Steverson 2017 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT In this project, I examine what disability scholars such as Ellen Samuels, Nirmala Erevelles, and Cynthia Wu label as the “constitutive relationship” between race and disability, meaning that race informs disability in the same way that disability informs race. The relationship between the two categories of difference is interconnected, yet seldom does black literary studies engage a disability studies praxis and rarely does disability studies engage with African American literature. I formulate a theory of reading race and disability as it pertains to the fiction, authors, and the larger African American and disability communities and strive to reconcile the overlooked, yet imperative, relationship between the two categories of difference. By using a Black Critical Disabilities Studies Approach, as I label it, my project breaks down the ways in which African American authors and scholars use disability as a metaphor for race, usually carrying a negative connotation. Not only do I engage the rhetorical strategies of disability in African American literature and scholarship, but I also employ a historical materialist lens to explore how, through the brutal system of slavery, the black body becomes the epitome of the disabled figure. In Iola Leroy, or, Shadows Uplifted (1892), Iola Leroy’s uncle, Robert, explains to Harry, Iola’s brother, that disabilities surround colored people. In Invisible Man (1952), Brother Tarp, who works with the narrator, has a lame leg which is thought to be the result of Rheumatism. In Appalachee Red (1978), protagonist Little Bit Thompson goes insane after she refuses to believe her husband has been killed by the Ku Klux Klan. In Push (1996), the main character, Precious, is raped by her father and gives birth to a child with Down Syndrome. After years of what I thought were simply small, unrelated, instances of human difference, through taking courses, research, and teaching, I slowly began to realize that a disability presence is everywhere in African American literature. But how could I, along with other scholars of African American literature, miss something that seems so pervasive to me now? How has black literary studies, which is rather inclusive in thinking about identity politics, including issues of race, gender, nation, class, religion, and so on, been eliding disability? This project is an investigation into the undiscussed but lurking presence of disability in African American literature. By engaging both a disability studies praxis and a black literary studies analysis, I explore the ways in which race and disability inform each other in African American literature. The relationship between the two categories of difference is interconnected, yet in both black literary studies and disability studies there is a dearth of 1 research exploring this relationship. Seldom does black literary studies engage a disability studies praxis and somewhat less does disability studies engage with African American literature. Nonetheless, as I argue, the two disciplines have much to offer each other. Until more recently, there has been a disconnect between issues of race and ethnicity and disability studies. In his 2006 scathing critique of disability studies, Chris Bell argues in “Introducing White Disability Studies: A Modest Proposal,” that disability studies thus far has whitewashed “disability history, ontology and phenomenology” (Bell 275). He posits that White Disability Studies (as he names it) has largely excluded people of color and instead focuses on the work of white individuals and is produced mostly by white authors, scholars, and activists (275). He ascertains how a discipline that wishes to fight ableism marginalizes the voices of people of color within the movement. By critiquing such well-known disability studies scholars such as Simi Linton and Lennard Davis, Bell insists that because of White Disability Studies’ focus on whiteness, readers of their works, and in general works of many disability scholars, receive a distorted view of disability studies. In response to Bell’s call for inclusivity in terms of intersecting identities in disability studies, many scholars have begun to engage in a more intersectional approach to disability studies. Although I am not the first person to insist upon a merge between black literary studies and disability studies, few disability scholars and even fewer literature scholars have made explicit the relationship between race and disability in literature. Rosemarie Garland-Thomson’s Extraordinary Bodies: Figuring Physical Disability in American Culture and Literature (1997) offers one of the first inclusive studies of engaging disability and fiction. She investigates how the cultural self and the cultural other operate in tandem to produce and sustain a social hierarchy 2 that simultaneously values certain bodies while devaluing others. She coins the term, normate, which names the veiled subject position of cultural self, the figure outlined by the array of deviant others whose marked bodies shore up the normate’s boundaries. The term normate usefully designates the social figure through which people can represent themselves as definitive human beings. Normate, then, is the constructed identity of those who, by way of the bodily configurations and cultural capital they assume, can step into a position of authority

