Aaron, you and Ben are truly my greatest accomplishments. v ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Reading the (In)visible Race: African-American Subject Representation and Formation in American Literature by Lauren Colleen Hollingsworth Doctor of Philosophy, Graduate Program in English University of California, Riverside, March 2010 Dr. Jennifer Doyle, Chairperson This project began with the intention to examine the connection between the aesthetic and the political in American literature’s construction of African-American subjectivity, or the relationship between resistance and representation in literary portrayals of the African-American subject. I was specifically interested in the moments in American literature where the convergence between aesthetic form and political practice creates a particular crisis in representation for African-American subjectivity, many times rendering scholarly discussion of these problematic texts dismissive of their purported politics, or even non-existent. Some of the questions I wanted to grapple with included how one accounts for texts that have “good politics” in mind when written, yet vi still possess racist or “bad political” aspects through the manner in which they are presented, and the manner in which the subject position of the author affects our perception of the text. I chose to discuss American fictional texts whose readers and critics have experienced difficulty reconciling the text’s aesthetic properties with the political moves they seemed to be making in their representation of African-American subjectivity. Through close analysis of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Harriet Jacobs’s Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl , Frances Harper’s abolitionist and post-Civil War poetry, and her novel Iola Leroy , Mark Twain’s Puddn’head Wilson , Carl Van Vechten’s Nigger Heaven , Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God , and research of the criticism surrounding these texts, I found that we should not necessarily reject the notion that aesthetic representation always implies a political stance. However, if ideology and form are so closely connected, than closely examining the aesthetics of a text becomes crucial to understanding its political repercussions and the cultural work it is performing. Ultimately, I end with a plea that we acknowledge the complexity of resistance for the African-American subject and expand the ways in which we as readers and critics tend to define it. The more specific goal involves the examination of and emphasis on the complexity of the convergence of the aesthetic properties of literature with the inherent political gesture that seems to be involved in representing an African-American individual within a literary text. This relationship between aesthetics and politics in general, has always been a complicated one. Marxist criticism has discussed the relationship between art and ideology in great detail, most notably in the examination of realism. Bertolt Brecht rails against the “formalistic nature of realism,” stating that “One must not construct the concept of formalism in purely aesthetic terms.” 1 For Brecht, literary works in general cannot be separated from their “social functions.” Thus, all literary form (even as Brecht terms it, “works which do not elevate literary form over social content and yet do not correspond to reality” 2) is inherently connected to ideology. Theodor Adorno complicates Brecht’s theory by claiming that “Style, form, and technique … are the features that distinguish art as knowledge from science … works of art which ignored their own form, would destroy themselves as art.” 3 Adorno further claims that art does not become knowledge or “social truth” by directly mirroring reality, but instead “reveal[s] whatever is veiled by the empirical form assumed by reality, and this is 1 Bertolt Brecht, “Against Georg Lukacs,” Aesthetics and Politics: The Key Texts of the Classic Debate within German Marxism (London: Verso, 1977), 71. 2 Brecht,“Against Georg Lukacs,” Aesthetics and Politics , 72. WILLIAMS: Our Kind of People: Social Status and Class Awareness in Post -Reconstruction African American Fiction (Under the dir ection of William L. Andrews) Postbellum African American fiction provides an index to the complex attitudes toward social status and class divisions that arose within post -Civil War black communities. As I argue, African American narratives in the last quarter of the nineteenth century encode the discourse of class in discussions of respectability, labor, and discrimination. Conceiving of class as a concept that does not necessarily denote economic conditions, both well -known and largely ignored narrativ es of the period emphasize moral and ideological parameters for judging social distinctions. Writers theorize whether intraracial class stratification thwarts black sociopolitical advancement, fracturing black communities from within, or conversely, foster s racial uplift led by the black “better class.” Though the fiction variably delineates social classes, each of the texts under study in Our Kind of People imagines classification as an inevitable and useful means of reforming the turn -of-the-century Ameri can social order. Steverson 2017 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT In this project, I examine what disability scholars such as Ellen Samuels, Nirmala Erevelles, and Cynthia Wu label as the “constitutive relationship” between race and disability, meaning that race informs disability in the same way that disability informs race. The relationship between the two categories of difference is interconnected, yet seldom does black literary studies engage a disability studies praxis and rarely does disability studies engage with African American literature. I formulate a theory of reading race and disability as it pertains to the fiction, authors, and the larger African American and disability communities and strive to reconcile the overlooked, yet imperative, relationship between the two categories of difference. By using a Black Critical Disabilities Studies Approach, as I label it, my project breaks down the ways in which African American authors and scholars use disability as a metaphor for race, usually carrying a negative connotation. Not only do I engage the rhetorical strategies of disability in African American literature and scholarship, but I also employ a historical materialist lens to explore how, through the brutal system of slavery, the black body becomes the epitome of the disabled figure.

