Every which way we have turned this year there has been some awesome event on, and the past 3 months have been no different with gradings galore and many awesome events. We were all still coming down from the natural high that was Hell Camp 3 in August when we had the first of the “new” AHG Sydney gradings at Parramatta, designed to increase the already high-quality Hapkido we pride our organisation for. Under the new Grading System, students from all 3 Sydney Dojangs are tested together. This system further moved us in the direction of the 3 Sydney Dojangs working closer together on Hapkido events. Also as part of the new Grading System, in August we had the first of the Pre-Tests for Blue, Brown and Red Belts. Run like a typical grading, Senior Belts were put through their paces and required to pass the Pre-Test in order to be able to go for grading. The Pre-Test in August was a huge success for the new Grading System, with most people passing and great feedback given to all the students involved. Sydney 4, October lived up to its name and was a Month of Madness jam-packed with Hapkido events. It was excellent to see students getting involved in all the extra events and wanting to learn more. The OTR Sydney 4 weekend was a fantastic training opportunity for all students. The weekend included a Kids’ Seminar, at the end of which Grandmaster Geoff threw each kid, a seminar on Old School Techniques from a syllabus that dated back to 1986!, dinner at The Black Rose September was a quiet month in the lead up to the famous Hapkido Month of Madness (October) yet for a quiet month it was still full of Hapkido events from Black Belt Club Seminars to gradings! The end of September saw a number of students Café for an All-You-Can-Eat Pizza and Pasta bonanza, and successfully grade to their next belt colour. This time the seminars by a Wing Tsun Instructor and Guro Floro who AHG Sydney Grading was hosted by Hurstville and all 10 brought in his Kali Sticks and taught us all Sinawali. students were awarded their new belt! The origins of Hwa Rang Kwan can be traced back to the Korean United Methodist Church (constructed in 1928), the first Korean Church to be constructed in the United States by and for Koreans. In 1969, Pastor Song offered the name “Hwa Rang Kwan” to a Korean Youth Group at 712 Polk Street that was run by the former Korean Association President Min Hee Rhee, father of Taekwondo legends and actors Masters Phillip and Simon Rhee. During this same time, a man by the name of Master Dong Kie Shin opened a Hwa Rang Kwan dojang (martial arts’ school) in the Miadong district of Seoul, Korea. In 1971, Master Shin moved to San Francisco and continued his training at the Polk Street school and in 1973, he opened a Hwa Rang Kwan of his own, the Hwa Rang Kwan Martial Arts Center, on Fillmore Street.

  • Kwan's Name: “Bluewaves” Meaning a Youngster's Spirit and Vitality
The Development of the “Kwan’s” Kwan: in Korean literally means building or hall, but when used in martial arts it can also refer to a school or clan of martial artists who follow the same style and/or leader. At the time, there were 9 major Kwans throughout Korea and once someone joined a particular Kwan, it was very difficult to transfer to another Kwan. When someone wanted to transfer to another Kwan, his original Kwan Jang had to authorize and approve the transfer, but in reality, the Kwan Jang usually threatened the member using authoritative means in an effort to persuade the potential transferee to not leave. This was a critical issue in those days. Chung Do Kwan Established by Won Kuk Lee, seated in the middle and next led by Duk Sung Son, the back row, second from the right. After the independence of Korea, the Chung Do Kwan, one of the five key Dojangs, was founded first. It symbolized Chung Do Kwan's name: “Bluewaves” meaning a youngster's spirit and vitality. Chung Do Kwan's founder, LEE Won Kuk, moved to Japan when he was 19 years old in 1926. While in Japan, he first attended middle and high school, and then entered the Law School of Chuo University. Then he entered Japan's Karate headquarters, the Song Do Kwan (Shotokan). He received Karate instruction from Karate's father, Gichin Funakoshi. There, he learned Karate with Song Moo Kwan's founder, RO Byung Jick. Later, he moved back to Korea and taught Tang Soo Do in the Yong Shin school hall in Suh Dae Moon Gu's Ochun Dong, Seoul because he had a good relationship with Japan's Cho-sun Governor General Abe in 1944.

