  • Many Voices, One Nation Booklist A
Many Voices, One Nation Booklist Many Voices, One Nation began as an initiative of past American Library Association President Carol Brey-Casiano. In 2005 ALA Chapters, Ethnic Caucuses, and other ALA groups were asked to contribute annotated book selections that best represent the uniqueness, diversity, and/or heritage of their state, region or group. Selections are featured for children, young adults, and adults. The list is a sampling that showcases the diverse voices that exist in our nation and its literature. A Alabama Library Association Title: Send Me Down a Miracle Author: Han Nolan Publisher: San Diego: Harcourt Brace Date of Publication: 1996 ISBN#: [X] Young Adults Annotation: Adrienne Dabney, a flamboyant New York City artist, returns to Casper, Alabama, the sleepy, God-fearing town of her birth, to conduct an artistic experiment. Her big-city ways and artsy ideas aren't exactly embraced by the locals, but it's her claim of having had a vision of Jesus that splits the community. Deeply affected is fourteen- year-old Charity Pittman, daughter of a local preacher. Reverend Pittman thinks Adrienne is the devil incarnate while Charity thinks she's wonderful. Believer is pitted against nonbeliever and Charity finds herself caught in the middle, questioning her father, her religion, and herself. Alabama Library Association Title: Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café Author: Fannie Flagg Publisher: New York: Random House Date of Publication: 1987 ISBN#: [X] Adults Annotation: This begins as the story of two women in the 1980s, of gray-headed Mrs. Threadgoode telling her life story to Evelyn who is caught in the sad slump of middle age.

  • Away from Home Are Some and I—Homeplace in Fannie Flagg's
English Language and Literature Studies; Vol. 8, No. 1; 2018 ISSN 1925-4768 E-ISSN 1925-4776 Published by Canadian Center of Science and Education Away from Home Are Some and I—Homeplace in Fannie Flagg’s Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café: A Black Feminist Lens Natthapol Boonyaoudomsart1 1 International Program in English Language Studies, Department of English, Faculty of Liberal Arts, Thammasat University, Bangkok, Thailand Correspondence: Natthapol Boonyaoudomsart, Department of English, Faculty of Liberal Arts, Thammasat University, Bangkok, Thailand. E-mail: [email protected] Received: December 23, 2017 Accepted: January 13, 2018 Online Published: February 3, 2018 doi:10.5539/ells.v8n1p20 URL: https://doi.org/10.5539/ells.v8n1p20 Abstract This article aims to explore the centrally essential notion of homeplace as a site of resistance presented in Fannie Flagg’s Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe (1987). Close reading of the novel advances the argument that both the symbolic Whistle Stop and the cafe represent the counteractive force against sexist, classist and racist ideologies that basically undermine self-esteem and empowerment of literary characters in the text. Despite gender, class and race, the discussed characters, however they are marginalized, can safely take refuge, heal and recover themselves in the guarded icons connoting deep meanings. By directing a critical gaze at rootedness, the discussion is grounded in Black feminist criticism that, while largely exclusive to the experiences of women of color, values the significant role of homeplace and informs how the novel responds to this feminist perspective. In the collective effort to offset discrimination, it is stressed that one is to regain a sense of self in the marginal space by embracing Black feminism.

  • Risk of Being Hit by Moving Parts of an Aerial Amusement Ride
Risk of being hit by moving parts of an aerial amusement ride Purpose To highlight and manage the risk of being hit by fast moving parts in the loading/unloading zone of certain aerial amusement rides, such as the 'Inverter' or a Frisbee style ride. Background An operator of an Inverter Ride in USA died on 19 October 2008 when he was hit by the counterweight of the ride. The investigation found that the victim was taking measurements for future repairs and apparently thought the ride had finished its cycle. He moved into the path of the moving counterweight, which hit and killed him. The carriage and counterweight of certain aerial amusement rides are physically not in the loading zone during the majority of the operation cycle. For a split second, these moving parts return and sweep across the passenger loading zone. It is critical that the operator (or any other person) is not in the hazardous zone during the operation cycle of these rides. Examples of such rides operating in Australia include the Claw, Hangover, Ranger, Ali Baba and No Limit. Photograph 1 shows an aerial ride and the gates into the hazardous zone. This alert is not intended to cover situations where: maintenance gates are normally locked and the keys are only available to authorised persons; gates which are subject to documented lockout procedures, e.g. access gates leading to roller coaster track areas. Photograph 1: View of an aerial ride showing the gates into the hazardous zone. Recommended control measures Owners of these types of rides must implement appropriate control measures such as: 1.

During the 2005-2006 school year, I facilitated a book club with ninth and tenth grade girls participating in the Umoja Youth Empowerment Program. This book club provided an opportunity for teen girls to read and discuss with peers and adult mentors issues in young adult texts written by African American female authors. This book club aimed to examine how African American female readers discussed African American young adult literature (AAYAL) in an out-of-school context. In Chapter One, I outline the theoretical framework that undergirds this study. It is largely informed by feminist and Black feminist/womanist theories that offer a way to discuss social, personal, cultural, and literacy issues concerning African American adolescent girls and women.
