A Discography of the Choral Symphony by J. F. Weber In previous issues of this Journal (XV:2-3; XVI:l-2), an effort was made to compile parts of a composer discography in depth rather than breadth. This one started in a similar vein with the realization that SO CDs of the Beethoven Ninth Symphony had been released (the total is now over 701). This should have been no surprise, for writers have stated that the playing time of the CD was designed to accommodate this work. After eighteen months' effort, a reasonably complete discography of the work has emerged. The wonder is that it took so long to collect a body of information (especially the full names of the vocalists) that had already been published in various places at various times. The Japanese discographers had made a good start, and some of their data would have been difficult to find otherwise, but quite a few corrections and additions have been made and some recording dates have been obtained that seem to have remained 1.Dlpublished so far. The first point to notice is that six versions of the Ninth didn't appear on the expected single CD. Bl:lhm (118) and Solti (96) exceeded the 75 minutes generally assumed (until recently) to be the maximum CD playing time, but Walter (37), Kegel (126), Mehta (127), and Thomas (130) were not so burdened and have been reissued on single CDs since the first CD release. On the other hand, the rather short Leibowitz (76), Toscanini (11), and Busch (25) versions have recently been issued with fillers. -

Harry T. Burleigh was a star student of Dvorákˇ at the National Conservatory in New York. A talented composer and singer, he exposed the Czech composer to American spirituals and was in turn encouraged by Dvorákˇ to perform his native African American folk music. Two generations later, Copland and Bernstein conceived a clean, clear American sound that conveys the wonder and awe of open spaces and endless possibilities. Anotace Diplomová práce „Carl Orff: Carmina Burana“, jak již ze samotného názvu vyplývá, pojednává o skladateli Carlu Orffovi a jeho nejslavnější skladbě, kantátě Carmina Burana. V první části shrnuje život skladatele, stručně charakterizuje jeho dílo a kompoziční styl. Druhá část, věnovaná samotné kantátě, je zaměřena především na srovnání několika verzí kantáty. Jedná se o původní originální symfonickou verzi, autorizovanou komorní verzi, a pak také o transkripci pro symfonický dechový orchestr. Annotation The thesis „Carl Orff: Carmina Burana” deals with composer Carl Orff and his most famous composition the cantata of Carmina Burana, as is already clear from the title itself. In the first part the composer's life is summarized and briefly his work and compositional style are characterized. The second part is dedicated to the cantata itself, it is focused on comparing several versions of the cantatas. There is one original symphonic version, the Authorized chamber version, and a transcription for symphonic band. Min-Ad: Israel Studies in Musicology Online, Vol. 15, 2018 (2) Materials of the First International Conference on Music Education in the Community “Traditions, Challenges and Innovations,” Tel-Aviv – Jerusalem, May 14-17, 2017 Current Trends in the Implementation of Educational Concerts of Symphony Orchestras: A Review of Literature LEONI HADJITHOMA European University, Cyprus Abstract: This presentation focused on the current trends in the implementation of educational concerts of symphony orchestras. The aim was to collect, organize and present innovative approaches on how to design enjoyable educational concerts for students and provide them with memorable experiences. Data was collected from orchestra websites, reports, books and published thesis and doctoral dissertations. Results show that educational concerts are usually designed by a conductor often in collaboration with the director of the music education department of an orchestra. Teacher and student resources, and teacher training are provided to prepare the students for the experience. The choice of repertoire depends on the learning objectives of each concert, but the musical tastes and needs of the students should always be taken into consideration. The students are actively engaged in various ways during the concert. Assessment of educational concerts is carried out and the results are used internally for improvement of future concerts. Keywords: educational concerts, symphony orchestra, trends Introduction Many symphony orchestras include in their annual programs educational concerts for students in collaboration with schools to educate the audience of the future and enrich the services they offer to the public. At the same time, educational concerts are an important part of the music curriculum in education and give students the opportunity to gain additional experiences, while interacting with the community they belong to. -
