Through ethnographic observation, it establishes a spectrum of practices between two main traditions, namely the antique beatas and the modern missionary congregations. The article argues that Chinese nuns create forms of religious life that are quite distinct from more universal Catholic standards: their congregations are always diocesan and involved in multiple forms of apostolate. Despite the little attention they receive, Chinese nuns demonstrate how Chinese Catholics are creative in their appropriation of Christian traditions and their response to social and economic changes. Keywords: christianity in China; catholicism; religious life; gender studies Surveys from 2015 suggest that in the People’s Republic of China, there are 3170 Catholic religious women who belong to 87 registered religious congregations, while 1400 women belong to 37 unregistered ones.1 Thus, there are approximately 4570 Catholics nuns in China, for a general Catholic population that fluctuates between eight to ten million. However, little is known about these women and their forms of religious life, the challenges of their lifestyle, and their current difficulties. Who are those women? How does their religious life manifest and evolve within a rapidly changing Chinese society? What do they tell us about the Catholic Church in China? This paper explores the various forms of religious life in Catholic China to understand how Chinese women appropriate and translate Catholic religious ideals. -
Understanding the Response to Portuguese Missionary Methods in India in the 16Th – 17Th Centuries
UNDERSTANDING THE RESPONSE TO PORTUGUESE MISSIONARY METHODS IN INDIA IN THE 16TH – 17TH CENTURIES Christianity has had a very long history in the sub-continent. Even if the traditional belief of the arrival of one of the apostles of Jesus, St. Thomas is discounted, there is evidence to prove that Christian merchants from west Asia had sailed and settled on the west coast of India in the early centuries of the present era. Catholic missionaries, mainly of the Franciscan order arrived as early as the 13th century, in the northern reaches of the Indian west coast. Some of them were, in medieval terminology, even “martyred” for the faith.1 The arrival of the Portuguese, with their padroado (patronage) privileges however marks the first large-scale appearance of Christian missionaries in India. Despite such a longstanding Christian tradition the focus of Church history writing in India, in the context of it being written as a form of ‘mission history’ has always been on the agency, the agents and their work. This has meant that the overarching emphasis has been on the mission bodies, their practices and when it has concentrated on the local bodies, the numbers they were able to convert. Conversion stories have also been narrated, yet it is done with the view to highlight the activities of the mission and their underlying role in bringing about that conversion. This overemphasis on the work of the converting agencies was no doubt the consequence of the need to legitimize their work as well as the need for further financial and other forms of aid, but it has had several implications. -

Figures and/or pictures may be missing from this format of the document.*** As Robert Clark notes in The Global Imperative, "there is no doubt that trade networks like the Silk Road made possible the flourishing and spread of ancient civilizations to something approximating a global culture of the times."1 Goods, people and ideas all travelled along these long-distance routes spanning or circumventing the vast landmass of Eurasia. From earliest times, there have been three main routes, which connected China with the outside world.2 These were the overland routes that stretched across Eurasia from China to the Mediterranean, known collectively as the "Silk Road"; the Spice Trade shipping routes passing from the South China Sea into the Indian Ocean and beyond, known today as the "Maritime Silk Road"; and the "Southwestern Silk Road," a network of overland passages stretching from Central China through the mountainous areas of Sichuan, Guizhou and Yunnan provinces into the eastern states of South Asia. Although the first two routes are better known to students of World History, the Southwestern Silk Road has a long ancestry and also played an important role in knitting the world together. -

