E-mail: [email protected] Introduction This paper provides data on one new and 88 rare Lepidoptera species found in 5 administrative districts and municipalities of Lithuania in 2018–2019. Two species (Lycaena dispar and Phibalabteryx virgata) are included into the Red Data Book of Lithuania. Some species have been repeatedly found after a break of several decades in Lithuania. The Drymonia obliterata was recorded in Lithuania for the first time. Material and Methods The main data was collected during field trips in 2019. This study was focused on the observation of nocturnal moths - in total 75 nights were spent for that. Studies were carried out in various areas of North-western Lithuania. Over 7000 specimens of Lepidoptera have been identified during this study. Observations were carried out in 37 locations in the districts of Klaipėda, Kretinga, Skuodas, Mažeikiai and municipalities of Palanga and Neringa. Various entomological methods were used for collecting the specimens: some types of sugar baits, netting and light-trapping with the 500 W blended mercury lamp bulb. Part of data in the research area of Ylakiai was collected using automatic light trap with 250 W mercury vapour lamp bulb. The material was identified using various identification guides (Sterling & Parsons, 2012; Skou, 1986; Hacker et al.,2002). Collected specimens and photos are stored in the private collection of the author. A species new for the Lithuanian fauna is marked with an asterisk *. Supposedly they were either erroneously determinated or incorrect noted from the region under consideration since Eversmann 's work. 289 species are recorded from the re gion in addition to Eversmann 's list. This paper is the fifth in a series of publications1 dealing with the composition of the pres ent-day fauna of noctuid-moths in the Middle Volga and the south-western Cisurals. This re gion comprises the administrative divisions of the Astrakhan, Volgograd, Saratov, Samara, Uljanovsk, Orenburg, Uralsk and Atyraus (= Gurjev) Districts, together with Tataria and Bash kiria. As was accepted in the first part of this series, only material reliably labelled, and cover ing the last 20 years was used for this study. The main collections are those of the authors: V. Biogeographic relict, extinction risk, global warming, species richness, sub-alpine prairies Abstract. During the last few decades the tree line has shifted upward on Mediterranean mountains. This has resulted in a decrease in the area of the sub-alpine prairie habitat and an increase in the threat to strictly orophilous moths that occur there. This also occurred on the Pollino Massif due to the increase in temperature and decrease in rainfall in Southern Italy. We found that a number of moths present in the alpine prairie at 2000 m appear to be absent from similar habitats at 1500–1700 m. Some of these species are thought to be at the lower latitude margin of their range. Among them, Pareulype berberata and Entephria flavicinctata are esti- mated to be the most threatened because their populations are isolated and seem to be small in size. The tops of these mountains are inhabited by specialized moth communities, which are strikingly different from those at lower altitudes on the same massif further south. The majority of the species recorded in the sub-alpine prairies studied occur most frequently and abundantly in the core area of the Pollino Massif.

Despite the proximity of Sredna Gora Mountains to Sofia, the insect assemblages of this region are poorly studied. As a result of two studies carried out as a part of an Environmental Impact Assessment in the Natura 2000 Protected Areas: Sredna Gora and Popintsi, a rich diversity of insects was discovered, with 107 saproxylic and epigeobiont Coleoptera species and 355 Lepidoptera species recorded. This research was conducted during a short one-season field study in the surrounding areas of the town of Panagyurishte and Oborishte Village. Special attention was paid to protected species and their conservation status. Of the Coleoptera recorded, 22 species were of conservation significance. Forty-five Lepidoptera species of conservation importance were also recorded. KEY WORDS.WORDS. Two new species and two new subspecies: Catopta albonubila argunica, ssp. n. (Locus typicus: East Trasbaicalia, Kuenga, 45 km SW. Sretensk), Catopta perunovi, sp. n. (Locus typicus: Russia, Altai Rep., near Ongudai), Cossus cossus dauricus, ssp. n. (Locus typicus: Russia Transbaikalia, Chita Province, Nizhnii Tsasutchei), Phragmataecia pacifica, sp. n. (Locus typicus: Russia, Dagestan, 5 km E. Urma) are described. Besides, a new species from S. Mongolia Catopta saldaitisi, sp. n. (Locus typicus: S. Mongolia, Omnogovi Aimak, the Gobi Altai Mts., Gurvan Sayhan) is described. For each species bibliography and distribution map are given.

