  • Mudfish (Neochanna Galaxiidae) Literature Review
1 0 . 2 C omp E tition and pr E dation Analysis of NZFFD records indicates that Neochanna species occurred in habitats without any other fish species on more than half of the occasions they were recorded (Table 10). Although a wide variety of other fish species may sometimes co-occur with Neochanna species, the incidence of co-occurrence is typically low except for one or two species. It is thought that Neochanna species are generally intolerant of competition because of their small size, general lack of aggression, small mouth and low metabolic rate, all of which may reduce their potential to be dominant competitors (Meredith 1985). While Neochanna are not inherently territorial or aggressive towards con-specifics, Barrier & Hicks (1994) reported that adult N. diversus were aggressive towards G. affinis, and Eldon (1969) found N. apoda were aggressive when outnumbered, or in the presence of a multitude of species in aquaria (Eldon 1969). It has also been suggested (Meredith 1985) that Neochanna species may lack predator-avoidance mechanisms. However, when disturbed suddenly, N. cleaveri can jump to a height of 50–60 mm above the water before immediately diving down to the pool bottom. Fish may repeat this manoeuvre two or three times in quick succession and it is likely used to facilitate their escape from aquatic predators (Andrews 1991). Juvenile N. burrowsius exhibit a similar behaviour when startled, although not jumping as high (L. O’Brien, pers. obs.). The following sections provide further information on commonly occurring inter-specific interactions. 10.2.1 Anguilla species Eels (Anguillidae; Anguilla) prey on Neochanna, including larger (120 mm) individuals (Mitchell 1995; Eldon 1978b, 1979a), and there is a surprisingly low level of co-occurrence between Neochanna species and eels, considering the ubiquitous distribution of Anguilla species (Table 10).

  • Community and Social Recovery Needs and Capacities in Ashburton District in Covid-19 Times
Community and Social Recovery Needs and Capacities in Ashburton District in Covid-19 Times Prepared for Safer Mid Canterbury and Ashburton District’s Caring for Communities Welfare Recovery Group By Sarah Wylie MA (hons.) [email protected] September 2020 Research made possible with generous support from EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Background The “Caring for Communities Welfare Recovery Group”, through Safer Mid Canterbury commissioned research which could underpin a planned response model to support the community and social sector through Covid-19 and beyond. The present research was undertaken by Sarah Wylie, a social and community researcher and evaluator. Methodology The research employed a predominantly qualitative methodology, comprising a brief literature review, review of relevant demographic data, electronic surveys of service providers, community organisations and health and wellbeing services, schools, funders and members of a Pasifika Facebook group for the district, and 106 community experts - social, community and health and wellbeing-focused providers and a sample of schools across the district, along with groups well-equipped to provide commentary of the economic situation in Ashburton took part in 36 in-depth, semi-structured interviews and focus groups (32 face- to-face and 4 undertaken by phone). Data was collected through late July and August 2020. Findings Ashburton district is a community of relative affluence, with historically low unemployment and an economy with a strong agricultural base, which in the current environment means a high proportion of workers and businesses are classed as essential. While Covid-19 has impacted some businesses in the community, and especially hospitality and tourism businesses centred in Methven, and retail in Ashburton, the impact has been, and is expected to continue to be less strong than in many other parts of the country.

State of the Canterbury Region Water Resource, October 2003 Report No. U03/80 Prepared by Philippa Aitchison-Earl, Mandy Chater, Michael Dicker, Marc Ettema, Russel Sanders, David Scott, Esther Smith, John Weeber October 2003 Report No. U03/80 58 Kilmore Street 75 Church Street P O Box 345 P O Box 550 CHRISTCHURCH TIMARU Phone: (03) 365 3828 Phone: (03) 688 9069 Fax: (03) 365 3194 Fax: (03) 688 9067 Website: www.ecan.govt.nz Customer Services Phone 0800 324 636 State of the Canterbury region water resource, October 2002 Executive summary The state of Canterbury’s water resources in October 2003 before the 2003/04 summer is reviewed. Rainfall over the winter was below average in all parts of the region. However, a dramatic change to well above average rainfall in September served to replenish soil moisture, river flows and groundwater levels. The greatest rainfall anomalies were in North Canterbury, and about the Hunter Hills in South Canterbury. Consequently the highest river flows are now to be found in these areas. For the very southern part of the region, south of the Hunter Hills, September rainfall was not exceptionally high. This, coupled with the accumulated effects of below average rainfall in this part of the region over the nine months prior to September, has resulted in river flows remaining slightly below average in this area. Groundwater levels in shallow aquifers are generally average to above average, owing to recharge from recent rainfall and river flow. Groundwater levels in deeper aquifers are currently low to average, and in the West Melton/Yaldhurst area levels have been low for much of 2003, in response to the continuing effects of low winter recharge.
