Notes on Cassida Ferruginea and Cassida Mongolica in Japan, with Descriptions of Their Reproductive Systems (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Cassidinae)

Cassida ferruginea GOEZE is recorded from Japan for the first time. This species was previously misidentified and noted under name C. panzeri WEISE. Occurrence of Cassida mongolica BOHEMAN in Japan is confirmed based on new material. Male and female reproductive systems are redescribed for C. ferruginea and described for the first time for C. mongolica. Key words: entomology, faunistics, Chrysomelidae, Cassidinae, Cassida mongolica, Cassida ferruginea, Japan. INTRODUCTION CHÛJÔ (1934) was the first to comprehensively study Japanese and Taiwanese Cassidinae (s. str.); he listed 34 species. YASUTOMI (1952) listed 24 species of Cassidinae (s. str.) from Japan. KIMOTO (1966) revised Japanese Cassidinae and listed 27 species. KIMOTO (1994) treated records of C. mongolica from Japan as misidentification of C. fuscorufa, Thlaspida formosae as the synonym of T. biramosa, and listed 25 species from Japan. OTSUKA (1994) recorded C. mongolica from Japan again. BOROWIEC (1999) resurrected C. japana and C. crucifera from the synonym. KOMIYA (2002) described Notosacantha nishiyamai from Okinawa, Japan. Presently 29 species of Cassidinae (s. str.) are known from Japan. For a long time the male and female genitalia of Cassidinae have not been consi- dered in identifying species and in systematics. BORDY (1995a, b) and SEKERKA (2005, 2006) studied genital structures of Cassidinae, and the taxonomic and phylogenetic 326 HaRUkI SUeNaga importance of the male and female genitalia has been considered for many groups (BORDY & DOGUET 1987, BORDY 2000, BOROWIEC & Świetojańska 2001, Świetojańska 2001, BOROWIEC & SKUZA 2004, SASSI & BOROWIEC 2006, BOROWIEC & opalińska 2007, BOROWIEC & POMORSKA 2009). -

Harper's Island Wetlands Butterflies & Moths (2020)
Introduction Harper’s Island Wetlands (HIW) nature reserve, situated close to the village of Glounthaune on the north shore of Cork Harbour is well known for its birds, many of which come from all over northern Europe and beyond, but there is a lot more to the wildlife at the HWI nature reserve than birds. One of our goals it to find out as much as we can about all aspects of life, both plant and animal, that live or visit HIW. This is a report on the butterflies and moths of HIW. Butterflies After birds, butterflies are probably the one of the best known flying creatures. While there has been no structured study of them on at HIW, 17 of Ireland’s 33 resident and regular migrant species of Irish butterflies have been recorded. Just this summer we added the Comma butterfly to the island list. A species spreading across Ireland in recent years possibly in response to climate change. Hopefully we can set up regular monitoring of the butterflies at HIW in the next couple of years. Butterfly Species Recorded at Harper’s Island Wetlands up to September 2020. Peachey Introduction Winter cutworm is the common name for the larval stage of the large yellow underwing moth (Noctua pronuba [Lepidoptera: Noctuidae]). The cutworm has tolerance for cold temperatures, and larval feeding activity persists throughout fall and winter. Adult N. pronuba moths have been detected in Oregon for at least a decade, and the species is common in many different ecological habitats. Epidemic outbreaks of adult moths have occurred periodically in this region, resulting in captures of up to 500 moths per night. However, larval feeding by N. pronuba has not been a problem in Oregon until recently. In 2013 and 2014, there were isolated instances reported, including damage by larvae to sod near Portland and defoliation of herb and flower gardens in Corvallis. In 2015, large numbers of larvae were observed around homes, within golf courses, and in field crops located in Oregon and Washington. Grebennikov (Orenburg City). After that we made several expeditions to different localities in the South Urals to confirm the presence of this species there. In 2019 and 2020 we collected a series of fresh specimens of Catocala helena in Orenburg Region. One specimen was collected west of the Volga in Samara Region. -

Die Revision ist das Resultat zunächst von Beobachtungen an Eiern von ex ovo-Zuchten, dann von Untersuchungen der Larvalornamentik, der Larvalmorphologie (Mundwerkzeuge), des Imaginalhabitus und nicht zuletzt der männlichen Genitalmorpho logie. Die Kriterien, die für die Revision dieser komplexen Gattung angewandt wurden, wer den erläutert. Abstract: According to the list of Hartig & H einicke (1973), the species of Noctua Linnaeus are to be distributed on seven genera, two of them are new, three of them are re vived, one - Divaena Fibiger , 1993 - just has been published. The revision is the result of experiences with ex-ovo-breedings, the investigations of the pattern and morphology of the larvae and last not least the examination of male genitalia and wing pattern. Criterions taken for the revision are explained. The Lepidoptera of Bucharest and Its Surroundings (Romania)

This study presents a synthesis of the current knowledge regarding the Lepidoptera fauna of Bucharest and the surrounding areas within a distance up to 50 kilometers around the Romanian capital. Data about the fauna composition are presented: the results of the research work beginning with the end of the 19th century, as well the results of the research work carried out in the last 15 years. The research initiated and done by the author himself, led to the identification of 180 species which were unknown in the past. Even if the natural habitats from this region have undergone through radical changes in the 20th century, the area still preserves a quite rich and interesting Lepidoptera fauna. The forests provide shelter to rich populations of the hawk moth Dolbina elegans A. Bang-Haas, 1912, one of the rarest Sphingidae in Europe, and some other species with high faunistical and zoogeographical value as: Noctua haywardi (Tams, 1926) (it is new record for the Romanian fauna from this area), Catocala dilecta (Hübner, 1808), Tarachidia candefacta (Hübner, [1831]), Chrysodeixis chalcites (Esper, [1789]), Aedia leucomelas (Linnaeus, 1758), and Hecatera cappa (Hübner, [1809]). We also present and discuss the current status of the protected Lepidoptera species from the surroundings of the Romanian capital for the first time. Résumé. Ce travail représente une synthèse des connaissances actuelles concernant la faune de lépidoptères de Bucarest et de ses zones limitrophes sur un rayon de 50 km autour de la capitale de la Roumanie.
