Growth rates in double figures empha- sise the high willingness to invest. Fortunately, this development is also reflected in a steady increase of the number of employ- ees. Since 2005, the number of employees increased almost 10 % per year. Regarding the structure of the companies, in relation to the size of the companies, a clear difference is shown between the large paper manufacturing companies and the mostly small processing companies. The percentage of the manufacturing and processing of corrugated cardboard is increasing steadily. In 2006, it achieved almost 25 %, whereas

The thesis follows the approach of first identifying technical and economic potentials in general and then transferring them to the study region. For the quantitative determination of district heating potential in Lusatia, the status quo is determined and a GIS-based analysis is carried out with regard to minimum heat demand densities. The extent to which district heating is suitable for climate-neutral heat supply will be investigated using the potential of renewable and waste heat energy sources. Furthermore, the regional economic effects of developing these potentials are examined. The results show that despite an overall decline in heat demand, there is potential to increase the relative share of district heating in Lusatia.

Anti-Minority Riots in Unified Germany: Cultural Conflicts and Mischanneled Political Participation1 Roger Karapin June 2001 Abstract Anti-foreigner riots in eastern Germany in the early 1990s have usually been explained by ethnonationalism or racism, ethnic competition for scarce resources, and opportunistic political elites. If anti-minority riots are analyzed as a distinct phenomenon with a cross-sectional approach, local political processes emerge as more important causes. Cultural conflicts, the channeling of mobilization from nonviolent into violent forms, local political opportunities for success, and mobilization by social movement organizations convert ethnic conflict and violence into riots. A comparison of riot and non-riot localities in eastern Germany supports this argument. Two large anti-foreigner riots in eastern Germany (at Hoyerswerda in September 1991 and at Rostock in August 1992) created a political sensation, attracting far more attention, outcry, and veiled approval from political leaders than two thousand smaller assaults on foreigners which took place across unified Germany during those two years.

Different practices, policies, academic research and public debates developed, which were mainly concerned with how to deal with this problem. However, the emergence of shrinkage as an urban problem in Germany and what it entails have so far rarely been examined. This includes the starting points and assumptions on which different approaches to shrinkage are based. Das kleinste slawische Volk der Sorben/Wenden Zur Wahrnehmung der Sorben/Wenden Was wissen wir heute in Sachsen, Deutschland und Europa (noch) über die Sorben/ Wenden? Bedauerlicher Weise erstaunlich wenig. Aus diesem Grunde organisierte die Evangelische Akademie Meißen vom 30. Juni bis 02. Juli 2017 ein der Kultur- geschichte und Literatur dieser in den beiden deutschen Bundesländern Sachsen und Brandenburg lebenden slawischen Minderheit gewidmetes Seminar „Vom Spreewald bis zum Lausitzer Bergland. Sorbische Begegnungen“ im wunderschönen, an der Neiße gelegenen Kloster Marienthal.1 Dabei standen identitätsstiftende Mythen, Sagen und Legenden wie auch aufklärende Vorträge, literarische Lesungen und Dis- kussionen im Mittelpunkt. Die wenigen Vorstellungen von den Sorben bzw. Wenden greifen zumeist auf Stereotype zurück. Dabei geht der für die sorbischen Stämme verwendete Begriff Wenden, Winden bzw. Windische auf die legendären Venedi/Ve- neter, die nordöstlichen Nachbarvölker der Römer zurück. Diese Bezeichnung wurde dann später auch für die angrenzenden Slawen verwendet. Zunächst war der Begriff Wenden weitaus verbreiteter als der der Sorben, und „um den anhaltenden Streit ‚Sorbe und/oder Wende‘ zu entschärfen, hat sich inzwischen die Verwendung beider Begriffe eingebürgert.“2 Von den deutschen Nationalisten, besonders während der Na- ziherrschaft, wurde der Begriff „Wenden“ in erster Linie negativ und diskriminierend gebraucht, er zeigte sich in einer die totale Assimilation der slawischen Minderheit anstrebenden „Wendenpolitik“ des Dritten Reiches.3 Etwa seit 1989/1990 wird von den Niedersorben die Bezeichnung „Wenden“, nicht zuletzt auch in Abgrenzung 1 http://www.evangelische-akademien.de/veranstaltung/vom-spreewald-bis-zum-lausitzer-ber- gland-sorbische-begegnungen-tagung-im-kloster-st-marienthal/ [Zugriff: 10.02.2018].
