ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION A PUBLIC DUTY: MEDICINE AND COMMERCE IN NINETEENTH-CENTURY AMERICAN LITERATURE AND CULTURE Using recent criticism on speculation and disability in addition to archival materials, “A Public Duty: Medicine and Commerce in Nineteenth-Century American Literature and Culture” demonstrates that reform-minded nineteenth-century authors drew upon the representational power of public health to express excitement and anxiety about the United States’ emerging economic and political prominence. Breaking with a critical tradition holding that the professionalization of medicine and authorship served primarily to support and define an ascending middle class, I argue that the authors such as Robert Montgomery Bird, Fanny Fern, George Washington Cable, and Pauline Hopkins fuse the rhetoric of economic policy and public health to advocate that the era’s disenfranchised “ill” (classified as such due to demographic factors or disability/disease) be recognized as worthy citizens capable of enhancing the economic and cultural wealth of the nation. While many nineteenth-century authors drew upon the ability for sickness and death to unify disparate peoples, such instances often tend toward sentimentalism, imparting the message of inclusion by invoking readers’ sympathy. The authors included in my project, however, do not fit this mode. Instead, they used their works to insinuate that looking after the health and welfare of one’s fellow humans was simply good economics. In featuring issues of public health rather than private disability, depicting illness realistically in accordance with medical treatises and beliefs of the period, and showing the widespread consequences of disease these writers rely on their readers’ desire for economic prosperity, rather than affect, as a catalyst for social solidarity in a capitalist society. As such, my project causes us to rethink how the ascent of the novel not only helped define, but also challenged and critiqued, the identity-politics of an emerging middle class. By showing the authors studied in “A Public Duty” used literature’s pedagogical potential to argue the “sick” literally and figuratively had worth, I demonstrates these writers’ works help create and support a reconceptualization of the political body suiting a country poised to assume global prominence and urged their readers to see the variety of people living in the United States as a source of national innovation and strength. As I argue, African American narratives in the last quarter of the nineteenth century encode the discourse of class in discussions of respectability, labor, and discrimination. Conceiving of class as a concept that does not necessarily denote economic conditions, both well -known and largely ignored narrativ es of the period emphasize moral and ideological parameters for judging social distinctions. Steverson 2017 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT In this project, I examine what disability scholars such as Ellen Samuels, Nirmala Erevelles, and Cynthia Wu label as the “constitutive relationship” between race and disability, meaning that race informs disability in the same way that disability informs race. The relationship between the two categories of difference is interconnected, yet seldom does black literary studies engage a disability studies praxis and rarely does disability studies engage with African American literature. I formulate a theory of reading race and disability as it pertains to the fiction, authors, and the larger African American and disability communities and strive to reconcile the overlooked, yet imperative, relationship between the two categories of difference. By using a Black Critical Disabilities Studies Approach, as I label it, my project breaks down the ways in which African American authors and scholars use disability as a metaphor for race, usually carrying a negative connotation. Not only do I engage the rhetorical strategies of disability in African American literature and scholarship, but I also employ a historical materialist lens to explore how, through the brutal system of slavery, the black body becomes the epitome of the disabled figure.

