Attention all scalliwags and explorers: Are your kids interested in sailing the seven seas, swinging on a rope, dropping into the sea, and building their own pirate ship? The life of a pirate is not for the couch-potato - get up and be active this summer at Airborne! Every day is a new adventure, and a new pirate joke of course! Monday: What does it take to be a Pirate? Campers will pick out their very own pirate name, and add their name to the crew list. Now that the campers are official Pirates, it’s time for them to explore some of the physical tasks pirates have to do. Using the different equipment like the ropes, trampoline, bars, ladders and balance beams we will learn how to climb, jump, swing and balance (for sword fighting) like a pirate. Each camper will get a turn to complete the Pirate Agility Obstacle Course, that includes each of these tasks, to earn gold coins. Tuesday: Battle at Sea! Pirates face so many challenges… can you get around with only one leg? Can you walk the plank without falling in? Can you defend your ship and sink the other ships in return? Can you earn your golden treasure? Come and sail the friendly seas, if you dare! Arrr! Wednesday: Building a Pirate Ship! Campers will learn about all the different parts of a pirate ship and then work as a crew and build their very own ship. -

The Best Totally-Not-Planned 'Shockers'
Style Blog The best totally-not-planned ‘shockers’ in the history of the VMAs By Lavanya Ramanathan August 30 If you have watched a music video in the past decade, you probably did not watch it on MTV, a network now mostly stuck in a never-ending loop of episodes of “Teen Mom.” This fact does not stop MTV from continuing to hold the annual Video Music Awards, and it does not stop us from tuning in. Whereas this year’s Grammys were kind of depressing, we can count on the VMAs to be a slightly morally objectionable mess of good theater. (MTV has been boasting that it has pretty much handed over the keys to Miley Cyrus, this year’s host, after all.) [VMAs 2015 FAQ: Where to watch the show, who’s performing, red carpet details] Whether it’s “real” or not doesn’t matter. Each year, the VMAs deliver exactly one ugly, cringe-worthy and sometimes actually surprising event that imprints itself in our brains, never to be forgotten. Before Sunday’s show — and before Nicki Minaj probably delivers this year’s teachable moment — here are just a few of those memorable VMA shockers. 1984: Madonna sings about virginity in front of a blacktie audience It was the first VMAs, Bette Midler (who?) was co-hosting and the audience back then was a sea of tux-wearing stiffs. This is all-important scene-setting for a groundbreaking performance by young Madonna, who appeared on the top of an oversize wedding cake in what can only be described as head-to-toe Frederick’s of Hollywood. -

But how does one deter- mine what is "best" when choosing books for young people? Good books, like good companions, should broaden a student's world, encourage him to appreciate what is lovely, and help him discern between truth and falsehood. -
Spanners and Wrenches
Spanne rs and Wrench es - the various types open spanners - ring spanners - adjustable - box spanner - socket allen keys - torque wrench - pipe wrench - basin spanner - tips Spanners come in all shapes and sizes, many being developed to deal with a specific job. By far the most important consideration when using a spanner is to ensure that it fits the nut perfectly. Too loose, and it will round the comers of the nut - and slip, often damaging the nut. Spanner and your hand. When purchasing spanners, select good quality tools. The best types are forged from carbon steel or chrome vanadium, if not abused, these will last a lifetime. Open ended - 'C' spanner The open ended spanner is the most common type, and may have a single or double end. The head has its jaws offset by about 15 degrees from the run of the shaft. This is so the spanner can be turned over to engage different flats of a nut when working in confined spaces. Another version, called an obstruction spanner, is designed for use in confined spaces. It has one head set at anything upto 90 degrees to the shaft, and the shaft may have a slight curve. Ring spanner As the name implies, the ring spanner usually has a completely enclosed head, and may have six or 12 flats. A 12 flat spanner engages upon the corners of the nut and can engage both hexagon and square bolts. A six flat spanner is normally shaped to fit against all 6 sides of hexagon nuts, this ensures a very tight fit and can allow considerable force to be applied. -

When a single spot is left illuminating the chest, the music comes to a crashing climax and quickly subsides to continue playing in the background. With the musical climax, the lid of the chest opens with a horrifying groan. Light starts to emanate from the chest, and the spotlight dims. Voices and the sounds of action begin to issue forth from the chest. The music continues underneath.) To Whom It May Concern: a Survivor Speaks up (790 Words)
To Whom It May Concern: A Survivor Speaks Up (790 words) August 4, 2016 10:32 a.m. To whom it may concern . I didn’t expect to be writing an email that morning. With three children under five, I wanted, and needed, to spend my daytime hours savoring the simple, rich delights of my kids—and getting in a few hours of my own work whenever I could. My husband, Jacob, was a full--time graduate student and held down a job, so he was rarely home before dinner. That morning, looking for the grocery list I’d typed up the night before, I logged into my laptop. As it happens, I had left my Face-book tab open. That’s when I saw it—a trending news story posted just a few hours earlier: “A Blind Eye to Sex Abuse: How USA Gymnastics Failed to Report Cases.” There’s a shocker, I thought. My husband and I had been appealing to church leaders over a similar issue involving another church they had been supporting, and the wound felt very fresh. I glanced around to make sure my five-year-old son, already a fluent reader, was nowhere nearby, and I clicked the link. What I read filled me with a grief I can’t express: USA Gymnastics had been systematically burying reports of sexual misconduct in a filing cabinet—complaints about fifty-four member coaches over ten years—and some of those coaches had gone on to abuse little girls for years.1 I wanted to cry. I knew all too well what those precious children had endured. -
