At a recent annual conference a fellow exhibitor that was passing our booth commented in a jovial tone “Wow! You’re actually a real publisher now”. In the split second following the comment, two opposite thoughts immediately passed through my mind. The first being “Great! We must have an impressive book display this year”, and the second being “Hold on! Were we not a real publisher before?!”. The exhibitor was a person I’ve enjoyed chatting with and getting to know over the years, and the comment was of course a very kind compliment. However, as I think back to that interaction the question that I ask myself is what does make a real publisher?

With there being many types of publishers – academic, popular, children’s, ministry, self-publishing – any answer to the above question could certainly be quite subjective. So rather than try and elaborate on what makes us a publisher, it is more of a question of who makes us a publisher and what guides us in what we do. Our wonderful authors, dedicated staff, committed freelancers, as well as our reviewers, endorsers and advisors help define who we are, as we seek to serve our readers, and ultimately the whole church.

As a publisher, we are guided by the awareness that Christian leaders around the world need good books. Books that are faithful to scripture, books that are relevant to the context of our readers, books that transform lives. We give a platform to the diverse voices that make up our global church and as we do, we seek to value and listen to the perspectives of others, to pray about what we do and how we do it, and to be passionate about partnering with others.

From browsing our publications you may note that a large number of our books are from authors or contributors who are not Western, or as we in Langham would say, are from the Majority World. Our emphasis here originated with our founder, John Stott, who laid the foundation for our publishing work almost two decades ago. We want to address the imbalance that most books for Christians do not speak into the context of most Christians. This is why we seek to publish books for Majority World readers. And second, we wish for biblical understanding to flow unrestricted among all believers, so that our church in the West may grow together with our church in the Majority World.

La thèse traite de la problématique de la révélation et de l’herméneutique, car par la révélation Dieu se fait connaître, et par l’herméneutique, l’homme cherche ce qui a été révélé.
