Ted Schmidt: Teacher Witness to Faith TED SCHMIDT is the the former editor of the Catholic New Times. As well he is the author of Shabbes Goy: a Catholic Boyhood on a Jewish street in a Protestant City (2001) and Journeys to the Heart of Catholicism 2008 and Never Neutral: A Teaching Life (2012) He attended St Peter’s elementary school, St Michael’s College High School and the St Michael’s College, University of Toronto majoring in Classics and English. He studied scripture at Corpus Christi College under Fr Hubert Richards. Ted was a lifelong high school teacher in both the public and Catholic system. He spent 18 years teaching religion at Neil McNeil High school and 10 years at Bishop Marrocco-Thomas Merton. In a lifetime of teaching he has been honoured by religion teachers and colleagues at large. In 1991 he received the Ontario English Teachers' Award of Merit, the highest distinction the association grants. In 1998 he received the Glorya Nanne award for his writing on Catholic education. In 2002 he received the Social Justice Award from the Toronto Secondary Catholic Teachers Association. In 2006 the Ontario Teachers’ Federation honoured him with the Greer Memorial Award for his “outstanding commitment to publicly funded education.” A pioneer in Holocaust studies, he was the first teacher in Canada to systematically teach the Holocaust (1968) and has done several workshops for the Holocaust Remembrance committee. In 1993 he co-authored the Ministry of Education OAC course on Philosophy. For 30 years Ted has taught OECTA courses on scripture, social ethics and the sacraments as well as doing several series on biblical themes in parishes. -

While this is a time of sadness and uncertainty for us within the Diocese, it is a great honour for Bishop Richard to be named the Archbishop of Winnipeg and we join in offering congratulations and prayers for him in his new ministry. During this time of transition, Bishop Richard, although no longer Bishop of the Diocese of Victoria will continue as Diocesan Administrator. The Office of Vicar General and Episcopal Vicar cease, as do the positions of those on the Council of Priests. The Chancellor, the Judicial Vicar, and the College of Consultors continue to serve their mandate until a new Bishop is appointed. ... it is a great honour for Bishop Richard to be named the Archbishop of Winnipeg and we join in offering congratulations and prayers for him in his new ministry. “When Bishop Richard assumes the duties of his new position in Winnipeg, the College of Consultors will meet to choose a Diocesan Administrator. This priest will continue to serve his role until such time as our new Bishop takes Office. His role will be, as the title indicates, to administer the Diocese until the new Bishop arrives and he will work in close collaboration with the members of the College of Consultors and the Chancellor. -

Most Reverend Richard J. Gagnon, D.D. Archbishop of Winnipeg ichard Joseph Gagnon was born on June 17, 1948 in R Lethbridge, Alberta to parents Therese Demers Ga- gnon and George Gagnon. He moved to British Columbia with his family while still a child and attended both Catho- lic and public schools. He graduated from Saint Thomas Aquinas Regional Secondary School in North Vancouver before proceeding to study philosophy, history and English at Simon Fraser University, completing his Teaching Certi- fication for British Columbia in 1976. Bishop Gagnon’s Seminary Studies were taken at the Pontifical Beda College in Rome from 1978-1983. Rev. Richard Gagnon was ordained to the priesthood at Holy Rosary Cathedral on June 24, 1983, the Feast of St. John the Baptist, by Archbishop James Carney. In the Archdiocese of Vancouver he served in many ca- pacities, including as Pastor, Vicar General, Archdiocesan Consultor, Director of the Office of Religious Education and member of the Presbyteral Council. In February 2003, Pope John Paul II named Father Ga- gnon a Prelate of Honour, in recognition of his faithful service to the Church and exemplary performance of his duties. At his investiture ceremony Archbishop Exner rec- ognized that Msgr. Gagnon had “rendered outstanding dis- tinguished service in the Church in Vancouver as a loving, effective, and dedicated pastor, a man who is ever ready to meet new challenges — a servant ready to go wherever called.” On May 14, 2004, Pope St. John Paul II appointed Richard Joseph Gagnon as the 16th Bishop of the Dio- cese of Victoria. -
