First Place Winning Poem:

Like an Unheard Song

I am like an unheard song craving to be listened to. I speak a thousand words with a million meanings. I can be a tune of acrimony and bitterness but my chorus is authentic, passionate, charming. Those yearning to hear my harmony will soon realize my complexity. Fast, uplifting, crazy is my song with a never-before-heard one-of-a-kind beat a beat to a different drum, lyrics with intense emotion that will leave an imprint in your mind. my rhythm, overflowing with creativity. If you listen to this song you will discover no ending for this unheard song is still being written

Second Place Winning Poem:

Waiting

Curly brown hair drops down my face a smile shining on my lips with my innocent sparkling eye glittering so bright my shadow dances in the moonlight.

I waited all that time. Sitting on the orange road line the taxi I waited for never came. I wanted, I wished, to yell her name.

―Come inside Sabrina‖ – a murmuring voice – I sighed once again – she’s not coming. Walking in the door with tears in my eyes frustration and pain burning my skin.

The picture of me in her arms when I was a baby – I ripped that picture in several pieces – like she tore my in several places. How can I ever call you mom? How can I ever have the joy with you, like before?

By Sabrina McIntyre Honourable Mention:

Light

Great light illuminating all around, casting shadows beyond its reach in which things are hidden that the light would not go near for the light can only go where it’s wanted

By Tristan Luyks F aceoff A Soldier's View

Lock and load as I get ready to go My team with me, leading my force to victory We're in this for freedom hopefully to one day reach history We move on, undetected in the shadows laying low

We move toward enemy territory My force is behind me all the way for better or worse I know if we make it back we will need a nurse Even though we might die, we had our time, we had our glory

I cannot tell if I will come back in a body bag, but if , then I accept my fate I'm worried that no matter how much I pray I will not live to tell or see another day I can only do what I do best and hope that it is not too late

By Brian Medeiros Amigo

By Laura Medeiros Winter War

I delve at the sword in the blood-covered snow The scene makes me aspirate I can no longer feel my pulse I feel like I am going to cry maybe just die maybe fly away from this pain There is nothing to gain so many reasons to care this war is not fair to fight this cold-blooded war I look up at the sky and ask myself why? Why do we have to watch people suffer? Why do we have to hurt our partners? Why do we have to fight this unbearable war? Why this winter war?

By Amanda De Sousa My Plea

I am not you but you will not give me a chance will not let me be me

If I were you but you know I am not you yet you will not let me be me

You meddle, interfere in my affairs as if they were yours and you were me

You are unfair, unwise foolish to think that I can be you talk and act and think like you

God made me as me He made you as you for God's sake let me be me!

By Julydelma De Ramos Life’s Way

Lived much too long all will is gone war raged and ravaged so much death so much decay sadness trickles tears fill an ocean

Live so Oh, so long a life an end filled with song yesterday has gone today is Oh, so frozen The future bleak I was Oh, so meek morning fill with dew Twilight came about where dark and light come together

By Christian Abcede His Nothing, Her Everything

For all that we’ve spent and been through together only to throw it away really, only when I was with you was everything better gullible was I, but I will not end bitter in turn, I shall not harbour animosity towards you vengeance is good for nobody even for you; you will not ruin me never will I sink that low everyday from now on is a new one sad as it may be, we won’t be together sad as it may be, I forgive you for ruining everything

The Light

His feet heavy on the cement sidewalk and his breath came in a gasp. One hand held to the wall of an old building supporting him as he walked the lone streets. The other hand was clamped to his stomach where read blood oozed through his fingers. He was dying. He knew it. His battle was over. He wondered on several things. Would he go to heaven? Was heaven even there? Did he waste his life? His life’s work was devoted to God and the church, to heaven and he didn’t even know if it was real. The pain in his stomach sharpened and the man in black robes dropped to his knees.. This is it he thought. The pain started to dull and his hand dropped from the wound on his stomach. The hand resting on the wall fell as a bright light hit him, blinding him. He fell as a bright light in the dirt of the old sidewalk, his own blood forming a puddle around him. One last gasp for air and he was gone, and so was the light. By Stephanie Dos Reis Mother Nature

Wrinkles filled with wisdom, crows feet of the past. gray hairs of life, deep green eyes of love.

She works swiftly with herbs. She lives life with a passion. She loves with all her heart. She cares with all her soul.

