The approach ofthe 200th anniversary of our country bringsan added awareness of our heiitage and a greater appreciation ofour historic past. The Bicentennial Edition of DiscoveringHistoric .lowa should be invaluable to teachers of Iowahistory, librarians, students, historical groups, and othereducational and lay organizations, as well as tourists, for informationabout the Hawkeye State. By requiring that the history of Iowabe taught in our schools,thepeopleofthis -statehave recognized the irtiportance of Iowa's heritage. Ttilsserves to instill in our young people the perspective needed to properlyunderstand local, regional, state, and national histo,ryand show how these are interrelated. Some of the information included was originally obt ined 6y the author in 1968 from questionnaires completed and returned by historical societies, museums, conservation boards, chambers of commerce, and other organizations and included in the publication, A Guide to Historic Iowa. The information contained in the earlier publications has been rechecked and verified by correspondence, telephone calls, and personal visits. The cover design, line drawings, and art workappearing throughout the book are by various artists, including Eloise Anderson, Frances Lenan Dean, Monte Hammond, Richard Lewis, Jeff Lockwood, Dennis Schrage, andWilliaM J. Wagner.
