Located on a beautiful campus in southeastern Pennsylvania, the College consis- tently has been rated as one of the top institutions in the North by U.S. News & World Report. The men and women who study at Elizabethtown enjoy a dynamic learning environment that engages the mind and heart, nurtures service and lead- ership, advances personal development and social transformation, and embraces the world of work and the domain of the spirit. Mission Molded by a commitment to “Educate for Service,” Elizabethtown College is a community of learners dedicated to educating students intellectually, socially, aes- thetically and ethically for lives of service and leadership as citizens of the world. As a comprehensive institution, the College offers academic programs in the liberal arts, sciences and professional studies. Combining classroom instruction with experiential learning, these programs advance independent thought, personal integrity and social responsibility as the foundations for a life of learning. Founded by members of the Church of the Brethren, the College believes that learning is most noble when used to benefit others and affirms the values of peace, non-violence, human dignity and social justice. Vision This College is a place of intellectual adventure where boundaries are erased and the excitement of discovering new ideas occupies center stage. Learning occurs inside and outside the classroom. Faculty members are actively engaged in scholarly activity because the College values intellectual curiosity and this important work informs and enhances teaching. Members of the College community come from all walks of life and backgrounds, and this mix enriches the culture of the campus. Respected for their diverse and unique contributions, community members also possess a sense of common purpose. The Qualities of Our Education Our educational experience blends a high standard of scholarship with four signature attributes, which include commitments to educate our students in a relationship-centered learning community, to foster in our students’ international and cross-cultural perspectives, to complement classroom instruction with experiential-learning opportunities, and to prepare our students for purposeful lives and meaningful work. 2 Elizabethtown College Elizabethtown College Relationship-Centered Learning Elizabethtown College is a place of people – individuals who live and learn in relationship to each other. At the College, students receive personal attention as all employees commit to express sincere and genuine interest in the educational success of our students. Our College’s classes deliberately are kept small to sup- port our students’ individual needs and challenge them to grow. Our educational programs engage students in ways that capture their most pro- found attention, confront them with learning experiences that are compelling and call out from them responses that reach beyond what even they thought possible. In this learning community, our faculty members and other employees demon- strate their passion for their subjects and for continued learning so that our stu- dents see how compelling deep engagement is. International and Cross-Cultural Perspectives Students today must be familiar with and understand the interconnected ways of life in the 21st century. When students enroll at Elizabethtown College, they encounter this international world in a variety of ways. Our staff includes faculty members and other employees who are citizens of countries from around the world, who speak a multitude of languages, and who have had myriad study and residential experiences on other continents. Students also encounter this interna- tional world when they study alongside students from countries distinct from their own. And, students encounter our international world when they visit, study in or live in cities as diverse as Harrisburg, Philadelphia, London, Beijing and Quito. Students at Elizabethtown also encounter the larger world in a globalized cur- riculum and co-curriculum. Programs of study and student development help students understand and effectively engage other cultures and the globalization of life and work. The College lifts up peacemaking as a feature of global education. Experiential Learning Elizabethtown seeks to broaden the contexts for student learning by fostering educational experiences through which students learn by doing. Through this experiential learning, students develop the aptitude to link theory and experience, and they are better prepared to continue learning throughout their lifetime. These opportunities are available through internships and externships, field placement assignments, independent and collaborative research projects, service-learning and community volunteer work, leadership development and campus enjoyment. Purposeful Life Work To enable them to respond to the dynamic work environment of the 21st century, our students are prepared not only with foundational skills for career job placement, 2006-2007 College Catalog 3 Elizabethtown College but also for life-work changes that evolve throughout a lifetime. In both the cur- riculum and co-curriculum, the College’s educational program fosters an under- standing of education for a life of purpose based on a holistic model of student development that integrates career development; reflection on vocation, meaning and life; and a commitment to civic engagement. As a result, graduates of Elizabethtown College are prepared to make the world a better place. They do so, in part, by living in ways that reflect their individual com- mitments, respond to the needs of others, and value personal and ethical integrity. History Elizabethtown College was established by representatives of the Church of the Brethren on September 23, 1899. As outlined in our charter, the purpose of the College was “to give such harmonious development to the physical, mental and moral powers of both sexes as will best fit them for the duties of life.” On November 13, 1900, classes began for six students in the Heisey Building, located in downtown Elizabethtown. Tuition was one dollar per week per course. During the early years, the institution operated as an academy, offering a limited curriculum. In 1921, the Pennsylvania Department of Public Instruction accredited the College and authorized it to grant bachelor’s degrees in the arts and sciences. In May 1948, Elizabethtown was accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Elizabethtown Today Since the late 1940s, Elizabethtown has grown significantly – in our student and faculty population, in our academic and co-curricular offerings, and in the number and quality of our facilities. Currently, about 1,900 students are enrolled full-time at the College, the most in our history. These young men and women come from more than two-thirds of the states in this country and more than 40 nations. Educating these students are 130 full-time faculty members whose qualifications, achievements and dedication are to be.