As I argue, African American narratives in the last quarter of the nineteenth century encode the discourse of class in discussions of respectability, labor, and discrimination. Neither of the two key elements of the domestic novel, marriage and home, is given to the heroine of Our Nig. The “true womanhood” with its emphasis on piety, purity, obedience, and domesticity1 is either unavailable to, or unable to support, a black woman in a patriarchal racist society based on slavery rules. The problem, then, focuses on the way how the heroine establishes herself in such a hostile society. One of the cheif themes of the story, in fact, lies in Frado’s struggle to acquire independence. According to Harryette Mullen, nineteenth- century black women writers strived to incorporate “an oral tradition of resistance” into their literature, since the two traditional literary forms available to them, the male slave narrative and the white female sentimental fiction, are inadequate to express their experience (245). They assert oral power of black women to resist the oppressors and to insist upon their selfhood, while male writers of slave narratives underscore the physical power to attain manhood as Douglass does in the scene of his fight with Mr. Covey. When submission and self-effacement were endorsed as female virtues, black women resorted to “orality”—talking back, arguing, or revealing secrets of their masters, all of which were regarded as “saucy” or “impudent” by the ruling class—to surface their voice and thereby to establish their identity (Mullen 245-46)2.     Elián, Iola Leroy, and Other Reluctant Citizens R USS C ASTRONOVO University of Miami CITIZENSHIP, IT WOULD SEEM, OPERATES VIA FORMAL STRICTURES OFEXCLU- sion and inclusion that tally with the well-defined geopolitical borders of the nation-state.1 Persons born on U.S. soil, for instance, fall under the purview of jus soli and thereby are entitled to the privileges and immunities of citi- zenship—although blacks in the era of the Dred Scott decision that exempted Africans and their descendants from political membership could have supplied a far different history.2 Despite the comprehensiveness of juridical maps of citizenship, the hyphenated space between nation and state marks a zone of uncertainty, a crack in the official logic of citizenship that unveils citizens as subjects who entertain competing loyalties and cher- ish conflicting memories. Many people travel pathways of nations that do not line up with states, moving through spaces and histories that are dis- placed by diaspora and crisscrossed by psychological, cultural, and political territories not administered by the state or its institutions. The protections of formal personhood refuse such complex maps of identity, preferring the creation of citizenship as a calculable, generic, and ultimately depoliticized terrain. In this manner, citizenship dominates both ● 23 24 ● E lián, Iola Leroy, and Other Reluctant Citizens the political horizon and foreground: at one moment, it appears as the height of politics and thus beyond the realm of the political and, at the next, it provides the fundamental ground of political identity and thus seems prior to all political processes. This essay explores and connects two figures who drift between nation and state as a means of interrogating this politi- cal category whose foundational status frequently guarantees it a “natural” identity that is immune to critique.

    Beyond the Negro Problem: The Engagement between Literature and Sociology in the Age of the New Negro Erica Richardson Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2018 © 2018 Erica Richardson All rights reserved ABSTRACT Beyond the Negro Problem: The Engagement between Literature and Sociology in the Age of the New Negro Erica Richardson In Beyond the Negro Problem, I explore the engagement between black literature, black expressive culture, and sociology from the 1890s to the 1930s in order to consider the possibilities for imagining black social life that emerge through discoursive innovation during a time period of violent constraint. During this period, which followed Emancipation and the failure of Reconstruction, the struggle for black life or assimilation into American society was consolidated, examined, and contemplated as the so-called Negro problem. The Negro problem was a pervasive reality and metaphor that both black authors and social scientists grappled with. I argue that black leaders and intellectuals use different forms of sociology in their writing to respond directly to narratives of black social pathology and to imagine black life beyond the status of being a problem. In each chapter I explore a different engagement of sociology and literary production and each time find that the formations of black possibility that emerge are predicated on issues of gender and sexuality because the predominating foreclosing narratives about black social life tend to gravitate toward these same issues. Moreover, the racial knowledge about African American culture produced by sociology at the onset of modernity is acutely gendered.

Levine, English My study examines four African American-authored narratives written between 1793 and 1901 (Richard Allen and Absalom Jones’ Narratives of the Proceedings of the Black People, Harriet Jacobs’s Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Elizabeth Keckley’s Behind the Scenes, and Charles Chesnutt’s The Marrow of Tradition) that depict acts of benevolence by African Americans to white recipients. This work focuses on the power relations represented by acts of benevolence, social perceptions regarding the roles of benefactor and recipient, and authorial choices in the depiction of these acts. The study highlights how these four narratives complicate representations of benevolence, both in terms of race and of the historical contexts in which they were written. Previous scholars have documented the emergence of what they identify as a genre of benevolence texts within nineteenth-century American literature and even identified several subgenres among these texts (including poorhouse stories, seamstress novels, panic fiction, settlement house narratives, and maternal literacy management narratives). My work contributes to this critical literature by identifying what I call counternarratives of benevolence depicting interactions between black benefactors and white recipients, thereby expanding the scholarly discourse surrounding