She is my role model. The one I want to be. She is smart, elegant, beautiful. She is everything and everywhere.

She has seen, felt, and heard what no other has. She is earth. She is rain. She is life.

By Stephanie Dos Reis Daydreaming

…At the beach, watching the sunset the sky’s light shade of orange the wind lightly blowing my hair such an inspiring view I look to my right glad to see we’re sharing this moment together forever at last… in my thoughts.

By Linda Cotrina Mystery in the Trees

I walk down the street and hear a noise I look up and it gets louder I ask what’s making that noise and just as I find it, it moves away It makes me look like a fool looking around and around to find what’s making that noise and then I say, it’s just one of God’s creatures, so I forgive you.

By Nicholas Denis Grant Unchanged

An image swimming into focus for an instant then out again forever into endless imagination… a thought forsaken and lost an idea never understood a dream of tomorrow a world unchanged.

By Tristan Luyks

Different

Silent, spoken, glistening on the wind, turning, tossing, seeking, never to find, never to grasp, but to hold. Aspirations,

forever possible, dreaming, hoping, seeking the truth with the mind’s eye. Twirling endlessly, joyfully, and always looking. for what is to be,

for what will be, and what will be done. Listening, seeing, the lines that connect us all Knowing what makes us different.

By Tristan Luyks

Mystic Road between the forest and grains lies a path trampled by hooves and dissolved by water

The fish no longer swim free the insects come to feed on plants and marrow years pass, centuries die no longer does this path lie but trees and grass fill in the cracks

By Thomas Gargula Our World

Our world seems smaller than we think. It has vast oceans and lands. Nature and humanity co-exist. But war has ravaged our lands. So much is destroyed and conquered.

This is our world, our journey towards our eternal . Many wander in search of truth. Others prowl and roam for lust. Arguments become big fights. Then fights become furious battles. But now, I know where I stand. For we live in a world that never was.

B ehaviours I Don't Understand

I don’t understand Why people don't respect where I'm from? Why we can't get along because of the colour of my skin? Why people like white chocolate instead of black chocolate?

But most of all Why people are prejudiced? Why people must judge? Why people make separate schools for us? Why there is no justice for us?

What I understand is Why the sun shines Why we must wait Why we must live this way Why we fight for our freedom.

By Tabatha Copping Away From Love

Cry a single tear for the child that is near they come to take her away giving the mother only a day

Freedom is what the child gets because she posses no threat away she is sent into the land of miserable content

The cries of the child are heard Only by the morning singing bird black turns to blue blue turns to gray dark clouds of the day

By Stephanie Dos Reis The Game

The warm metal of the blade slices against the cold surface of the ice. As the skates go back and forth you reach speeds you have never even thought of before. You feel the cool wind through the cage of your hel- met hit your face, and then makes its way through your hair and out the other side. Just as fast as you call for the pass, your team-mate slides the puck down the length of the rink. When the puck makes contact with your stick, you have just one challenge left—the goalie. You look him in the eye, a stare down of epic proportions, then the shot. Your team- mates rejoice, as your shot hits the back of the net and rolls down the mesh backing. You have just won the game.

By Beau Melo Bells Are Ringing

Bells are ringing carols are being sung lights are lit Christmas night in the city.

Excited voices are heard children waiting for Santa loved ones coming together.

The nativity scene in the church is looked at faces glow Baby Jesus is born It’s Christmas Day.

By Luis Plaza Music

Music is everywhere, Sometimes good and sometimes bad. It can liven up a party, But also anger the neighbours.

Music is everywhere, The waterfall splashing on a rock Brings a soothing sound to my ears. The happy chirping of the birds Lighten up my day.

Music is everywhere, In the fall the shuffling On the dry leaves makes a relaxing sound. The crackling ice under my feet Sounds like music in the winter.

Music is all around us, You just have to listen.

By David Oliveira. Christmas is Here

It is late, dark, and cold the house is quiet Has Santa been here? I wonder.

I’m waiting to see Will everyone hurry please? Christmas is here.

The day will be filled with laughter the day will be full of joy Grandma and grandpa will bring a toy we will be with each other God bless us as we gather together.

Can You Hear Me?

Lord, can you hear me? Can you hear me calling for you? Calling for help? For truth? Can you hear me?

I'm in school right now Can you hear me? I'm at work right now Can you hear me?