    THE YALE LAW JOURNAL FORUM JANUARY 20, 2020 The Nineteenth Amendment and the Democratization of the Family Reva B. Siegel abstract. This Essay recovers debates over the family connecting the Reconstruction Amendments and the Nineteenth Amendment, and considers how this lost history can guide the Constitution’s interpretation, in courts and in politics. A woman’s claim to vote contested a man’s prerogative to represent his wife and daughters, and so was a claim for democratization of the family. Suffragists argued that women needed the vote to change the ways that law structuring the family governed their lives. They argued that law should recognize women’s right to voluntary motherhood and to be remunerated equally with men for work performed inside and outside the household. Suffragists sought to create a world in which adult members of the household could be recognized and participate in democratic life as equals. And they debated how to realize these goals when women faced different and intersectional forms of discrimination. Claims for democratic reconstruction of the family that began in the quest for 450 the nineteenth amendment and the democratization of the family the vote continued in the immediate aftermath of the Nineteenth Amendment’s ratification and in 1970 during its half-century anniversary, and continue today in the era of its centennial. Courts can draw on this history and interpret the Amendments synthetically. For example, judges can integrate the history of suffrage struggle into the equal-protection framework of United States v. Virginia. The Essay shows how an historical and intersectional understanding of suffrage struggle could change the way courts approach cases concerning the regulation of pregnancy, con- traception, sexual violence, and federalism.

Neither of the two key elements of the domestic novel, marriage and home, is given to the heroine of Our Nig. The “true womanhood” with its emphasis on piety, purity, obedience, and domesticity1 is either unavailable to, or unable to support, a black woman in a patriarchal racist society based on slavery rules. The problem, then, focuses on the way how the heroine establishes herself in such a hostile society. One of the cheif themes of the story, in fact, lies in Frado’s struggle to acquire independence. According to Harryette Mullen, nineteenth- century black women writers strived to incorporate “an oral tradition of resistance” into their literature, since the two traditional literary forms available to them, the male slave narrative and the white female sentimental fiction, are inadequate to express their experience (245). They assert oral power of black women to resist the oppressors and to insist upon their selfhood, while male writers of slave narratives underscore the physical power to attain manhood as Douglass does in the scene of his fight with Mr. Covey. When submission and self-effacement were endorsed as female virtues, black women resorted to “orality”—talking back, arguing, or revealing secrets of their masters, all of which were regarded as “saucy” or “impudent” by the ruling class—to surface their voice and thereby to establish their identity (Mullen 245-46)2. Among the most meaningful comments were friends and family realizing what it is we do at the Clayman Institute: “So, that’s what gender research is,” they said. Gender research, and perhaps all research from the academy, can seem out of Lori Nishiura Mackenzie touch with what happens in our everyday lives. Yet what I have learned from my years at the Institute, is that within these studies lie answers to many of the issues, questions, and confounding occurrences that act as hurdles in our day-to-day lives. What we continue to discover in research are solutions and fresh ideas for the new millennium. One of the most important goals of our program at the Clayman Institute is to translate research. By making studies accessible and highlighting gender analysis, more people benefit from the thought-provoking insights produced at this institution. Within these pages we attempt to present ideas that can lead to a more equal society. upRising offers the very best of those ideas.