Neither of the two key elements of the domestic novel, marriage and home, is given to the heroine of Our Nig. The “true womanhood” with its emphasis on piety, purity, obedience, and domesticity1 is either unavailable to, or unable to support, a black woman in a patriarchal racist society based on slavery rules. The problem, then, focuses on the way how the heroine establishes herself in such a hostile society. One of the cheif themes of the story, in fact, lies in Frado’s struggle to acquire independence. According to Harryette Mullen, nineteenth- century black women writers strived to incorporate “an oral tradition of resistance” into their literature, since the two traditional literary forms available to them, the male slave narrative and the white female sentimental fiction, are inadequate to express their experience (245). They assert oral power of black women to resist the oppressors and to insist upon their selfhood, while male writers of slave narratives underscore the physical power to attain manhood as Douglass does in the scene of his fight with Mr. Covey. When submission and self-effacement were endorsed as female virtues, black women resorted to “orality”—talking back, arguing, or revealing secrets of their masters, all of which were regarded as “saucy” or “impudent” by the ruling class—to surface their voice and thereby to establish their identity (Mullen 245-46)2.     Over 200 years of the Fowler Family: The Fowlers, Eddys, Gridleys, Parrishes, etcetera This document is part of the story about the Fowler family of Gratiot and Isabella Counties in central Michigan and their roots in America. Another portion of the story involves the ancestors of Nellie Pearl Brooks (1873-1960), wife of Anson James Fowler and daughter of Elisha Hall Brooks (1818-1891) and Laura Jane Bartlett Brooks (1830-1908). You will also find other materials there, such as descendent charts. This story is about the Fowler family of Gratiot and Isabella Counties of central Michigan. It began with the “innocent” question, asked in 2005: “Who was the first Fowler of our line in North America?” Family lore passed down to us states that “Fowler brothers” escaped England for the New World for political reasons. This sounds a lot like the genealogical “fairy tale” which many families have in their oral histories: the quintessential “three brothers” story. In truth, many of those stories are true, as people tended to come to America in groups -- and many in family groups. So far, however, we have not been able to corroborate this in our case, mostly because we do not yet know who our Fowler immigrant-ancestor was! A family story that a Fowler initially was part of the Wells-Fargo stagecoach line has largely been disproved 1, as has the story’s variation that one of the Fowler brothers changed his name to Fargo and was the multiple-great-grandfather of the founder of the stagecoach line.

    Elián, Iola Leroy, and Other Reluctant Citizens R USS C ASTRONOVO University of Miami CITIZENSHIP, IT WOULD SEEM, OPERATES VIA FORMAL STRICTURES OFEXCLU- sion and inclusion that tally with the well-defined geopolitical borders of the nation-state.1 Persons born on U.S. soil, for instance, fall under the purview of jus soli and thereby are entitled to the privileges and immunities of citi- zenship—although blacks in the era of the Dred Scott decision that exempted Africans and their descendants from political membership could have supplied a far different history.2 Despite the comprehensiveness of juridical maps of citizenship, the hyphenated space between nation and state marks a zone of uncertainty, a crack in the official logic of citizenship that unveils citizens as subjects who entertain competing loyalties and cher- ish conflicting memories. Many people travel pathways of nations that do not line up with states, moving through spaces and histories that are dis- placed by diaspora and crisscrossed by psychological, cultural, and political territories not administered by the state or its institutions. The protections of formal personhood refuse such complex maps of identity, preferring the creation of citizenship as a calculable, generic, and ultimately depoliticized terrain. In this manner, citizenship dominates both ● 23 24 ● E lián, Iola Leroy, and Other Reluctant Citizens the political horizon and foreground: at one moment, it appears as the height of politics and thus beyond the realm of the political and, at the next, it provides the fundamental ground of political identity and thus seems prior to all political processes. This essay explores and connects two figures who drift between nation and state as a means of interrogating this politi- cal category whose foundational status frequently guarantees it a “natural” identity that is immune to critique.

    Corporate Heads: Phrenology, Physiognomy, and the Character of Big Business, 1895-1914 Coleman Sherry Undergraduate Senior Thesis Department of History Columbia University 29 March 2021 Seminar Advisor: Professor Samuel Roberts Second Reader: Professor Richard John Abstract In this thesis I argue that practical phrenology—a loose set of practices for reading character in heads, faces, and bodies—played an important and underappreciated role in the popular coverage of the large new corporations that emerged from the “Great Merger Movement” around the turn of the twentieth century. I suggest that the scope and pace of the transition from proprietor to corporate ownership created a crisis of economic representation, defined by a lack of stable, mature conventions for describing and illustrating the actual activities of the new consolidated firms. In this context, journalists and cartoonists borrowed from the wildly-popular practical phrenology and personalized the corporations, describing the firms as if they were the straightforward extensions of famous individual owners. Through a close, comparative reading of biographical profiles published in Fowler and Wells’ Phrenological Journal, McClure’s Magazine, and the muckraking cartoons of Puck, I document the trespass of phrenological methods, language, and assumptions into popular contexts and publications. This phrenological personalization allowed public commentators to publish powerful polemics focused on the character of the new firms, but obscured and distorted their true forms. Table
