In his first year he led Rider to a 21-win season, including a 14-13 record in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. In his second season, he was named the co-winner of the MAAC Baseball Coach of the Year award, leading the Broncs to a play - off berth and a third place finish in the MAAC. Prior to coming to Rider Davis was the head coach at Georgia Southwestern State University from 2001-2004. The four-time NJCAA Division III National Coach of the Year at Gloucester County College, Davis has compiled 637 victories in his head coaching career with just 285 losses, including 66 wins at Rider and an 11-year stint at Gloucester CC where he won four National Junior College titles and eight Regional Championships. Davis was 137-87 at Georgia Southwestern, winning the 2002 conference regular season and finishing with a Na - tional NAIA Ranking of fifth, earning Georgia Dugout Club NAIA Coach of the Year honors. Davis has sent 17 Barry Davis of his players on to the professional ranks, including Scott Knazek of the 2006 Rider squad. Davis also coached the National Junior College Athletic Association all-star team in 1999 which defeated Team Canada. A 1987 graduate of Bridgewater (VA) College, Davis has assisted at George Mason and Frostburg State. Davis was an All-Conference and All- State shortstop at Bridgewater, earning team MVP honors as a junior. Davis is Rider's eighth baseball coach and just the third since 1960. He resides in Morrisville, PA with his wife, Rhonda and daughter, Amanda. His son, Derek attends Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia. A 2003 graduate of Monmouth University, Carone came to Rider from Wagner College where he served as assistant coach. Carone has also served as assistant coach at New Jersey Institute of Technology and at Stevens Institute of Technology under former Rider pitcher John Crane ‘96. “Jim wants to be a successful college baseball coach and his desire to be the best is what we want here at Rider,” said Rider Head Coach Barry Davis. “He has a familiarity with Rider and we are very comfortable with him taking charge of our pitchers.” A former First Team All-Eastern College Athletic Conference and First Team New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association selection, Carone was the Northeast Conference Pitcher of the Year in 2002. “Jim has pitched at a high level and has coached with quality coaches in the state,” said Davis. “We are a better Jim Carone program with Jim Carone on our staff.” During the summer, Carone has served as assistant coach for the Concord Quarry Dogs of the New England Collegiate League and the Jersey Shore Tides of the ABC Collegiate Baseball League. He was also a player in the New England Collegiate Base - ball League in 2002 with the Middletown Giants. At Wagner, Carone coached pitcher Andrew Bailey who was a sixth round pick in the 2006 Amateur Baseball draft. “I am looking forward to helping Coach Davis and the Rider baseball program achieve success and contend in the MAAC on a yearly basis,” said Carone. Thomas Carr, the former assistant coach at Hamilton High School West, returns for a fourth season with the pro - gram as a volunteer assistant coach. Carr was a catcher for William Paterson University in the mid-1990s, and his 1995 team advanced to the Division III World Series. Carr served as an assistant coach at Mercer Community College and Hamilton High West. He led Hamilton to the 2000 New Jersey Group III State Championship. “It is a great situation for Rider to have someone with his desire to be a part of our program,” said Davis. “He is a team guy and plays an important role in any success we may have. Tom will coach the catchers and coach first base during the games.” “It is an honor to be part of Rider University and Coach Barry Davis’ staff,” said Carr.

He would spend 35 years in baseball, 27 in the majors. Biographical History Michael James Ryan was born on November 25, 1941 in Haverhill, Massachusetts. His father was John Ryan and his mother was Lorraine Ryan. John Ryan “worked as a foreman at a shoe factory in Haverhill owned by his brother Dan Ryan. Lorraine Ryan was a homemaker.”1 Mike has six siblings (five brothers and a sister). Mike came from an athletic family. His father was a tackle who nearly made the Boston Yanks of the National Football League and “His grandfather’s cousin Jack Ryan had been a major-league ballplayer, breaking in with Louisville of the old American Association in 1889. Jack Ryan later caught for the National League Boston Beaneaters from 1894 through 1896, and finished his playing career with the Washington Senators, appearing in one game in each of the 1912 and 1913 seasons”2 In addition, Paul Ryan, Mike’s uncle, was a minor league A ball pitcher.

UNI BASEBALL CELEBRATES 100 YEARS OF WINNING Dating back to 1893, no University of Northern Iowa athletic team has won more games than the Panther baseball program. This season, UNI baseball opens its lOOth season with 952 wins all-time. (No baseball team was fielded in 1903-04, 1909-10 and 1943-45.) Originally begun when the school was known as Iowa State Normal School, the baseball team has represented the school when it was also known as Iowa State Teachers College and the State College of Iowa before assuming its present title in 1967. Starting in the years with Captain Avery as coach of the first two squads, the Panthers have built a program that thrives on hard­ working young men dedicated to being the best they can be on the diamond and in the classroom. Last year was no exception, as five Panthers; Ryan McGuire, Kevin Briggeman, Greg Woodin, Scott Sobkowiak and Aaron Houdeshell were named academic all-MVC by the sports information directors of the league.

I lusted after the various sports games advertised in the magazines until my mom finally relented and bought Strat-O-Matic Football for me in 1972. I got SOM’s baseball game a year later and I was hooked. I would get the new card set each year and attempt to play the in-progress season by moving the traded players around and turning ‘nameless player cards” into that year’s key rookies. I switched to APBA in the late ‘70’s because they started releasing some complete old season sets and the idea of playing with those really caught my fancy. Between then and the mid-nineties, I collected a lot of card sets.

It has a taped handle and is from his days with the Phillies. 5. Aaron Boone 2000 Adirondack 182B This bat shows moderate to heavy use and has a taped handle.
