Express Khuzaima Qutbuddin, claimant to the position of the spiritual head of Dawoodi Bohras, was buried at his residence Darus Sakina in Thane on Sunday afternoon, in a private affair involving a few members from the Dawoodi Bohra community. Qutbuddin, who passed away on March 31 in California, was 76 and has been succeeded by his son Taher Fakhruddin. Owing to the feud in the family, Qutbuddin’s body was placed in a hired chopper and flown over — the mausoleum in Bhendi Bazaar where his father Taher Saifuddin and former Dai al­Mutlaq Mohammad Burhanuddin have been buried — to encircle it seven times. In a statement, Qutbuddin’s family admitted that he “had been prevented in the last two years from performing ziyarat at Raudat Tahera since the sad passing away of His Holiness the Late Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin” According to his family, it was Qutbuddin’s wish to perform ziyarats (pay respect to the grave) of his father and brother. With fear of backlash or stone­pelting from the members of the community, his family decided to visit the mausoleum in a helicopter and pay respects from directly above the grave. “…and it was fulfilled as he always wanted it, with peace and dignity,” the family stated. Qutbuddin was in a legal tussle with the former Dai’s son Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin over the succession to the post of Syedna and guardianship of all Bohra properties attached with the community.

Jealousy and intrigue, attacks and assassination attempts ­­ the closed and highly exclusive world of the powerful ruling priestly family of the Dawoodi Bohras lay exposed on Tuesday in a Mumbai courtroom, reminding one of the intrigues of the Mughal empire. The Bombay high court’s majestic Central Court where Lokmanya Tilak had argued for Swarajya, formed a fitting backdrop to the story which unfolded during the cross­examination of Khuzaima Qutbuddin, (image, left), the 74­year­old brother of the late Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, the 52nd Dai or spiritual head of the Dawood Bohra community. The cross­ examination was conducted by Iqbal Chagla. The Syedna died on January 17, 2014, and his son Mufaddal Saifuddin took over as the next Syedna. Qutbuddin has challenged this ascension, claiming that he himself is entitled to that position. While he admitted that none of his 12 brothers and eight sisters, all children of the 51st Dai, had acknowledged openly his claim of being the successor to Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, Qutbuddin maintained that he had been conferred the nass (ie, officially anointed) by the former on December 10, 1965 ­­ in secret.     ʿAshara Mubaraka AH 1440 Majlis 1 English Reflections As has become tradition over the past few years, al-Dai al-Ajal Syedna Aali Qadr Mufaddal Saifuddin TUS announced in today’s waʿaz mubarak the central theme of this year’s ʿAshara Mubaraka, which is to be inspired by and related to the land of Yemen. In particular, each day’s waʿaz mubarak will be based on a town visited by al-Dai al-Ajal Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin RA during his historic visit to Yemen in AH 1381 after which his father al-Dai al- Ajal Syedna Taher Saifuddin RA conferred upon him the title of Mansoor al-Yemen. The first city Syedna al-Muqaddas Mansoor al-Yemen RA visited during his historic visit to Yemen was the city of Zi Jibla, the resting place of Maulatuna Hurra al-Malika RA. With Syedna al-Muqaddas’ lodging in Ib, a close-by city, he travelled to Zi Jibla every morning returning to Ib in the night. Every day Syedna Burhanuddin RA sought blessings with Maulatuna Hurra al-Malika’s RA ziyarat and by leading namaz in her masjid. While in Jibla, Syedna al-Muqaddas RA met with the people of the city, distributed sweetmeats amongst the children of a school and attended a gathering held in his honour. Jibla was once the capital of the Sulayhi kingdom during Maulatuna Hurra al-Malika’s RA reign. This was brought about by her own request to her husband, al-Malik al-Mukarram, Syedna Ali b. Mohammed al-Sulayhi’s son. She suggested that the capital of the kingdom be shifted from Sana’a to Zi Jibla for its strategic, central location in the Sulayhi territories and its temperate climate.

The article highlights Syedi Hakimuddin’s qudsani seerat, his service and devotion, khidmat and fidagiri, for his Dai, his high station in knowledge and sincerity, ilm and khuloos, his dedicated teaching for students of ilm-e Aal-e Mohammad, his guidance for mumineen and travels to their towns, his introduction into Dawat of many worthy customs, khayr rusoom, and his miracles in life and after death.
