On March 14, 1978, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Casa ltaliana and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. I 1). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. One witness spoke in favor of designation. There were no speakers in oppo sition to designation. Columbia University has expressed its support of the designation. The Commission has also received several letters in sup port of designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS Casa ltal iana, a nee-Italian Renaissance style institutional building, was designed as a center for Italian studies by the prestigious architectural firm of McKim, Mead & White. Bui It in 1926-27, it is located on the Morningside Heights campus of Columbia University at Amsterdam Avenue and I 17th Street. €asa Ita I iana had its beginnings in 1914 when a group of students of Ita I ian descent organized an Ita I ian club at Columbia Col lege in an effort to promulgate knowledge of modern Italy. In 1920 a group of 25 students formalized themselves into the Circolo Italiano. Under the chairmanship of student Peter Riccio (later a professar of Ita I ian at Columbia), they began . seeking funds to establish .a CCi>llectionof books specializing in Italy's contribution to culture and learning and facilities to house the col taction. -

Above the Immigration Wall, Walking New York
Above the Immigration Hall, Walking New York Describing the theme of her narrative relief panels mounted on a 300-foot wide space above the immigration booths, sculptor Deborah Masters emphasizes the familiar, as well as the diverse in New York. “I look at New York through a different lens, to show the many aspects that make the city so fantastic,” she said. When passengers reach the third site-specific installation, “Walking New York,” they gaze up at a startling series of 28 reliefs – each measuring 8 feet high by 10 feet wide across a space as wide as the length of a football field. The reliefs are cast in a fiberglass modified gypsum, with a depth of relief of up to six inches and a weight of some 300 pounds each. The panels are vividly painted to show scenes of people riding the subway, working on Wall Street, crossing important bridges like the Brooklyn and Manhattan and enjoying city diversions, such as parks and outdoor restaurants. The large number of murals allowed the artist to reveal the complex layers of the city – the energy generated by a parade, the fatigue of factory workers, the joy of a wedding and the colors of its many ethnic markets. “These are scenes I believe returning New Yorkers will recognize and immediately and visitors will anticipate eagerly,” said Masters. Masters attended Bryn Mawr College, where she studied with Chris Cairns and Peter Agostini, and the New York Studio School, where she studied with George Spaventa, Clement Meadmore, and Nick Carone. Following art school, she spent three years in Italy studying and working on her sculpture. -

Introduction When I was approached by the editors of Physics in Perspecti6e to prepare an article on New York City for The Physical Tourist section, I was happy to do so. I have been a New Yorker all my life, except for short-term stays elsewhere on sabbatical leaves and other visits. My professional life developed in New York, and I married and raised my family in New York and its environs. Accordingly, writing such an article seemed a natural thing to do. About halfway through its preparation, however, the attack on the World Trade Center took place. -

Begun 1895, completed 1897, architects McKim, Mead & White. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1973, Lot 1 in part, consisting of the land on which the described building is situated. On June 14, 1966, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of Low Memorial Library, Columbia University and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site. (Item No. 36). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Two witnesses spoke in favor of designation. There were no speakers in opposition to designation. In a letter to the Commission, Grayson Kirk, President of Columbia University, said that the University was "happy to accept this designation." DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS Low Memorial Library is a majestic building of truly monumental proportions. It is situated on a slight rise overlooking the south campus of Columbia University. This Roman stone building, designed in the form of a Greek cross, displays great classic grandeur. One of its chief features is an imposing Ionic portico (porch), consisting of ten superb fluted columns, supporting a simple cornice and high attic story, inscribed with references to the original King's College charter. An oct~gonal shaped drum, containing large semi-circular (lunette) windows, rises above the central portion of the building. Crowning the whole is a round low dome. Modelled on the Pantheon in Rome, the library building exhibits but little orna mental decoration and relies for its beauty on the strength of its pure classic form.
