The Carrying Trade and the First Railways in England, c1750-c1850 Carolyn Dougherty PhD University of York Railway Studies November 2018 Abstract Transport and economic historians generally consider the change from moving goods principally on roads, inland waterways and coastal ships to moving them principally on railways as inevitable, unproblematic, and the result of technological improvements. While the benefits of rail travel were so clear that most other modes of passenger transport disappeared once rail service was introduced, railway goods transport did not offer as obvious an improvement over the existing goods transport network, known as the carrying trade. Initially most railways were open to the carrying trade, but by the 1840s railway companies began to provide goods carriage and exclude carriers from their lines. The resulting conflict over how, and by whom, goods would be transported on railways, known as the carrying question, lasted more than a decade, and railway companies did not come to dominate domestic goods carriage until the 1850s. In this study I develop a fuller picture of the carrying trade than currently exists, highlighting its multimodal collaborative structure and setting it within the ‘sociable economy’ of late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century England. I contrast this economy with the business model of joint-stock companies, including railway companies, and investigate responses to the business practices of these companies. I analyse the debate over railway company goods carriage, and identify changes in goods transport resulting from its introduction. Finally, I describe the development and outcome of the carrying question, showing that railway companies faced resistance to their attempts to control goods carriage on rail lines not only from the carrying trade but also from customers of goods transport, the government and the general public. -

A guide and list to a collection of Historic Railway Documents www.railarchive.org.uk to e mail click here December 2017 1 Since July 1971, this private collection of printed railway documents from pre grouping and pre nationalisation railway companies based in the UK; has sought to expand it‟s collection with the aim of obtaining a printed sample from each independent railway company which operated (or obtained it‟s act of parliament and started construction). There were over 1,500 such companies and to date the Rail Archive has sourced samples from over 800 of these companies. Early in 2001 the collection needed to be assessed for insurance purposes to identify a suitable premium. The premium cost was significant enough to warrant a more secure and sustainable future for the collection. In 2002 The Rail Archive was set up with the following objectives: secure an on-going future for the collection in a public institution reduce the insurance premium continue to add to the collection add a private collection of railway photographs from 1970‟s onwards provide a public access facility promote the collection ensure that the collection remains together in perpetuity where practical ensure that sufficient finances were in place to achieve to above objectives The archive is now retained by The Bodleian Library in Oxford to deliver the above objectives. This guide which gives details of paperwork in the collection and a list of railway companies from which material is wanted. The aim is to collect an item of printed paperwork from each UK railway company ever opened. -

CAMPAIGNERS in West Yorkshire are extremely concerned about lack of progress by the Government and Network Rail on infrastructure proposals that should deliver improvements for travellers in the next few years, including the TransPennine Route Upgrade (TRU). Three rail user groups and the Yorkshire Branch of Railfuture have written to Andrew Haines, Chief Executive of Network Rail, who was recently been quoted as casting doubt on TRU. In a magazine interview (RAIL 897, 29 Jan’2020) Haines had said the scope of TRU could depend on the high-speed rail proposal “Northern Powerhouse Rail” (NPR). The campaigners say NPR is decades away and will not benefit stations on regional routes that desperately need investment now. Hull History Centre: Account books of John Hudson of Howsham U DX251 Account books of John Hudson of Howsham 1799 Biographical Background: John Hudson of Howsham, a Scarborough merchant and farmer, was probably born in 1756 and died in 1808. He married an Elizabeth Ruston and had seven children, including two daughters and five sons. His youngest son, George Hudson, later became known as 'The Railway King'. George Hudson was born in March 1800 and died on 14 December 1871. He became famous as a English railway financier, earning the nickname "The Railway King”. He initially apprenticed as a draper at Bell and Nicholson in York. In 1820 he was taken on by the firm as a tradesman and given a share of the business. By 1827 it was the largest business in York. Also in 1827, he inherited £30,000 from his great uncle. Hudson played a major part in establishing the York Union Banking Company and he first became Lord Mayor in York in 1837. He was Lord Mayor three times as well as deputy-lieutenant for Durham and Conservative Member of Parliament for Sunderland from August 1845 until 1859. Hudson was instrumental in the expansion of the railways across England and in the Railway Clearing House (1842). He amalgamated the North Midland, the Midland Counties Railway and the Birmingham & Derby Junction Railway in 1844 to become the Midland Railway. He initiated the Newcastle and Darlington line in 1841 and with George Stephenson, planned and carried out the extension of the York & North Midland Railway to Newcastle. By 1844 he had control of over a thousand miles of railway. -