    History 1014 (12) McMahon Fall 2018 Hubbard Hall 11 TTh 8:30-9:55 am [email protected] Sills 209 Utopia: Intentional Communities in America, 1630-1997 This first-year seminar examines the evolution of utopian visions and utopian experiments in American history. It begins with John Winthrop’s 1630 vision of a “City upon a Hill,” explores the proliferation of both religious and secular communal ventures between 1780 and 1920, and concludes with an examination of 20th-century counter-culture communes, intentional communities, and dystopian separatists. Primary source readings include official statements of vision and purpose by a variety of charismatic leaders; personal accounts by members, both loyal and apostate; descriptions and evaluations by “informed” contemporaries; and utopian fiction. We will read scholarly analyses by historians to help us locate those documentary readings in their historical contexts. In combination, the readings, class discussions, and essay assignments introduce students to the sources and methods of historical inquiry and critical analysis, and provide opportunities for students to strengthen their writing skills. Course Requirements. The seminar consists of two class meetings each week. The reading assignments for each class should be completed by that class meeting. The History 1014 (12) Reading Guide on Blackboard provides questions to help focus your reading for the class discussions. The further readings (listed in the reading guide) are not required. Most of the reading assignments come from the essay collection and monographs assigned for the course. The rest of the assignments (journal articles and primary documents) are available either through e-reserve (use the Library Reserves link on Blackboard or the e-reserves link on the Reading Guide) or by link to an online source or Library database through the Reading Guide.

All these groups, whether native- or foreign-born, wanted afterall to “do their own thing,” and not “to fit in.” The fundamental choice was and continues to be between the degree of individualism and communalism to achieve “the good life.” Individualism versus Communalism As social creatures, humans form many kinds of communities to meet their complex needs and desires. Starting with the Industrial Revolution in Europe and particularly since World War II in the United States, individuals and families have become members of many different kinds of communities. For example, individuals might belong and be active in a local Lutheran Church and the Green Party, bowl with co-workers, participate in block parties with immediate neighbors, be active in the PTA at their children’s school, and be part of numerous blogs, or virtual communities. In contrast, all the individuals and families in intentional societies belong to the same community with its many forms (Figure 2-1). All members of a Shaker village, for example, shared everything with the other members of the community, following a strict and standard set of beliefs and behaviors in religion, education, work, politics, and social America was the only country that started with perfection and aspired to activities in similar outdoor and indoor physical settings. Theirs was a society of authoritarian socialism, lived beneath the Canal Zone’s official motto: “The Land Divided, The World United.” Close-knit, but wary of outsiders, they called themselves “Zonians.” Upon returning to the United States en masse between 1978 and 1999, they experienced overwhelming nostalgia for the Canal Zone, declaring it a “utopia.” Using Thomas More’s Utopia as a gestalt for the utopian experience, this study compares the features of More’s Utopia with the Panama Canal Zone. In particular, it examines the utopian gesture of dividing from the old to connect to the new, arguing that the image-schematic metaphor of dividing in order to connect is constitutive of Zonian culture at multiple semiotic levels, from the physical transformation of the earth, to the social construction of group identity to everyday practices involving intercultural relations. The author’s fieldwork within the Zonian community in the USA is intertwined with findings from cognitive linguistics and semiotics in order to interpret Zonian language and culture today, exploring the idea of dividing as connecting, from the way that division and connection formed the primary meaning of the Canal, to how these seemingly opposite forces are perpetually reinterpreted by one another until they are fused into a single construct.
