(Astronomy Picture of the Day, 이하 APOD)사이트는 1995년 6월 16일 첫번째 천체사진을 발표한 이래, 지금까지 하루도 빠짐없이 천체관련 사진 또는 동영상을 발표하고 있습니다. 출처 : NASA - 오늘의 천체사진(2013년 5월 1일 자) http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap130501.html 참고 : NGC 5139에 대한 또다른 포스트 http://blog.daum.net/bigcrunch/11277833 http://blog.daum.net/bigcrunch/11384529 http://blog.daum.net/bigcrunch/12345631 http://blog.daum.net/bigcrunch/12345740 http://blog.daum.net/bigcrunch/12345818 원문> Ome ga Ce ntauri: The B righte s t Glo bular Clus te r Image Cre dit & Co pyright: Joaquin Polleri & Ezequiel Etcheverry (Observatorio Panameo en San Pedro de Atacama) Explanatio n: This huge ball of stars predates our Sun. Long before humankind evolved, before dinosaurs roamed, and even before our Earth existed, ancient globs of stars condensed and orbited a young Milky Way Galaxy. Of the 200 or so globular clusters that survive today, Omega Centauri is the largest, containing over ten million stars. Omega Centauri is also the brightest globular cluster, at apparent visual magnitude 3.9 it is visible to southern observers with the unaided eye. Cataloged as NGC 5139, Omega Centauri is about 18,000 light-years away and 150 light-years in diameter. Unlike many other globular clusters, the stars in Omega Centauri show several different ages and trace chemical abundances, indicating that the globular star cluster has a complex history over its 12 billion year age. 출처 : NASA - 오늘의 천체사진(2013년 5월 2일 자) http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap130502.html 참고 : 토성 북극 회오리바람에 대한 또다른 포스트 http://blog.daum.net/bigcrunch/12346360 원문> S aturn Hurric ane Image Cre dit: Cassini Imaging Team, SSI, JPL, ESA, NASA Explanatio n: Acquiring its first sunlit views of far northern Saturn late last year, the Cassini spacecraft's narrow-angle camera recorded this stunning image of the vortex at the ringed planet's north pole. The false color, near-infrared image results in red hues for low clouds and green for high ones, causing the north-polar hurricane to take on the appearance of a rose. Enormous by terrestrial hurricane standards, this storm's eye is about 2,000 kilometers wide, with clouds at the outer edge traveling at over 500 kilometers per hour. The north pole Saturn hurricane swirls inside the large, six-sided weather pattern known as the hexagon. Of course, in 2006 Cassini also imaged the hurricane at Saturn's south pole. 출처 : NASA - 오늘의 천체사진(2013년 5월 3일 자) http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap130503.html 참고 : 말머리성운과 주변 천체에 관한 또다른 포스트 http://blog.daum.net/bigcrunch/10396085 http://blog.daum.net/bigcrunch/10624304 http://blog.daum.net/bigcrunch/11167732 http://blog.daum.net/bigcrunch/11177029 http://blog.daum.net/bigcrunch/12345610 http://blog.daum.net/bigcrunch/12345611 http://blog.daum.net/bigcrunch/12345625 http://blog.daum.net/bigcrunch/12345642 http://blog.daum.net/bigcrunch/12345744 http://blog.daum.net/bigcrunch/12345837 http://blog.daum.net/bigcrunch/12345904 http://blog.daum.net/bigcrunch/12345953 http://blog.daum.net/bigcrunch/12346550 http://blog.daum.net/bigcrunch/12346882 참고 : 허빅-하로(Herbig-Haro)천체에 대한 또다른 포스트 http://blog.daum.net/bigcrunch/12346520 http://blog.daum.net/bigcrunch/12346159 http://blog.daum.net/bigcrunch/12346178 http://blog.daum.net/bigcrunch/12346777 http://blog.daum.net/bigcrunch/12346811 http://blog.daum.net/bigcrunch/12346857 http://blog.daum.net/bigcrunch/12347068 말머리 성운과 그 주변 • 16 http://blog.daum.net/bigcrunch/12347069 http://blog.daum.net/bigcrunch/12347075 참고 : 허빅-하로 천체등 별에 대한 각종 포스트는 하기 링크 INDEX를 통해 확인할 수 있습니다. http://blog.daum.net/bigcrunch/12346972 원문> Ho rs e he ad: A Wide r Vie w Composition and Processing: Robert Gendler Image Data: ESO, VISTA, HLA, Hubble Heritage Team (STScI/AURA) Explanatio n: Combined image data from the massive, ground-based VISTA telescope and the Hubble Space Telescope was used to create this wide perspective of the interstellar landscape surrounding the famous Horsehead Nebula. Captured at near-infrared wavelengths, the region's dusty molecular cloud sprawls across the scene that covers an angle about two-thirds the size of the Full Moon on the sky. Left to right the frame spans just over 10 light- years at the Horsehead's estimated distance of 1,600 light-years. Also known as Barnard 33, the still recognizable Horsehead Nebula stands at the upper right, the near-infrared glow of a dusty pillar topped with newborn stars.

