  • Court Battle Lays Bare I...Tly Family
5/3/2015 Court battle lays bare inner intrigues of Bohras' priestly family - Rediff.com Print this article Court battle lays bare inner intrigues of Bohras' priestly family Last updated on: April 30, 2015 15:06 IST The uncle versus nephew fight for the spiritual leadership of the Dawoodi Bohras enters the courtroom, spilling family secrets and exposing the divide in the community. Jyoti Punwani reports. Jealousy and intrigue, attacks and assassination attempts the closed and highly exclusive world of the powerful ruling priestly family of the Dawoodi Bohras lay exposed on Tuesday in a Mumbai courtroom, reminding one of the intrigues of the Mughal empire. The Bombay high court’s majestic Central Court where Lokmanya Tilak had argued for Swarajya, formed a fitting backdrop to the story which unfolded during the crossexamination of Khuzaima Qutbuddin, (image, left), the 74yearold brother of the late Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, the 52nd Dai or spiritual head of the Dawood Bohra community. The cross examination was conducted by Iqbal Chagla. The Syedna died on January 17, 2014, and his son Mufaddal Saifuddin took over as the next Syedna. Qutbuddin has challenged this ascension, claiming that he himself is entitled to that position. While he admitted that none of his 12 brothers and eight sisters, all children of the 51st Dai, had acknowledged openly his claim of being the successor to Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, Qutbuddin maintained that he had been conferred the nass (ie, officially anointed) by the former on December 10, 1965 in secret. He was the only witness to this, he said.

  • The Dāʾūdī Bohras (Mustaʿlī Ismāʿīlī Shīʿa) Using Modernity to Institutionalise a Fāṭimid Tradition
Chapter 11 The Dāʾūdī Bohras (Mustaʿlī Ismāʿīlī Shīʿa) Using Modernity to Institutionalise a Fāṭimid Tradition Jonah Blank 1 Introduction The Dāʾūdī (or Dawoodi) Bohras, a community numbering substantially over one million worldwide, represent one of the two branches of Ismāʿīlī Shīʿism to survive into the modern era. Mustaʿlī Ṭayyibī Ismāʿīlīs (as they are described in denominational terms) are the spiritual descendants of Egypt’s renowned Fāṭimid Caliphate. Unlike the Nizārī Ismāʿīlīs (who believe that the line of imāms continued through the succession of clerics bearing the title Aga Khan), the Mustaʿlīs believe that the last Fāṭimid caliph was the twenty- second and final present imām (Abū l-Qāsim Ṭayyib). Since the sixth century AH/twelfth century CE, both spiritual and temporal leadership of the commu- nity has rested in a line of clerics bearing the title of Dāʿī al-muṭlaq, seated first in Yemen and since the tenth/sixteenth century in the Indian states of Gujarat and Maharashtra. Over the past four decades, the Dāʾūdī Bohra clergy has attempted, with great success, to establish a communal identity that is at once universally Islamic and unique to the denomination. It has done so not by rejecting modern or Western ideas and technologies, but by enthusiasti- cally embracing many of them: in this sense, the Bohras have used ‘moder- nity’ as a tool to reinvigorate and reinstitutionalise their core traditions.1 Thus, the Dāʾūdī Bohras demonstrate the resilience and ideological adaptability of Shīʿa Islam. The name ‘Bohra’ is generally presumed to be derived from the Gujarati verb vohrvun (‘to trade’), reflecting the occupation of the overwhelming majority of Bohras throughout their history.

GENESIS: Imam Mustansir (AS) younger son Musta’li, known as Western Ismailis (because of their initial strength in Egypt and Yemen), are today represented by the Bohras. Nazir known as Eastern Ismailis (because of their initial strength in Syria and Iran) are today represented by Khojahs and other followers of the Aga Khan. Musta’li’s son al-Amir either died or (as Bohra doctrine holds) left a son named Abu al- Qasim Tayyib, aged somewhere between two days and two years, who succeeded him as the twenty first imam. Under the Ayyubids and the later Mamluks, Fatimid libraries were destroyed and Egyptian Ismailis were persecuted until nearly all of them either converted or fled to exile. At the death of his father al- Amir, the infant Imam Tayyib (AS) was protected by the most important woman in Musta’li history since the death of the prophet’s daughter Fatima (AS). Al-Malika al Sayyida, the wife of the Fatimid da’I of Yemen. During the rule of al-Hafiz, she ran a rival dawat out of Yemen in the name of the infant Tayyib. The baby imam was hidden away from public eye, thus instituting a second period of satr. The period of satr continues to the present day, with the line of imams continuing (Bohra doctrine holds) from father to son, through the descendants of Imam Tayyib. (AS) The present imam , like all those since Tayyib’s time lives anonymously in the world, utterly unknown to those around him, periodically in contact with the faithful through his da’i al- mutlaq.

SHAFEEQUE AHMED B. NIKHATH YASMEEN Abstract Islam means submission to God, and the one who submits himself to Almighty is a Muslim. Islam has been spread across South India much earlier than it has reached the Northern parts of India. The Muslim Arab merchants who came to India through sea route for trading purpose, brought the principles of Islam to the Southern part especially Tamil Nadu which resulted in the acceptance of Islam by the local inhabitants with their self Keywords: conviction and literally they were not enforced to get converted. It is the simplicity of this faith, not the power of sword which attracted the local Chennai Muslim, people and a number of people accepted Islam by reciting “La‟ Ilaaha Illallah” whole heartedly. Later on the missionary activities of Muslims and Social groups, the invasion of Muslim armies down to the South flourished the popularity of Communities, Islam which enabled the spreading of its principles and concepts in different parts of Tamil Nadu. As a result a number of Muslim communities spread Muslim cultures. almost in all the districts of Tamil Nadu and settled everywhere finding their means of living.

In Southern California, numerous micro- communities identify their inferential beliefs in the way they engage, negotiate, and embrace the extant planning processes and policy regimes of their respective municipalities and cities. The Dawoodi Bohra community is one such growing diaspora of approximately 1.2 million Shi’ite Muslims worldwide that have created micro-community establishments defined by a complex of four sacred spaces: the Masjid (mosque), Manzil (residences), Madrasah (academic institution), and the Mujtama (public space). Their Anjuman-e-Burhanee complex in Woodland Hills in Southern California embodies numerous strategies—from site selection and planning negotiations to the systematic engagements of religious practices—all within the existing physical, social and political constructs of American cities.

  • The Iḥyāʾ of Al-Jāmiʿ Al-Anwar: Religious Values in the Restoration of Sacred Islamic Monuments
The Iḥyāʾ of al-Jāmiʿ al-Anwar: Religious Values in the Restoration of Sacred Islamic Monuments Aliasger Najam Madraswala School of Architecture Oxford Brookes University This thesis is submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the award of Doctor of Philosophy February 2020 For my mother ii ABSTRACT Motivated by religious belief, a small Muslim community known as the Dawoodi Bohras restored the 11th century Fatimid masjid of al-Jāmiʿ al-Anwar in Historic Cairo in 1980 to substantial criticism from the international conservation community. In a process which they termed iḥyāʾ, or to bring to life, the Bohras claimed to have returned the ruined masjid to its ‘original’ state by restoring its function as a site of living tradition. The ‘Euro-American preservation community’, however, insisted that the Bohras had instead created a ‘new’ building and in doing so, had killed the monument’s spirit and sense of ‘antiquity and authenticity’. The genesis of this research study lies in the tension between the Bohra restoration and the criticism levelled against it by proponents of modern conservation.