NINETEENTH SUPPLEMENTAL AGREEMENT between NETWORK RAIL INFRASTRUCTURE LIMITED and NORTHERN RAIL LIMITED _____________________________________ relating to the Expiry Date of the Track Access Contract and to Schedule 3 and 5 of the Track Access Contract (Passenger Services) dated 6 January 2010 _____________________________________ 343955 THIS NINETEENTH SUPPLEMENTAL AGREEMENT is dated 2013 and made between: (1) NETWORK RAIL INFRASTRUCTURE LIMITED, a company registered in England under company number 02904587, having its registered office at Kings Place, 90 York Way, London N1 9AG ("Network Rail"); and (2) NORTHERN RAIL LIMITED, a company registered in England and Wales under company number 04619954, having its registered office at Serco House, 16 Bartley Wood Business Park, Bartley Way, Hook, Hampshire, RG27 9UY (the "Train Operator"). Background: (A) The parties entered into a Track Access Contract (Passenger Services) dated 6 January 2010 as amended by various supplemental agreements (which track access contract as subsequently amended is hereafter referred to as the "Contract"). (B) The parties propose to enter into this Supplemental Agreement in order to amend the Expiry date of the Contract and to amend the wording in Schedule 3 : Collateral Agreements to take account of the new franchise agreement and to amend Schedule 5 of the Contract to the latest Model Clause format. IT IS HEREBY AGREED as follows: 1. INTERPRETATION In this Supplemental Agreement: 1.1 Words and expressions defined in and rules of interpretation set out in the Contract shall have the same meaning and effect when used in this Supplemental Agreement except where the context requires otherwise. 1.2 “Effective Date” shall mean 1.2.1 the date upon which the Office of Rail Regulation issues its approval pursuant to section 22 of the Act of the terms of this Supplemental Agreement. -

NORTH YORKSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL (HARROGATE, KNARESBOROUGH, PANNAL AND BURN BRIDGE) (PARKING AND WAITING) (NO 21) ORDER 2015 North Yorkshire County Council (hereinafter referred to as ‘the Council) in exercise of their powers under Sections 1(1), 2(1) to (3) and 4(2) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 (‘the Act”) and Part IV of Schedule 9 to the Act and the Traffic Management Act 2004 (“the 2004 Act) and of all other enabling powers and after consultation with the Chief Officer of Police in accordance with Part Ill of Schedule 9 to the Act, hereby make the following Order: PART I GENERAL (1) When used in this Order each of the following expressions has the meaning assigned to it below: “carriageway” means that part of the road over which the public have right of way for the passage of motor vehicles and excludes anyway over which the public have right of way on foot only; “charge certificate” means the statement that the penalty charge has been increased in accordance with Regulation 21 of The Civil Enforcement of Parking Contraventions (England) General Regulations 2007; “civil enforcement officer” means any officer of the Council who is duly authorised in writing in that behalf (from time to time) by the Council to enforce the provisions of this Order pursuant to Section 76 of the 2004 Act and Section 63A of the 1984 Act; “column” means a column in a Schedule or part of a Schedule referred to or last referred to; “disabled person” means a person who holds a disabled persons’ badge in accordance with the provisions of the Disabled Persons (Badges for Motor Vehicles) (England) Regulations 2000 (No.
