We also have regular discussions on the current pedagogical problems, which some of my students face in their teaching experiences. Presently I am working on the article on J. S. Bach’s Six Cello Suites for publication in Cello Forum for the American String Teacher Association.

STATEMENT OF MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY AND GOALS

My teaching goals are to provide guidance for young musicians that would help them to become good cellists, as well as complete musicians, artists, and teachers. I always encourage my students to go to as many concerts as they can, to listen to different performers, master classes, to use any opportunity to perform chamber music, to take lessons from different teachers and to be open to different ideas. I teach my students to use all of their intelligence, patience and endurance to achieve their professional goals. I help them to develop stamina and courage to constantly push and challenge themselves. I always guide my students to apply all their musical knowledge to their concert performance, to keep cultivating expressiveness of their tone, style, personality, elegance, finesse, full range of emotions, overall intelligence and staying alert against any occurrence of a bad taste. My students learn not only how to sing on the cello, but how to speak as well. They

14 learn to portray various emotions – after all it is the world of emotions we are presenting to our audiences. They also learn to perform for the imaginable audience while practicing at home; learn to understand that a convincing performance of any composition demands a peculiar combination of extroversion and introversion, rhetoric and aristocracy, brilliance and intimacy. It takes a special kind of mind.

I encourage my students to have an ideal and try to achieve it, not to be afraid to fail, which is a necessary part of learning, and in addition to teach themselves how to enjoy every little progress they make.

During my private lessons and weekly Studio Classes we explore the following ideas and topics:  The basic approach to practicing;  The physiology of playing cello and correcting physical problems through the relaxation and learning the art of self-observation;  Collaborating with other musicians, knowing what it takes and how to achieve the most productive rehearsals and enjoyable performances;  Preparation for orchestra auditions and understanding what is expected;  Practicing orchestra parts for the upcoming UNT symphony concerts;  How to be critical but kind;  How to try to keep the ears and minds open;  How to recognize the intentions of the ;  How to think of greatness and align themselves with greatness;  How to develop a noble attitude toward the Art;  And finally - the joy of learning how to learn.

21 “I’ve never heard that high-register cello sound more stingingly heartfelt than from Osadchy’s touch.” “…They were all fine, and especially Osadchy with his background notes, every one scenic perfection.” “Beautifully played music led to spirited ovation.” Lloyd Dykk, Vancouver Sun

“Osadchy is equally impressive, revealed here as a poet: translating the sweet sadness of the Russian psyche with both authority and grace.” Michael Scott, Vancouver Sun

“His love for music showed in every note, every pause. It showed in the tremendous skill and concentration required to maintain absolute perfection of tone, and a certain hidden tension balanced with a surface serenity.” Maev Brennan, the Daily Courier

“Paragon of Russian élan” Michael Scott, Vancouver Sun

“I felt most fortunate to hear Eugene Osadchy, who played with gorgeous richness that I longed to hear more of.” Nicole Tsong, Anchorage Daily News

“From the fierce knit of his brows to his expression of pure bliss, Osadchy was a visual treat as his passionate playing spurred his fellow musicians on to a performance Mendelssohn would have been proud to witness.” Noelle Hahn, Anchorage Daily News

“The riveting cellist Eugene Osadchy reached deep for that “magical connection” between musician and audience.” Louise Whitney, Georgia Straight

“Cellist Eugene Osadchy showed a fine array of carefully applied nuances in the expressiveness of his beautifully sounding instrument, coloring Schumann’s Fantasy Pieces into a musical painting with delicate shadings.” Karel ten Hoop, White Rock Review, BC

“Eugene Osadchy’s performance was very powerful, engaging and inspiring, particularly the range of his great tone. If you did not attend this concert it would be difficult to imagine how beautiful and potent the sound of a cello could be. The resonance of Mr. Osadchy‘s cello was amazing. It was also touching, moving, and motivating to hear such mastery, perfection and outstanding brilliance.” Dallas Chinese Times

22 “A night to remember.

Osadchy and Markina played Dmitry Shostakovich's lone cello sonata, and this was the highlight for me in a program that was consistently played with passion and artistry. I had to fight back tears in the Shostakovich and could not believe the way they traded off in the third movement. Even the long early Rachmaninov Piano Trio was beautiful; I'd never heard it scaled so perfectly. For the first time, it seemed to make perfect sense.I could not believe the concert! You rarely hear music this good …”

“I wish to thank you for the time, energy and effort you have put into Katie’s training. I think it is such a wonderful thing when someone can spot something in a person that others may not see, and be willing to take the chance on them in order to develop their talents. My impression is that you backed my daughter when others were not so sure… I know that Katie thinks the world of you and so values your insights and approach… Know that your faith in her is such a wonderful gift. Her passion for music is a beautiful gift to our family and me. You are doing amazing work with her.” Richard J. Oppenheim

“I can't tell you how much the concert meant to me. Every note you played was beautiful. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. RN and I were just talking about your elegant playing. The Handel was lovely and the Brahms was....well, magnificent. Thank you again!"