GRB 190114C is richer than GRB 130427A: a large percentage of ∼ 30% energy is thermal presenting in the gamma-ray prompt emission, mak- ing it as one of the most thermal-prominent GRBs; Moreover, GRB 190114C extends the horizon of GRB research, that for the first time the ultra-high energy TeV emission (> 300 GeV) is detected in a GRB as reported by the MAGIC team. Furthermore, GRB 190114C urges us to revisit the traditional theoretical framework, since most of the GRB’s energy may emit in the GeV and TeV range, not in the conventional MeV range.

  • CERN Courier – Digital Edition Welcome to the Digital Edition of the April 2017 Issue of CERN Courier
I NTERNATIONAL J OURNAL OF H IGH -E NERGY P HYSICS CERNCOURIER WELCOME V OLUME 5 7 N UMBER 3 A PRIL 2 0 1 7 CERN Courier – digital edition Welcome to the digital edition of the April 2017 issue of CERN Courier. Theory in motion Few scientific disciplines enjoy such a close connection with mathematics as particle physics, and at the heart of this relationship lies quantum field theory. Quantum electrodynamics famously predicts quantities, such as the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron, which agree with observations at the level of 10 decimal places, while the Higgs boson existed on paper half a century before the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) flushed it out for real. Driven by the strong performance of the LHC experiments, there has been a burst of activity in recent months concerning next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) calculations in quantum chromodynamics to ensure that theory keeps up with the precision of LHC measurements. As the cover feature in this issue explains, cracking the complex NNLO problem demands novel algorithms, mathematical ingenuity and computational muscle. Theorists are also trying to make sense of a number of “exotic” hadrons that have turned up in recent years in experiments such as LHCb and which do not naturally fit the simple quark model. Sticking with the strong-force theme, we also report on 30 years of heavy-ion physics and how recent measurements at the LHC and RHIC are closing in on the evolution of the quark–gluon plasma. Finally, we describe new forward detectors that from this year will allow the LHC to analyse photon–photon collisions in the ongoing search for new physics.

  • Monte Carlo Simulations of GRB Afterglows
ABSTRACT WARREN III, DONALD CAMERON. Monte Carlo Simulations of Efficient Shock Acceleration during the Afterglow Phase of Gamma-Ray Bursts. (Under the direction of Donald Ellison.) Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) signal the violent death of massive stars, and are the brightest ex- plosions in the Universe since the Big Bang itself. Their afterglows are relics of the phenomenal amounts of energy released in the blast, and are visible from radio to X-ray wavelengths up to years after the event. The relativistic jet that is responsible for the GRB drives a strong shock into the circumburst medium that gives rise to the afterglow. The afterglows are thus intimately related to the GRB and its mechanism of origin, so studying the afterglow can offer a great deal of insight into the physics of these extraordinary objects. Afterglows are studied using their photon emission, which cannot be understood without a model for how they generate cosmic rays (CRs)—subatomic particles at energies much higher than the local plasma temperature. The current leading mechanism for converting the bulk energy of shock fronts into energetic particles is diffusive shock acceleration (DSA), in which charged particles gain energy by randomly scattering back and forth across the shock many times. DSA is well-understood in the non-relativistic case—where the shock speed is much lower than the speed of light—and thoroughly-studied (but with greater difficulty) in the relativistic case. At both limits of speed, DSA can be extremely efficient, placing significant amounts of energy into CRs. This must, in turn, affect the structure of the shock, as the presence of the CRs upstream of the shock acts to modify the incoming plasma flow.

  • An Analysis of the Environment and Gas Content of Luminous Infrared Galaxies
Abstract Title of Dissertation: An Analysis of the Environment and Gas Content of Luminous Infrared Galaxies Bevin Ashley Zauderer, Doctor of Philosophy, 2010 Dissertation directed by: Professor Stuart N. Vogel Department of Astronomy Luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (U/LIRGs) represent a population among the most extreme in our universe, emitting an extraordinary amount of energy at infrared wavelengths from dust heated by prolific star formation and/or an active galactic nucleus (AGN). We present three investigations of U/LIRGs to better understand their global environment, their interstellar medium properties, and their nuclear region where molecular gas feeds a starburst or AGN. To study the global environment, we compute the spatial cluster-galaxy amplitude, Bgc, for 76 z < 0.3 ULIRGs. We find the environment of ULIRGs is similar to galaxies in the field. Comparing our results with other galactic populations, we conclude that ULIRGs might be a phase in the lives of AGNs and QSOs, but not all moderate-luminosity QSOs necessarily pass through a ULIRG phase. To study the interstellar medium properties, we observe H I and other spectral lines in 77 U/LIRGs with the Arecibo telescope. We detect H I in emission or absorption in 61 of 77 galaxies, 52 being new detections. We compute the implied gas mass for galaxies with emission, and optical depths and column densities for the seven sources with absorption detections. To study the molecular gas in the nuclear region of LIRG Arp 193, sub-arcsecond scale angular resolution is required and a method of atmospheric phase correction imperative. We present results of a large experiment observing bright quasars to test the limitations of the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter Astronomy’s Paired Antenna Calibration System (C-PACS) for atmospheric phase correction.
