Each listing is in a county of the Great Allegheny Passage. All information, including, but not limited to, contact information is subject to change. Any exclusion or inaccuracy was unintentional. If you have updated information for a farm or market listed, or know of an omission that can be added to a list, please contact the Trail Town Program® at 724-216-9160. Farms and markets are categorized based on the county in which they are located. Within each county section, the listings are organized alphabetically. The Trail Town Outreach Corps is a joint project of The Progress Fund and the Student Conservation Association. The program’s mission is to foster economic revitalization and sustainable redevelopment in the Great Allegheny Passage Trail Towns through minds-on and hands-on community service. The Trail Town Program® is a project of The Progress Fund developed in conjunction with the Allegheny Trail Alliance to realize the economic potential of the Great Allegheny Passage. The program’s purpose is to ensure that trail communities and businesses maximize the economic potential of the trail. Here are some of the agricultural terms used throughout these lists and their definitions: Certified Naturally Grown farmers do not use synthetic herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, antibiotics, hormones, or genetically modified organisms. Additionally, livestock must have space for movement and be raised mostly on pasture.1 Community-supported agriculture (CSA) is essentially a subscription to a farmer’s produce. Members buy a share from a farmer at the beginning of the growing season and each week receive a portion of whatever the farmer has harvested.2 Free-range animals have been allowed access to the outside.3 Grass-fed means the animals have had a diet solely of forage consisting of grass, forbs, browse, or cereal grain crops in the pre-grain state. The only exception is milk fed to the animal while weaning.4 Pastured is similar to free-range. However, pastured animals have access to naturally occurring food sources, including insects, grasses and seeds. A movable enclosure may be used to rotate the pasture the animals have access to. This label is not regulated by a governmental or nongovernmental entity, and thus the producer is responsible for using the “pastured” label.5 USDA Certified Organic crops are grown without irradiation, sewage sludge, synthetic fertilizers, prohibited pesticides, and genetically modified organisms. Certified livestock producers must meet health and wellness standards, not use growth hormones or antibiotics, feed the livestock with 100% organic feed, and provide animals access to the outdoors.6 1“Frequently Asked Questions,” Certified Naturally Grown, accessed March 6, 2013, http://www.naturallygrown.org/about-cng/frequently-asked-questions 2 “Community Supported Agriculture,” United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Library, accessed March 6, 2013, http://www.nal.usda.gov/afsic/pubs/csa/csa.shtml. 3 “Meat and Poultry Labeling Terms,” United States Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service, accessed March 6, 2013, http://www.fsis.usda.gov/Fact_Sheets/Meat_&_Poultry_Labeling_Terms/index.asp. 4 “Grass Fed Marketing Claim Standards,” United S States Department of Agriculture Agricultural Marketing Service, accessed March 6, 2013, http://www.ams.usda.gov/AMSv1.0/. 5 “Eggs,” Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture, accessed March 6, 2013, http://cuesa.org/food/eggs. 6 “Organic Standards,” United States Department of Agriculture Agricultural Marketing Service, accessed March 6, 2013, http://www.ams.usda.gov/AMSv1.0/. 6 Farms Allegany County, Maryland Cedar Rock Farm - 301-264-4162 • Certified Naturally Grown vegetables and herbs; grass-fed beef • CSA available Address: 14611 Mile Lane, NW, Mount Savage, MD Website: www.cedarrockfarm.org DeHaven Farm - 301-777-8497 • Vegetables, herbs • CSA available Address: 11215 DeHaven Road NE, Cumberland, MD Munchies Quail and Guinea Farm - 410-417-8245 • Quail and guinea meat and eggs Address: 725 Park Street, Cumberland, MD Website: www.emonstore.com Rice’s Orchard - 301-722-8056 • Vegetables, fruit Address: 11400 Mt.
