The Histories, Volume 4, Number 2 36 II Land and Freedom: An Accurate Glimpse of Spain’s Civil War Reviewed by Matthew E. Kowalski In most American history texts, the Spanish Civil War is often viewed as simply a ‘dress-rehearsal’ for the Second World War. As a consequence, the prevailing image of the conflict is that of a straightforward contest between the forces of fascism and democracy. This gross oversimplification of one of the 20th century’s most important conflicts, fails to take into account the considerable diversity of political thought within both the Nationalist and Republican camps. British director Ken Loach’s 1996 film Land and Freedom, attempts to overcome this common oversight. By focusing his attention on the internal conflict that developed between independent socialists and the Stalinist controlled Spanish Communist Party, Loach provides a more complete picture of events of 1936-39. -

Drawing on art- house movies like Cinema Paradiso and Hollywood blockbusters such as The Matrix, Christopher Falzon introduces and discusses central areas of philosophical concern, including: • the theory of knowledge • the self and personal identity • ethics • social and political philosophy • science and technology • critical thinking. Falzon draws from the ideas of a diverse selection of thinkers, from Plato and Descartes to Marcuse and Foucault. Ideal for the beginner, this book guides the student through philosophy using lively and illuminating cinematic examples including Total Recall, Crimes and Misdemeanors, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Antz and Wings of Desire. It will also appeal to anyone interested in the philosophical dimensions of cinema. Christopher Falzon is Lecturer in Philosophy at Newcastle University, Australia. He is the author of Foucault and Social Dialogue (Routledge, 1998). -

« Land and Freedom le passé imparfait par Gérald Collas * Comment parler d'un film comme Land and freedom aujourd'hui ? D'abord écouter son réalisateur, Ken Loach, lorsqu'il énonce les raisons qui l'ont conduit à faire ce film : « J'ai voulu raconter l'histoire d'une révolution trahie. Expliquer comment, à chaque tentative de changement, la gauche gâchait tout espoir. Témoigner d'une lutte de pouvoir - ici entre anarchistes, trotskistes et commu nistes. Montrer que la révolution populaire a échoué par la faute du P.C. et de la politique de Staline (...) Mon message est simple : le socialisme n'a pas échoué, il reste à faire. Aujourd'hui que le bloc communiste s'est ef fondré, cette leçon est précieuse » il. Intentions du réalisateur et réactions de la critique dé limitent l'espace dans lequel va s'inscrire le film - ad hésion ou rejet espace qui va largement surdéterminer les lectures qu'en feront à chaque fois ses spectateurs. Cet espace - d'emblée - est un espace trop plein, un es pace dans lequel il n'y a plus de jeu possible en ce sens qu'il invite le spectateur à une lecture programmée, à une lecture qui est décodage d'un message dont la sim plicité est le meilleur garant de sa fluidité. A lire l'abondante critique suscitée par le film lors de sa sortie en salles ou à l'occasion de sa présentation dans le cadre du Festival de Cannes, une première réflexion s'impose : une fois encore, ce qui prend le dessus c'est le débat autour de la question historique qui sert de ré- 55 férence et non la critique du film lui-même, du récit au tour duquel il s'ordonne et du sens que celui-ci produit pour le spectateur. -

These directors are significant in the history of cinema because of the themes they developed in their movies as well as the novelties they brought to the form. Angelopulos, Eisenstein, Bergman, Bunuel, Ceylan, Fassbinder, Ford, Godard, Kurosawa, Loach, Ray and Visconti: all of them produced masterpieces of the film history and their production may be defined as turning points in the evolution of cinema as an artistic realm. We think that their works can be analyzed and identified from many perspectives as they are most relevant to define the main purposes of film as art. Native place-making and universal, developed and underdeveloped, East and West, conventional and avant-garde, national and international, all of these dualities profoundly elaborated in human and social sciences will also be important for us to think about and discuss leading work of arts of these authors.