Radiation of this group occurred in all biomes of tropical America and was accompanied by extensive phenotypic and ecological diversification. Here we performed phylogenetic analyses using DNA sequences from three plastid loci to reconstruct the evolutionary history of Gesnerioideae and to investigate its relationship with other lineages of Gesneriaceae and Lamiales. Our molecular data confirm the inclusion of the South Pacific Coronanthereae and the Old World (OW) monotypic genus Titanotrichum in Gesnerioideae and the sister-group relationship of this subfamily to the rest of the OW Gesneriaceae. Calceolariaceae and the NW genera Peltanthera and Sanango appeared successively sister to Gesneriaceae, whereas Cubitanthus, which has been previously assigned to Gesneriaceae, is shown to be related to Linderniaceae. Based on molecular dating and biogeographical reconstruction analyses, we suggest that ancestors of Gesneriaceae originated in South America during the Late Cretaceous.

  • What's "Up"? a Critical Loolc at the Basic Terms of Canopy Biology^
BIOTROPICA 32(4a): 569-596 2000 REVIEW AND VIEWPOINT What's "Up"? A Critical Loolc at the Basic Terms of Canopy Biology^ Mark W. Moffett Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, 3101 Valley Life Sciences, University of California, Berkeley, California 94720, U.S.A. ABSTRACT The lack of recent critiques about terminology has led to the frequent misuse or confusingly varied use of the words that are more or less specific to the field of terrestrial canopy biology. I provide definitions for ca 170 terms and subterms, with translations into four languages. Rather than limit coverage to tree crowns, I define canopy biology as the study of life within any aboveground parts of all plant communities, temperate and tropical. This broadened perspective enables ecologists to consider the entire range of challenges faced by organisms living in aboveground plant life, from just above the rhizosphere to the outer limits of plant growth into the atmosphere. Further, this redefinition may reduce the potential for anthropocentric biases in interpreting life on trees or other plants; encourage the use of alternative ecosystems for hypotheses that may be difficult to address in treetops; and promote more general conceptual thinking about life on vegetation, most notably the importance of scaling in ecology. Among the salient points in terminology: the concept of "stratification" has been criticized in part because strata have been defined many ways, but a flexible application of the word is central to its utility; the source of nutrients is pivotal in distinguishing

  • Harper's Island Wetlands Butterflies & Moths (2020)
Introduction Harper’s Island Wetlands (HIW) nature reserve, situated close to the village of Glounthaune on the north shore of Cork Harbour is well known for its birds, many of which come from all over northern Europe and beyond, but there is a lot more to the wildlife at the HWI nature reserve than birds. One of our goals it to find out as much as we can about all aspects of life, both plant and animal, that live or visit HIW. This is a report on the butterflies and moths of HIW. Butterflies After birds, butterflies are probably the one of the best known flying creatures. While there has been no structured study of them on at HIW, 17 of Ireland’s 33 resident and regular migrant species of Irish butterflies have been recorded. Just this summer we added the Comma butterfly to the island list. A species spreading across Ireland in recent years possibly in response to climate change. Hopefully we can set up regular monitoring of the butterflies at HIW in the next couple of years. Butterfly Species Recorded at Harper’s Island Wetlands up to September 2020. • Lepidoptera ) in Urban Habitats: the Moths of Warsaw I
MUSEUM AND INSTITUTE OF ZOOLOGY POLISH ACADEMY OF SCIENCES FRAGMENTA FAUNISTICA Fragm. faun. W arszawa, 31.12.2002 45 131-145 Grażyna W i n i a r s k a Butterflies and moths ( Lepidoptera ) in urban habitats: the moths of Warsaw I. Noctuidae, Pantheidae, Nolidae Abstract: 302 moth species of the families Noctuidae, Pantheidae and Nolidae have been recorded in Warsaw to date. Of these, in historical times were recorded 286 species (86 of them only then, including one - M. acetosellae, which can no longer be found in Poland). Most of these species are now regarded as very rare and occurring only locally in Central Europe (e.g. I. calvaria, S. taenialis, C. pacta, P. moneta, P. cheiranthi, H. ononis, A. caliginosa, D. oo, T. ludifica). Contemporary records list 212 species, most of which are widely distributed in Poland and classified as abundant (e.g. D. trifolii, M. pallens, X. c-nigrum, A. exclamationis). 7 species: M. confusa, A. gamma, S. scutosa, H. peltigera, S. exigua, L. zollikoferi and A. ipsilon are migrant visitors. Key words: Noctuidae, Pantheidae, Nolidae, Lepidoptera, urban habitats, Warsaw Author's address: Museum and Institute of Zoology PAS, Wilcza 64, 00-679 Warszawa, POLAND INTRODUCTION Studies of Lepidoptera from urban habitats have not been carried out in too many Polish towns. Warsaw is now the most extensively studied Polish town, with research carried out both in the city and in its suburbs, starting from the mid-19th century. As early as 1764-1798, during his expeditions K.H. Perthes, the court geographer of king Stanisław August Poniatowski collected, among others, insects ( Coleoptera, Orthoptera and Lepidoptera).