I’m on my way home Can you hear me? I'm in bed now Can you hear me?

When I don't see the guided path Can you show me? When I don't hear you Can you shout for me?

Lord...Can you hear me calling? to turn on the lights and eliminate darkness Lord...Am I following?

Harsh Words

Harsh words and violent blows hidden secrets nobody knows eyes are open, hands are fisted deep inside I’m warped and twisted so many tricks and so many lies too many whens and too many whys nobody's special, nobody’s gifted I'm just me, warped and twisted sleeping awake and choking on a dream. listening loudly to a silent scream call my mind, the numbers unlisted on my knees, alive but dead look at the invisible blood I've bled I'm not gone, my mind has drifted don't expect much, I’m warped and twisted burnt out, wasted, empty and hollow the sun died out, the ashes sifted I'm still here, warped and twisted

By Laura Dubicki Like a Chocolate Chip Cookie

I am like a chocolate chip cookie baked fresh from the oven but soft and delicate on the inside If judged by the outer crust, I look plain and ordinary but open by the inside, I’m fun, sweet, and I cause people to unleash their wild side Each chocolate chip reveals one aspect of my personality. Some are clearly visible, but others are hidden deep within the dough You have to chew your way to the ―secret chips‖ hidden by the outer layer My slippery road, like the grease on a cookie, leads me towards my chosen path Towards the edge of the cookie tray, where I can choose my future When surrounded by other cookies, I look like one of the bunch. However, when I’m alone, I’m different and unique In my own world, I am clouded by smoke and tough blows emerging from a clash between my dreams and my nightmares. Fighting to be remembered, even if it were to be for just five minutes but all I feel is heat, coming from the blast of the oven The oven, my imagination, my dream world the place that saves me from reality the place that takes me away from people eating me No one can take a bite out of me! No one…

By Carren Osorio Like the Weather

I am like the weather happy and joyful in the Spring angry and loud like the raging thunders

My heart can be as soft as the fresh white snow but it can be filled with hatred like a black tornado. I can be mean and cold like the most dreadful rainy days.

I show my sadness lie a dull dark day, but I can be as hyper and crazy as a hurricane crashing and breaking everything in my path, yet I can be still and quiet like a desert night on a cloudless day

I can be life giving like rain falling on a forest floor I can make the skies clear and let the sun shine through to bring a smile to your face.

I can make shores calm and peaceful, but I can also make them rage and devour the sand and my whispers like a soft wind can make one go to sleep.

By Brandon Diaz Like an Ocean

I am like an ocean wave thrashing beyond the shore seemingly quiet, but strong beyond words. On shore, I crash and spread, befriending the sand. Like me, the ocean soars through its beauty trying to find its inner self living for the beauty of the moment, skipping pebbles along the waterline a peaceful surrounding, yet coldness unfolds For each wave, a different me is shown: a child of fun, but an adult of maturity To bring you out of your comfort zone I can place you under a peaceful aura like the ocean, deep within, lies a valuable treasure waiting to be found by one who comes who carries the key Little waves guide my dreams Like water, I choose my direction, my path, my future and like water, the road may lead me to crash against a cliff Even when the water is still with the wind being the only movement in sight My waves still head toward the shore, bringing along with it the spirit of living through rain or shine, nothing can destroy my true self as I continue on

Carlos Mendes Like a Cloud Drifting Freely

I am like a cloud drifting freely in the sky meandering here and there I follow the wind wherever it goes People interpret me differently for I change shape I can be one thing for a moment but something else the next When my borders become too heavy for me to uphold I merely rain them all down to the Earth Becoming free of the shackles that bind me I continue my endless wandering through time However, where before there was a storm I now leave behind a rainbow.

By Peter Dang Like a Tortoise

I am like a tortoise waiting to get out of its shell always quiet, timid, and very patient on land unlike other animals who run as fast as they can without stopping.

Whenever I am shy or threatened by others, I hide in my shell and wait until they are gone

To reach my goal, I take it slowly and steady trying not to make any mistakes

I don’t get easily distracted by others for I continue doing what I’m doing

By Edgar Correos Like a Jack-in-the-Box

I am like a Jack-in-the-box— my mysterious appearance attracts the attention of many I can amuse, but I can cause fear and anger Like my tune, I am relaxed and timid, but when my handle triggers the springs that sets my insides free my mysterious appearance attracts the attention of many and for those who don’t know me, I bring them a big surprise!

