian studies. It is worth noting that the descriptions of databases provided by some of the large East Asian electronic collections have been invaluable contributions, namely Princeton, Harvard, Columbia, Stanford, and University of Michigan. The attached lists are in no way a complete inventory. We hope the databases’ information may also serve e-resource collection development needs of the East Asian studies librarians. We welcome feedback for improvements. 27 Supplement 1 2019 Selected E‐Books Databases by Subscription in East Asian Studies Volume Language Sub Series Publisher Description Notes Title Count Data Source Title CJK title Romanized Title Subtitle Count 国医典藏中医古籍库 Guo yi dian cang zhong yi gu ji ku Chi Series I Institute of Contains 500 medical titles (2,500 volumes) published from the pre‐Qin dynasty Information on (roughly 3rd century B.C.) to the Republican period.(early 20th century). Christian Women and the Making of a Modern Chinese Family: an Exploration of Nü duo 女鐸, 1912–1951 Zhou Yun A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The Australian National University February 2019 © Copyright by Zhou Yun 2019 All Rights Reserved Except where otherwise acknowledged, this thesis is my own original work. Acknowledgements I would like to express my deep gratitude to my supervisor Dr. Benjamin Penny for his valuable suggestions and constant patience throughout my five years at The Australian National University (ANU). His invitation to study for a Doctorate at Australian Centre on China in the World (CIW) not only made this project possible but also kindled my academic pursuit of the history of Christianity. Coming from a research background of contemporary Christian movements among diaspora Chinese, I realise that an appreciation of the present cannot be fully achieved without a thorough study of the past. I was very grateful to be given the opportunity to research the Republican era and in particular the development of Christianity among Chinese women. I wish to thank my two co-advisers—Dr. Wei Shuge and Dr. Zhu Yujie—for their time and guidance. Shuge’s advice has been especially helpful in the development of my thesis. Her honest critiques and insightful suggestions demonstrated how to conduct conscientious scholarship. I would also like to extend my thanks to friends and colleagues who helped me with my research in various ways. Special thanks to Dr. Caroline Stevenson for her great proof reading skills and Dr. Paul Farrelly for his time in checking the revised parts of my thesis.

  • Violence and Predation, Mainly in the Form of Piracy, Were Two Of
violence and predation robert j. antony Violence and Predation on the Sino-Vietnamese Maritime Frontier, 1450–1850 iolence and predation, mainly in the form of piracy, were two of V the most persistent and pervasive features of the Sino-Vietnamese maritime frontier between the mid-fifteenth and mid-nineteenth cen- turies.1 In the Gulf of Tonkin, which is the focus of this article, piracy was, in fact, an intrinsic feature of this sea frontier and a dynamic and significant force in the region’s economic, social, and cultural devel- opment. My approach, what scholars call history from the bottom up, places pirates, not the state, at center stage, recognizing their impor- tance and agency as historical actors. My research is based on various types of written history, including Qing archives, the Veritable Records of Vietnam and China, local Chinese gazetteers, and travel accounts; I also bring in my own fieldwork in the gulf region conducted over the past six years. The article is divided into three sections: first, I discuss the geopolitical characteristics of this maritime frontier as a background to our understanding of piracy in the region; second, I consider the socio-cultural aspects of the gulf region, especially the underclass who engaged in clandestine activities as a part of their daily lives; and third, I analyze five specific episodes of piracy in the Gulf of Tonkin. The Gulf of Tonkin (often referred to here simply as the gulf), which is tucked away in the northwestern corner of the South China Sea, borders on Vietnam in the west and China in the north and east.

  • The Road to Literary Culture: Revisiting the Jurchen Language Examination System*
T’OUNG PAO 130 T’oung PaoXin 101-1-3 Wen (2015) 130-167 www.brill.com/tpao The Road to Literary Culture: Revisiting the Jurchen Language Examination System* Xin Wen (Harvard University) Abstract This essay contextualizes the unique institution of the Jurchen language examination system in the creation of a new literary culture in the Jin dynasty (1115–1234). Unlike the civil examinations in Chinese, which rested on a well-established classical canon, the Jurchen language examinations developed in close connection with the establishment of a Jurchen school system and the formation of a literary canon in the Jurchen language and scripts. In addition to being an official selection mechanism, the Jurchen examinations were more importantly part of a literary endeavor toward a cultural ideal. Through complementing transmitted Chinese sources with epigraphic sources in Jurchen, this essay questions the conventional view of this institution as a “Jurchenization” measure, and proposes that what the Jurchen emperors and officials envisioned was a road leading not to Jurchenization, but to a distinctively hybrid literary culture.
