From ‘Education in Aberdeenshire before 1872 I Simpson, University of London 1947 For a long time after the reformation, many rural parishes lacked even a minister or reader not to speak of a schoolmaster. A Parliamentary Act of 1633 required the heritors of every parish to establish a school – many disregarded it. Further Act 1646 brought more pressure – still some evaded. Act of 1696 empowered Presbyteries in face of obstinate heritors to apply to Commissioners of Supply, who had power to establish a school and fix a salary of at least 100marks (?) 1598 In Methlick – At a visitation where officials of the parish kirk were examined no reference to a parish school or schoolmaster but “the catalogue off the eldaris and deaconis”. 3 names are prefixed by ‘Mr’, in those days always an academic, never a country title. Notes from Tarves School Log Books 1873 October 10th Principal Teacher Mr D M L Salmond M.A. Attendance 40 increased to 50 next day. November 6th Thanksgiving Day for the harvest consequently the school was closed. November 14th Fair progress made during the past week especially in writing, the pupils being given to understand that there must be neither blots nor miss-spellings in their copy books. The second class is being drilled in grammar in which great deficiency had been shown. December 29th Start of Christmas holidays. During the quarter now closed 115 pupils (1 teacher, 2 monitors) have been enrolled and the average daily attendance has been 88 187/1760. During the quarter Nelson’s Royal Readers were gradually introduces as text books.

  • 1696 Hearth Tax, Aberdeenshire Residents
1696 Poll Tax List for the North East of Scotland In the latter part of the 17th century, the Scottish economy was in poor shape. Among several unpopular taxes introduced during this period was the Poll Tax that imposed a tax on every person over 16 (14?) years of age and not a beggar. The list of persons in Aberdeenshire is supposedly the only complete county list in existence, and enumerates some 30,000 persons, although less than 100 of these are Brebner/Bremner individuals. I have transcribed the Brebner/Bremner and all variant spellings from the indexes published by the late Archie Strath Maxwell and found in the main public library in Aberdeen. The Aberdeen and NE Scotland Family History Society (ANESFHS) has a series of full transcriptions of many of the Aberdeenshire parishes available for purchase, and I would recommend these to anyone who has traced their ancestors back to this early period. Many of the 1696 parishes had different names and boundaries than their 19th century counterparts, although farm names are often continued through the centuries. In looking through the Brebner/Bremner entries for Aberdeenshire, I found it most interesting that some parishes in which the families were well represented in the 18th and 19th centuries had no entries in 1696. This suggests that the founding members of those families came from other parts of Aberdeenshire, or indeed from other parts of Scotland. Trying to match individuals in this population poll with corresponding births or christenings is hampered by the lack of Old Parish Registers for many of the under-mentioned parishes during that early time.

  • THE PINNING STONES Culture and Community in Aberdeenshire
THE PINNING STONES Culture and community in Aberdeenshire When traditional rubble stone masonry walls were originally constructed it was common practice to use a variety of small stones, called pinnings, to make the larger stones secure in the wall. This gave rubble walls distinctively varied appearances across the country depend- ing upon what local practices and materials were used. • Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Aberdeen, Scotland, United Kingdom
Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Aberdeen, Scotland, United Kingdom Aberdeen Royal Infirmary opened its doors to its first 4 patients in August 1742, and admitted 21 patients in its first year, tak- ing in people from the Northeast region of Scotland and beyond. The early 1800s saw huge changes take place, including the opening of a dedicated mental health hospital. In 1830, increasing demand on the Infirmary resulted in the construction of the Simpson Pavilion at the Woolmanhill site (top left), accommodating 230 patients. Early cardiology records from 1890 show an unidentified physician diagnosing mitral and aortic stenosis. Aberdeen graduate Augustus Désiré Waller conceptualized and recorded the world’s first ECG in 1887, and the first ECG machine was introduced at Woolmanhill in 1920. The New Aberdeen Royal Infirmary at Foresterhill opened in 1936 (aerial photo, top right), expanding over the last century to become one of the largest hospital complexes in Europe (bottom right). As the main teaching hospital of the University of Aberdeen (world’s fifth-oldest English-speaking University, established 1495), doctors and scientists work closely together in shared facilities. Aberdeen Royal Infirmary is home to many medical discoveries and innovations. In the early 1970s, John Mallard andJim Hutchinson pioneered the design and construction of the world’s first whole body magnetic resonance imaging scanner for clinical use (bottom left). Development of the next generation of the technology (fast field cycling magnetic reso- nance imaging) continues here today. In collaboration with general practitioners, Aberdeen cardiologists pioneered prehospital thrombolysis for acute myocardial infarction in the prepercutaneous intervention era.
