The MARINER's MIRROR The MARINER’S MIRROR The International Journal of the Society for Nautical Research Bibliography for 2013 Compiled by Karen Partridge London The Society for Nautical Research 2 The Mariner’s Mirror Bibliography for 2013 Introduction This, the thirty-first annual maritime bibliography, includes books and articles published in 2013, as well as some works published in earlier years and not included in earlier bibliographies. The subjects included are as follows: naval history, mercantile history, nautical archaeology, biography, voyages and travel, and art and weapons and artefacts. A list of acquisitions of manuscripts precedes the published works cited, and I am, as always, grateful to The National Archives: Historical Manuscripts Commission (TNA: HMC) for providing this. With regard to books, International Standard Book Numbers (isbns) have been included, when available. This bibliography for 2013 was prepared and edited by Karen Partridge. Any correspondence relating to it should be addressed to her at: 12, The Brambles, Limes Park Road, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 5NJ email: [email protected] The compiler would like to thank everyone who contributed to the present bibliography, and always welcomes the assistance of readers. Introductory note to accessions 2013 In its annual ‘Accessions to Repositories’ survey The National Archives collects information from over 300 record repositories throughout the British Isles about manuscript accessions received in the previous twelve months. This information is added to the indexes to the National Register of Archives, and it is also edited and used to produce thirty-six thematic digests that are then distributed for publication in a number of learned journals and newsletters. Dawson, III This dissertation provides analysis on several areas of study related to the history of the United States Marine Corps in the Civil War Era. One element scrutinizes the efforts of Commandant Archibald Henderson to transform the Corps into a more nimble and professional organization. Henderson's initiatives are placed within the framework of the several fundamental changes that the U.S. Navy was undergoing as it worked to experiment with, acquire, and incorporate new naval technologies into its own operational concept.

Commander Franklin Buchanan served as the first Superintendent. His fac- ulty consisted of four officers and three civilian professors. There were 50 students. Initially, the academic and professional instruction required five yearsthe first and last at Annapolis, with the intervening three at sea. In 1850, the Naval School became the United States Naval Academy. The following year, the Academy adopted its current course of instruction which includes four consecutive years at Annapolis, with at-sea training provided during the summers. The Naval Academy moved to Newport, R.I., during the Civil War. In 1865, it was re-established at Annapolis under the leadership of Vice Admiral David Dixon Porter. During these early years, the Academy was one of the few institutions of high- er learning offering a sophisticated undergraduate course in tech- nical education. The late 19th century saw immense changes in naval tech- nology with the conversion from sail-powered, wooden ships to steam-powered vessels of steel, which also resulted in rapid developments in naval weaponry and tactics.

Bradf rd James Burk (Member) (Member) tty Miller Unterberger Albert Broussard (Member) (Head of Department) May 1991 Experimental Ironclad: A Construction and Early Operational History of the USS Galena. (May 1991) Kurt Henry Hackemer, B.A. , University of Chicago Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. Joseph G. Dawson III This thesis analyzes the construction and early operational history of the USS Galena, a Civil War ironclad. It uses the Galena to examine the initial selection process for ironclads, to assess the ability of Northern industry to respond to the technical challenges of the war, to take a closer look at the often contentious process of ironclad construction, and to analyze the impact of this experimental design on the type of ironclads chosen to prosecute the war. The Galena was built as one of three experimental designs early in the war. The other two, the New Ironsides and the Monitor, were relatively successful, while the Galena had mixed results. She proved a tactical failure but a strategic success in the critical summer of 1862. Although unable to perform as well as expected, she had both a psychological and a physical impact during the Peninsula Campaign, playing a critical role in the salvation of General George Brinton McClellan's army after the Seven Days.

  • FOREWORD It Has Been Said That the Scot Is Never So Much at Home As
FOREWORD It has been said that the Scot is never so much at home as when he is abroad. Under this half-jesting reference to one of the characteristics of our race, there abides a sober truth, namely, that the Scotsman carries with him from his parent home into the world without no half-hearted acceptance of the duties required of him in the land of his adoption. He is usually a public-spirited citizen, a useful member of society, wherever you find him. But that does not lessen the warmth of his attachment to the place of his birth, or the land of his forbears. Be his connection with Scotland near or remote, there is enshrined in the inner sanctuary of his heart, memories, sentiments, yearnings, that are the heritage of generations with whom love of their country was a dominant passion, and pride in the deeds that her children have done an incentive to effort and an antidote against all that was base or ignoble. It is a fact that goes to the core of the secular struggle for human freedom that whole-hearted Americanism finds no jarring note in the sentiment of the Scot, be that sentiment ever so intense. In the sedulous cultivation of the Scottish spirit there is nothing alien, and, still more emphatically, nothing harmful, to the institutions under which we live. The things that nourish the one, engender attachment and loyalty to the other. So, as we cherish the memories of the Motherland, keep in touch with the simple annals of our childhood's home, or the home of our kin, bask in the fireside glow of its homely humor, or dwell in imagination amid the haunts of old romance, we are the better Americans for the Scottish heritage from which heart and mind alike derive inspiration and delight.
