This paper has been prepared by focusing on the service processes provided by ‘THE PALACE ON WHEELS’, a pioneer of luxury train travel in India. It analyses the existing service blueprint from tourism and travel industry and recommends how to enhance the quality service as well as efficiency level. This service includes both the sections of Industry i.e. travel and tourism. Based on the customer reviews and feedback of the Palace on Wheels, a new service blueprint has been designed which shows the present and potential flaws in the existing process. High participation level from the tourists along with service providers and employees add a new value to the efficiency level of the service quality. ICRA notes that Central Coalfields Limited (CCL, JCRL’s parent, owning 64%1 of the shareholding) plans to significantly ramp-up coal production in the North Karanpura coalfield over the medium term, which, along with shorter lead distances, faster rake turn-around times, and lower trip costs following the commissioning of JCRL’s railway line, partly mitigates the traffic fluctuation risk. Moreover, given the strategic importance of the rail corridor to CCL's expansion plans, the operational synergies between CCL and JCRL remains high, which supports JCRL’s business risk profile. In addition, JCRL’s credit profile benefits from the strong financial profile of its parent CCL, as well as IRCON International Limited (IRCON), which has a target shareholding of 26% in JCRL. JCRL’s rating also factors in the fixed revenue share clause with MoR for providing reserve services, which partly mitigates risks associated with inadequate increase in freight rates to cover for rising operation and maintenance (O&M) costs. The rating, however, is tempered by JCRL’s exposure to high project implementation risks, leading to risks of time and cost over-runs, and the company’s sizeable dependence on external borrowings, which is likely to lead to modest debt coverage metrics during the initial years post commissioning. -

Transportation engineering two consists of two parts: the first part is relating to railway engineering and the second part relates to airport engineering. We will be taking up different aspects related to railway engineering and airport engineering in succession during these lecture series. Today, we will be starting with the introduction of railway engineering and in this introduction we will be taking up different aspects as mentioned here. We will be looking at the importance of the transportation systems. We will go through the history of the Indian railways, we will look at the zoning systems adopted by the Indian railways and then, we will also be looking at some of the important characteristics by which we can compare different transportation systems by the special reference to rail and road transport systems. (Refer Slide Time: 01:33) Now we start with the importance of transportation system. When we start with this one, as you have seen, we have different systems working by which we can transport not only the passengers but the goods. In general, the transportation system can be defined by using this definition which includes number of characteristics of any transportation system taken in general. (Refer Slide Time: 02:05) It can be defined as, it is an optimum combination of Fixed facilities, Flow entities, Operational plans, Storage facilities and Control systems that permit people and goods to overcome the friction offered by geographical spaces in a most efficient, safe and convenient manner in order to achieve time and place utility for the desired activity. -

Indian Railways Budget Speech 1988-89 Speech of Shri Madhavrao Scindia Introducing the Railway Budget, 1988-89 on 24 th february, 1988 Mr. Speaker, Sir, I rise to present the Revised Estimates for the year 1987-88 and Budget Estimates for the year 1988-89 for the Indian Railways. Introduction 2. It was gratifying for us in the Railways to have received continued support and encouragement from Honourable Members from all sections of the House, and ever-increasing co-operation from members of the public. This served to enthuse and inspire Railwaymen to new heights in the year 1986-87, and in the current year 1987-88. 2.1 The best productivity indicator of freight operations, Net Tonne Kilometres per Wagon per Day, which had increased to 1296 (BG), in 1985-86, reached a new high when it touched 1420 in the year 1986-87-- an improvement of as much as 10%. 1350 was the target for the terminal year of the 7th Plan. I am happy to say, we have steamed way past this figure three years ahead of time. It has enabled the Indian Railways to retain the position it had achieved last year as a world leader in freight capacity utilisation, leaving behind countries even in the developed world. Members will appreciate the magnitude of the increased freight transport effort when I state that with only a very marginal increase in the wagon fleet, the first two years of the 7th Plan together, have produced an additional 41.1 billion net tonne kilometres. This has surpassed by as much as 56% in these two years alone, the transport increase of 26.2 billion in the entire five year period taken together, of the 6th Plan. -