By Randy Mathews A New Year, a New Break

As the new year begins, my love for you departs. A new year; a new break It is my chance to finally get over you and be free. Free of everything, free of all the lies.

I carry our memories together everyday It is finally time to let go of it all and just forget. Forget everything and all the tears that I cried for you, All the fights I fought to make us work—everything for nothing.

I was unappreciated and unloved. I did everything and you did not care. No respect, no friendship, only lies.

A new year, a new break A life without you

I now have no frown on my face. It has been replaced with a smile. I no longer cry, but I laugh. I no longer miss you, for you’ve been erased from my heart. I will no longer waste another second thinking of you

A new year, a new break

By Diana Ribeiro How to Survive School

Waking up early is a real pain Listening to teachers talk and talk and talk and talk all day.

They give us instructions They give us homework to do, and in the end, we don’t even do it

The classes are too long and lunch time is too short and when you get home you do homework that takes a long time

When you’re finally done you have to go to bed only to wake up early and start all over the next day...

ho is W sing- ing this song? Like a Wildfire

I am like a wild fire spreading across the forest, burning everything in its way. Often silent and quick to take advantage. Obstacles stand ahead unaware of the destiny and capability within my blaze. Freedom, success, ideas to overcome the odds fill my burning world. The fire within me remains strong in order to stay ahead in this competitive environment.

By Radek Wylupek Objectified

Oh what a life to live the treatment I get. I give them a place to write on and a place to sit. They write on my back and sit on my head. They stick gum on me when no one is looking. What would they do if I stuck gum in their hair? I should take a stand! leave them all sitting on the floor.

By Anna Sierra Just an Object

I’m Jordan left and this is Jordan right,. Together we are Jordan 21’s. Your feet stink, your feet stink! Please don’t put me on! Did you change your socks this morning? Well, it doesn’t seem like it. Are we going to play basketball today? Hurray! We’re going to see Nike, Adidas, Rebok, and if we’re lucky, maybe, a new balance. I hope that guy doesn’t step on me again. He made a dirty print on my beautiful black suede skin. Oh look, your locks of lace are untied Better tie them up. You don’t want to fall. Oh no! I told you that guy was going to step on me. Now, I need to take a shower. Lucky me, it’s raining outside. But the water is going to get inside. Then I have to be dried off somewhere dark. You’re going to sleep now. I should too. Back inside my beautiful grey box I can’t believe that guy stepped on me.

By Natasha Bautista The Photograph

The door opens with a constant silent creak Moonlight shines across the dark room The air is so cold I can almost feel warmth A breeze swishes across my cheek The tree branch bangs against the window like a gun shot I hear bells on the window hitting against each other softly.

On my left is a piano Many keys are missing Musical sheets are partially completed I can only imagine the person who lived here.

Memories of my room as a child flood in I reach for a picture under the piano and grab it quickly I take a deep breath swallow my saliva, my gulp audible I flip the picture over/= I see myself in the same room just as I am now.

I drop the picture My head racing I can no longer control my breathing It’s beyond my control I start racing for the door I want to leave the room Just as I’m about to leave the room From the corner of my eye I notice another picture It’s of me running Someone had photographed me I will never forget the look of fear in my face.

T een Spirit The Break-Up

Doves belong in the sky and you deserve to be high, so I don't belong with you-- and can no longer live this lie... I was in love with you-- and I was glad that you were mine; our lives became intertwined but now I want to loosen the tie.

Eyes water in a stream that seems to never dry; no end...yours...and mine. You may ask: "Why?" Why I must break your heart, after being with you for the longest time? It’s because I don't deserve your love, and you deserve better, all this with a sad sigh.