Independent Tang Soo Do Association YU GUP JA TRAINING MANUAL © Copyright South Hills Karate Academy (Gene Garbowsky) No part of this document may be reproduced, copied or distributed without express permission from Master Gene Garbowsky Published May, 2013 A Message from Sa Bom Nim Gene Garbowsky, Kwan Jang Nim, Independent Tang Soo Do Association As a member of the Independent Tang Soo Do Association, I hope that you will come to re- alize the benefits of training in Tang Soo Do. As you may know, I have been teaching this Martial Art to hundreds of students over the past 30 years. I truly believe that every man, women, and child can benefit in many ways from practicing Martial Arts and Tang Soo Do. What are Martial Arts? It is the name given to the traditional systems of self-defense that have been practiced in Eastern and Western societies for thousands of years. Masters of the ancient Martial Arts ultimately discovered that mastery of the body comes through mas- tery of the mind. Therefore, the practice of Martial Arts is a way to a more fulfilling life. It is a path to freedom from self-confinement and the ultimate goal to mental and physical har- mony. Martial Arts training can absolutely change a person physically, psychologically, and emo- tionally in a very positive way. Regular physi- cal activity energizes the body, and since martial arts are based on natural law, the body can quickly reach top conditioning. Once physical changes develop, they soon lead to the mental and emotional improve- ments that many seek through the martial arts.

KWAN CHANG CHRONICLES WEST COAST HWA RANG DO® ACADEMY NEWSLETTER OF FEATURES AND INFORMATION Issue 17, Volume 1 Spring 2010 A Message from the Founder of Hwa Rang Do As I was struggling to open my first school fifty years ago, I often dreamt of this moment. A time when Hwa Rang Do practitioners from across the globe would gather to celebrate and recognize each others' achievements as well as sharing tales of courage and self-sacrifice. I came to this country to fulfill my destiny of sharing with everyone this beautiful and magnificent ancient art, to uphold honor, justice and peace in the world. Many have sacrificed much to spread Hwa Rang Do and I want to thank all of them for believing in me and the art. There are many lost tales of our ancestor warriors 1800 years ago. The book known as the Hwa Rang Segi which documented the lives of over 100 Hwa Rang knights and other books were destroyed over a century ago and thought lost forever. For 100 years there only remained the fragmented sto- ries of many knights and generals that relate their great service to country and countrymen, their undying loyalty to family, their devotion to friends, their courageous deeds and their love of nature and life. Thankfully, one of these books, the Hwa Rang Segi, was discovered a few years ago and the first ever Eng- lish translation of this historic treasure has recently been completed. The past 50 years of Hwa Rang Do has been an effort to re-write the lost books: Hwa Rang Segi, Samauk Yusa and Samauk Segi with modern tales of chivalry and honor.

  • Kuk Sool Hapkido Syllabus
Kuk sool hapkido syllabus Continue According to Mark Tedeschi, in his mighty volume, Hapkido and Tradition - Philosophy - Technique, The History of Martial Arts is essentially an oral tradition. Very little was actually recorded until recently. When we explore a wide range of martial arts, it quickly becomes apparent that much of their history is contradictory. It is not uncommon to find a particular martial art, tracing its roots to the dawn of time. Specific stories are often touted as a fact where they can be little more than anecdotes, or a free collection of unfounded myths. This is especially true of Korean martial arts, given that the country is so closely surrounded by China and Japan. Tedeschi claims that the Korean Peninsula was first inhabited by nomadic tribes from China, around 30,000 BC He also says that the descendants of these nomadic peoples were almost certainly influenced by contacts with the Chinese, who created outposts in Korea around 108 AD. B.C. Permanent wars between the two countries later led to the creation of three kingdoms in Korea: Goguryeo, Sylla and Baekje, from 18 BC The Period of the Three Kingdoms lasted almost 700 years before they were united in 668 AD During the Three Kingdoms, as they say, between Korea, China and Japan there was a lot of intercultural exchange and contact. It is therefore very likely that the traditions, culture and practice of martial arts in each country have also influenced each other to some extent. Participants can download a copy of our Korean martial arts program in the download section of our website.
