Gatten This bibliography updates two extensive works designed to include comprehensively all significant works by and about Woody Guthrie. Richard A. Reuss published A Woody Guthrie Bibliography, 1912–1967 in 1968 and Jeffrey N. Gatten’s article “Woody Guthrie: A Bibliographic Update, 1968–1986” appeared in 1988. With this current article, researchers need only utilize these three bibliographies to identify all English- language items of relevance related to, or written by, Guthrie. Introduction Woodrow Wilson Guthrie (1912–67) was a singer, musician, composer, author, artist, radio personality, columnist, activist, and philosopher. By now, most anyone with interest knows the shorthand version of his biography: refugee from the Oklahoma dust bowl, California radio show performer, New York City socialist, musical documentarian of the Northwest, merchant marine, and finally decline and death from Huntington’s chorea. -

The Banjo NEWSLETTER Old-Time Way Review, April 2014 Johnson City Recordings, Bear Family CDs By Timothy Jones Some recordings are important more than they are listenable. Lower-tech sound quality, by-gone vocal styles, and primitive instrumental playing can make some early releases an acquired taste. "The Johnson City Sessions, 1928-1929: Can You Sing or Play Old-Time Music?" might fit into that category. But among the 100 cuts of the new four-CD boxed set from Bear Family Records are riches and rough-cut gems. It's important to note for readers of this publication that only a quarter of the tracks contain banjo (not counting the occasional mandolin-banjo). Still, in the five hours of music here, to say nothing of the accompanying hardcover book, there is much to inform and interest old-time listeners and banjo players. The earlier, better-known 1927 Bristol (TN) sessions sponsored by Victor Records helped launch the likes of Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family, and in 2011 those sessions likewise saw release in an acclaimed Bear Family boxed set. Now, with this late-2013 release, the recordings made for Columbia Records in nearby Johnson City in 1928 and 1929 capture another slice of Southern music from the late 1920s. The title, "Can You Sing or Play Old-Time Music," comes from the lead line in an October 1928 newspaper ad calling area musicians to participate in "an actual try-out for the purpose of making Columbia Records." The ad got wide exposure, and come they did-from neighboring counties and several states around Tennessee. -

Lee When poet-activist Ed Sanders published the first issue of his “Marijuana Newsletter” in 1964, cannabis legaliza- tion was not on America’s political radar. “Time is NOW for a Total Assault on the Marijuana Laws!” Sanders declared. “We have the facts! Cannabis is a non-addictive gentle peace drug!” Calling for “an in- telligent, sensitive public campaign” to change the law, Sanders advocated “pot-ins at government headquarters, public forums and squawking, poster walks, hemp farm disobedience.” For these early marijuana activists, the “Hemp is the WAY!” he proclaimed. “Old Time Music at Clarence Ashley's”--Doc Watson, Clarence Ashley, et.al. (1960-1962) Added to the National Registry: 2012 Essay by Steve Kaufman (guest post)* Album cover In 1960, Smithsonian historian Ralph Rinzler convinced the virtually unknown Clarence “Tom” Ashley, Doc Watson, Gather Carlton, Jack Johnson, Fred Price and Clint Howard to walk into the studio and record their mountain heritage music. Ralph Rinzler met Clarence at an Old Time Fiddler’s Convention. Ashley hadn’t played banjo for many years, but Ralph convinced him to pick it back up again and record it. Doc Watson didn’t own an acoustic guitar at the time. He had been playing in a rockabilly band playing square dances and the like. Doc honed his instrumental skills playing fiddle tunes on the guitar. Doc told me that the square dance bands he played in did not have a fiddle player so he played the tune as the fiddle would. This combination of Clarence on banjo and Doc on guitar and banjo, along with Fred Price and Gaither Carlton on fiddle, make an old-time band that is authentic and powerful. Seventeen songs make up this collection, of which T. Clarence Ashley wrote nine. It seems odd that he would credit the song as being by T.C. Ashley. He would credit his singing as Tom Ashley. Doc would credit him as Clarence throughout Doc’s long career. I’ve heard Doc mention Clarence on many occasions. These are the original tracks to this classic “Old Time” recording. It was recorded in Shouns, Tennessee; Saltville, Virginia; and Deep Gap, North Carolina.