You were my lovely flower my world-- and when it was dark-- you were my light--

Now, as your heart breaks, your petals seem to fall, but you, lovely flower...please don't cry... don't wilt...stand tall...be beautiful and shine... shine and be someone else's light... don't grow dim...be bright…

By Laura Medeiros Her Eyes

As my eyes met hers, or perhaps, hers met mine; at that moment, our lives became intertwined. What were mere seconds felt more like an eternity of heavenly bliss, the bond known only when lovers kiss. Pure silence… Not one word… and for reasons unknown, I fell in love with her. She knew not my name, and as for me not knowing hers… the same. Like the rest of the world, even I consider falling in love with a complete stranger to be insane. but I did not care… for I wouldn't let anything stand in the way of her beautiful stare her hazel eyes… lashes long and curled… perfectly-shaped ovals… The eyes of the world's most beautiful girl… pure beauty naturally hers. Her perfection makes me wonder if she’s ―the one‖ the one I will spend the rest of my life with, the one who will be by my side when my life is done. I can only wonder: "Does she feel the same way?" and with that thought… her gaze goes astray… for my muse belongs to another she is still the property of the unity that is her Father and her Mother. I see her walk away from my life. all hope for romance lost… leaving me only with spite… but my hope for a future with her remains, I am hopeful to see her once again. once again to become a victim of her gaze and if not… then I’ll never again see her warm eyes. but till that day… the image of her eyes’ absolute beauty sticks in my mind…

They were out of bed at 5.30.a.m Full of enthusiasm they would do their work. That’s why I appreciate the work they do for us.

By Ronark Correia A Teacher

A teacher is the one who guides you through the years ahead A teacher is a person who teaches you something new everyday A teacher is a person who helps you when you don't understand something A teacher is someone you can trust

But most of all... you can look up to. A teacher is someone

By Tabatha Copping Hope

Hope is a new-born baby when you lose someone you love. Hope is a rainbow after a tragic storm. Hope is a smile when your world has been turned upside down. Hope is a treasure that cannot be taken away from you. Hope is believing in yourself when no one believes in you. Hope us taking a second to appreciate the beauty of life when the world is moving too fast. Hope is thinking out side the box and doing the impossible. Hope is the blossoming flower at the beginning of spring. Hope is in our hearts; all we have to do is find it. Hope is you and me; ready to burst out and change the world.

By Christine Nanteza Painful Love

I'm not sure if you know or not but I really do love you a lot. You hold a special place in my heart You did right from the start.

I thought I was the one you love but I feel it is not Every time I kiss your lips I feel so glad

I did not know that you had not moved on He is still inside your heart You are pretending to love me but the truth is you do not Now that I know the truth I feel so bad that you fooled me and played with my heart

I just keep silent and try to ignore the pain You keep saying his name and it causes me pain

I tried to hate you I can't help but love you Maybe someday it will fade or it will remain

By Julydelma De Ramos Shakespearean Sonnet

The ball in his hands with one minute left, He shoots very nervously to the basket, He makes it in while gasping for breath And gets back on defense all sweaty and wet.

He steals the ball then calls a time-out, to take a rest and slow things down, Then the coach starts yelling and screaming about, He feels so nervous and gets back playing with a frown.

His teammates say don’t be nervous we’ll get through this, and he gets the ball with the clock winding down, He takes a shot high in the air and gives it a kiss The ball rolls in and they win the game then start dancing like clowns.

From that day on he was never nervous, but always confident just like Elvis.

By Mark Gahite Distance

I look up at the sky, and smile remembering times that a special bond ties

I said good-bye, but I didn’t mean to say it right; you looked into my eyes, and I wished you were inside

I said I’d come back when I’d become fully grown; you nodded your head, and wished me good luck

I know it’s hard to leave a friend who’s been with you through ups and downs, but sometimes we need to be strong, in order to move on.

By Julydelma de Ramos All of the Above

St. Mary’s is a school on a mission, but sometimes we’re in need of a little motivation. Though many, we are stronger when we act as one, but we always know how to have fun!

Our one wish is to see everyone do their best, only then will we rest. No challenge is grander than to work together

Thank you, God, for the many gifts you’ve given us, We will try to use each one without a lot of fuss Let us never forget that You are why we are here Believing in You, we have nothing to fear

You walk with us even beneath Your light, You teach us not to argue, not to scream, not to fight But, above all, please help us, please, should we fall, Or after we trip, or when we drop the ball!

Prayer helps us focus on our best everyday Your love helps us do all of the above.

By Mr. Steve de Quintal You!

When you are sad, and you feel like you can't go on tears well in your eyes and the pain is so strong

So far from your friends and you're all on your own no one to run to so very alone

When all seems so useless and you can't take anymore as you put on your coat and head for the door

Remember...

I was there once lost, all alone You can cry in my ear, just pick up the phone

When you are lonely and feeling so blue, someone is thinking, thinking of you