Sandy Stout, musician

”That master class we had, even though I felt like a complete idiot afterwards, was one of the largest and most profound turning points in my existence as a cellist, because you simply gave me the wake up call of my career to date. And later I realized that my thoughts were blinded by paranoia, you weren’t breaking me down about my then really confusing and stupid technique, you were encouraging me because you knew or believed I was capable of so much more. I realize now that I was angry with myself for letting so many technical aspects of my playing go unnoticed. You once said to me “You are your own best teacher”. What a powerful line that was, and how much more sense it makes now! Benjamin Franklin once said, “Most lessons are learned outside the classroom”. You have taught me a way to teach myself many things. That’s a sign of an incredible teacher.” Aristide Du Plessis, Stellenbosch Conservatory, South Africa

“Thank you for a great year. I am so honored to have you as my teacher and mentor.”

Johannes Kleinmann, DMA student

“I want to thank you for everything you have done for me…I really felt all the time that you had my best interests at heart, and that you really wanted to help me to understand and enjoy the music I was playing. The concepts you taught me will stick with me forever…Also thank you for always being warm, friendly and funny during the lessons- it’s been so nice to be able to look forward to my lessons each week with you. I really feel that you‘ve help me to grow by showing me what is and what isn’t important, and by helping me brush aside things that were bothering me. I just think it is very rare that the teacher is a great role

27 model; as both a musician and a person, and the fact that you are both of those things has made a really big difference for me…”

Ross Gasworth, DMA student

“Thank you so much for the past 8 years! I never once felt pressured to play the cello. It was always fun to play with you and for you. You have helped me to explore all the possibilities in music, and finding my own style and emotional expressions. You made me the cellist I am today and that is the most important lesson for me. You’ve always been there for me, guide me and direct me into a mature musician and a person I am today. I am very grateful that I’ve met you and had the privilege of studying with you for all those years.”

Grace Ho, UNT /Manhattan School of Music

From UNT student evaluations:

Studying with Mr. Osadchy is my favorite part of UNT.” “Mr. Osadchy is an outstanding teacher and artist. Passionate, enthusiastic and highly motivating he makes an hour of chamber music coaching go by like minutes. I deeply admire his musicianship, sensitivity and strong commitment. “ “Mr. Osadchy is a wonderful teacher. He is very honest, but never demeaning. He cares about his students and he wants us to do well. He is very articulate and expressive, and a consummate musician.” “Mr. Osadchy has extraordinary capability of knowing how far I can go with my playing. I feel that when we work together, the possibilities for my improvement as a musician are limitless. He is unique and special individual. He is admired by all of his students for his wisdom and his optimism in his teaching and overall look on life…” “I really enjoyed working with Mr. Osadchy. I learned a great deal what it takes to be a musician and how to enjoy making music. It was a privilege for me to have a coach like him…” “…Thank you for inspiring me and making me a better musician and cellist…” “…Mr. Osadchy is not only fantastic cellist, but also a wonderful teacher. Whenever I am having trouble with a concept, he successfully explains it to me through words and his playing. Every lesson is a pleasure and I am thankful for every bit of knowledge he has passed on to me…” “…Mr. Osadchy is very encouraging even when giving criticism. Communicates ideas very well in many different ways. He is also extremely inspiring musician, he make learning the cello fun, enjoyable art, not just a study of the instrument. We are blessed to have him at UNT…” “…Mr. Osadchy inspired me drastically these past semesters as well as increasing my overall musical knowledge... “

28 “…I've really enjoyed being your student this semester, you probably hear this a lot but you are a great educator, leader and performer and there is still so much I wish to learn from you…”

SETE™ Score Report

SETE™ Scores

About SETE™ SETE™ is a psychometrically valid faculty teaching evaluation instrument that minimizes bias by controlling for student demographic influences. The per-course outcome is a single numerical value of a faculty member's effectiveness on a scale of 1 - 1000. The SETE™ Scale Score replaces the raw distribution score normally seen on end-of-course survey reports.

The scale scores shown below are on an interval scale similar to that used by other standardized tests such as SAT or GRE. Course means are computed for each of the three effectiveness sub-factors: Organization and Explanation of Materials, Learning Environment, and Self-Regulated Learning. An overall (general factor) effectiveness mean is computed for each course. The overall mean (SETE™ Score) for each course should be used to infer the degree to which an instructor's teaching is perceived by students to be effective. The intent is that the scores can be applied to a continuous improvement model that shows individual instructor growth over time. Instructors can have confidence in the scale score recognizing that factors of student bias have been controlled.
