2 White Privilege and Cultural Racism Effects on the Counselling Process Nia Addy Abstract White privilege is an insidious and elusive concept that, when discussed, often generates strong reactions of denial, guilt, shame, discomfort, and defensiveness (Arminio, 2001). This article attempts to provide a précis of what is meant by white privilege and how it manifests in New Zealand society. White privilege and cultural racism are then examined in relation to the counselling process. The necessity is discussed for white counsellors to develop an awareness of their own racial identity in order to better understand and address the impact of race issues on both their sense of self and their work. Most White people, in my experience, tend not to think of themselves in racial terms. They know they are White, of course, but mostly that translates into being not Black.… Whiteness, in and of itself, has little meaning. (Dalton, 2005, p. 15) The “invisible whiteness of being”, as described by D. W. Sue (2006, p. 15), creates a tangled and sticky web of racial dominance and cultural racism. In Western societies, white people are socialised into occupying a position of power and privilege, and by so being, there is little drive or incentive to address issues of white racial identity and the unearned advantages of having light skin (Dyer, 1997; Lago, 2006; Sue, 2006; Tuckwell, 2002, 2006). Thus whiteness is unquestioningly seen as the human norm, and race is something applied to non-white peoples. In other words, “Other people are raced, we are just people” (Dyer, 1997, p. -

The Fringe Insurgency Connectivity, Convergence and Mainstreaming of the Extreme Right Jacob Davey Julia Ebner About this paper About the authors This report maps the ecosystem of the burgeoning Jacob Davey is a Researcher and Project Coordinator at ‘new’ extreme right across Europe and the US, which is the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD), overseeing the characterised by its international outlook, technological development and delivery of a range of online counter- sophistication, and overtures to groups outside of the extremism initiatives. I understand cultural memory as dynamic, multifaceted, and as a widely contestational interplay of past and present in socio-cultural contexts. The making of cultural memory involves various participants and allows us to examine the nexus between individual remembering and culturally mediated memory. Culturally mediated memory appears as a process of the representation and manifestation of the past in the present. By studying the mediality of ‘present pasts,’ we gain an understanding of how the past is remembered and how it is mediated via cultural objects in the present. -

Kuyper and Apartheid: A revisiting Patrick Baskwell (Brandon, Florida, USA)1 Research Associate: Department of Dogmatics and Christian Ethics University of Pretoria Abstract Was Abraham Kuyper, scholar, statesman, and university founder, the ideological father of Apartheid in South Africa? Many belief so. But, there are others, amongst them George Harinck of the Free University in Amsterdam, who don’t think so. The article argues that there is an element of truth in both opinions. Kuyper did exhibit the casual racism so characteristic of the Victorian era, with its emphasis on empire building and all that it entailed. Kuyper was also directly responsible, ideologically, for the social structure in the Netherlands known as “verzuiling” or “pillarization” in terms of which members of the Catholic, Protestant, or Socialist segments of society had their own social institutions. This pillarizing, or segmenting, of society was, however, always voluntary. This is not true of the pillarizing or segmenting of South African society known as Apartheid. While there are similarities between Apartheid and “verzuiling”, especially in their vertical partitioning of the individual’s entire life, the South African historical context, the mediation of Kuyper’s ideas through South African scholars, the total government involvement, and therefore, the involuntary nature of Apartheid, point to their inherent dissimilarity. Apartheid was simply not pure Kuyper. Hence, while the effects of Kuyper’s ideas are clearly discernable in Apartheid policy, the article aims at arguing that Kuyper cannot be considered the father of Apartheid in any direct way. 1. It has been repeatedly noted in the relevant literature that the two display an intriguing yet challenging near-synonymy. However, factors motivating this relationship have not been sufficiently explained to date. This study argues that the particles’ ostensible partial overlap is systematic and non-trivial in nature and that it can be explained by positing two distinct speaker motivations for uttering each particle to mark a constituent in a sentence: While the particle marks a constituent as conform-to-expectation, marks a constituent as counter-to- ii expectation. Each marking is prompted by the discourse situation: If there is (extra)linguistic evidence that the interlocutor is inclined to select the same constituent as the speaker for completing a sentence, then is the appropriate marker. -

Maureen H. O’Connell, Associate Professor & Chair, La Salle University Ignatian Family Teach-In November 8th, 2015, Washington, D.C. Thank you! It is such an honor to be with you, to be back with “the family,” to still be considered part of the family even though I’m playing with a different franchise these days! I am grateful for my history with three Ignatian communities in particular – Saint Joseph’s University, Boston College, and Fordham University – who have given me tools and perhaps more importantly the courage – to take up the calling of my vocation as a theologian everyday. For about 10 years now, ever since I started making pilgrimages around Philadelphia looking for God in community murals and the people who make them, walking through neighborhoods in North Philadelphia where great-grandparents and grandparents lived and sensing my connection to the transformation of “ghettos of opportunity” into “ghettos of last resort”1 and longing to have even an iota of the creativity and resilience of folks who live in them, I’ve discerned the Spirit calling me wade into the troubled waters of racial injustice. I’ve felt called to understand my family, my church, my vocation, what going on in my neighborhood and in my City through the lens of race. It’s not been pretty. It’s not been easy. The way has not been clear. People of color, used to “whitesplaining”2 where racism is concerned, are understandably suspicious. There’s not much they haven’t heard before where good intentioned white folks are concerned. -

Phillip Channing Plemons Horner An Exploratory Study of White People’s Evolving Consciousness and How Their Awareness of White Privilege and Racism Changed Their Consciousness ABSTRACT This study was undertaken to explore the many ways in which a White person’s consciousness changes due to their awareness of White privilege and racism. The research was a qualitative study with a sample of 12 White people who self identified as able to recognize the benefits of their White privilege, accepted their own role in perpetuating racism, were knowledgeable about racial, ethnic, and cultural differences, and are able to talk about race. Through phone interviews, participants were asked to reflect on their lives and offer their narrative of how learning about and accepting their White privilege and racism have changed their consciousness. The findings of the study increase our understanding of how White people’s racial identity is formed, the complex emotions and stages that are part of this formation, and offer important guidance for other White people looking to join in anti-racism work.