Chinese Protestant Christianity Today Daniel H. Bays ABSTRACT Protestant Christianity has been a prominent part of the general religious resurgence in China in the past two decades. In many ways it is the most striking example of that resurgence. Along with Roman Catholics, as of the 1950s Chinese Protestants carried the heavy historical liability of association with Western domi- nation or imperialism in China, yet they have not only overcome that inheritance but have achieved remarkable growth. Popular media and human rights organizations in the West, as well as various Christian groups, publish a wide variety of information and commentary on Chinese Protestants. This article first traces the gradual extension of interest in Chinese Protestants from Christian circles to the scholarly world during the last two decades, and then discusses salient characteristics of the Protestant movement today. These include its size and rate of growth, the role of Church–state relations, the continuing foreign legacy in some parts of the Church, the strong flavour of popular religion which suffuses Protestantism today, the discourse of Chinese intellectuals on Christianity, and Protestantism in the context of the rapid economic changes occurring in China, concluding with a perspective from world Christianity. Protestant Christianity has been a prominent part of the general religious resurgence in China in the past two decades. Today, on any given Sunday there are almost certainly more Protestants in church in China than in all of Europe.1 One recent thoughtful scholarly assessment characterizes Protestantism as “flourishing” though also “fractured” (organizationally) and “fragile” (due to limits on the social and cultural role of the Church).2 And popular media and human rights organizations in the West, as well as various Christian groups, publish a wide variety of information and commentary on Chinese Protestants. -

religions Article Thirty Years of Mission in Taiwan: The Case of Presbyterian Missionary George Leslie Mackay Magdaléna Rychetská Asia Studies Centre, Department of Chinese Studies, Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University, 602 00 Brno, Czech Republic; [email protected] Abstract: The aims of this paper are to analyze the missionary endeavors of the first Canadian Presbyterian missionary in Taiwan, George Leslie Mackay (1844–1901), as described in From Far Formosa: The Islands, Its People and Missions, and to explore how Christian theology was established among and adapted to the Taiwanese people: the approaches that Mackay used and the missionary strategies that he implemented, as well as the difficulties that he faced. Given that Mackay’s missionary strategy was clearly highly successful—within 30 years, he had built 60 churches and made approximately 2000 converts—the question of how he achieved these results is certainly worth considering. Furthermore, from the outset, Mackay was perceived and received very positively in Taiwan and is considered something of a folk hero in the country even today. IJT 46/1&2 (2004), pp. 59-66 Francis Xavier and Portuguese Administration in India James Elisha* Introduction Francis Xavier's attitude to and relationship with the Portuguese colonial administration had been consistently cordial and was based on mutuality of seeking their help for his mission and reciprocating his services in their trade embassies. He found Portuguese presence in India to be advantageous and helpful for his purpose of 'spreading Catholic Christianity to people of other faiths and Malabar Christians.1 Joao III, the king of Portugal, was supportive of the efforts of Xavier to Christianize the people of other faiths and to latinize2 the Malabar Christians in India. Rupture was not very obvious except when conduct and decisions of some administrators were found by Xav,:ier to be detrimental to the process. Xavier used his relationship with the Portugeyl king for his cause and of the Society rather discriminately. ' Xavie~' s relationship with the colonial administration in the coasts of India cannot be studied in isolation with his cordial relationships with the King of Portugal prior to his arrivp} to India in 1542. His cordiality with the Portuguese administrators was just a continuation of his relationship with the court. Xavier utilized his authority from the King to his cause of spreading Catholic Christianity, to oppose the Portugal officials whose presence was a liability to his cause, and to defend the converted communities. He was not uncritically supportive of the Portugal administrators in the land and his relationship with them after his arrival were highly regulated by the sense of a mission from the King and the Pope, and with an added vigor of being a consolation to the local converts. -

WHITE JADE RING AND QUEEN MOTHER OF THE WEST As for the foundation and succession myths of early Chinese dynasties, Allan holds that “Ancient Chinese literature contains few myths in the traditional sense of stories of the supernatural but much history” (Allan, 1981: ix) and “history, as it appears in the major texts from the classical period of early China (fifth-first centuries B.C.),has come to function like myth” (Allan, 1981: 10). While “the problem of myth for Western philosophers is a problem of interpreting the meaning of myths and the phenomenon of myth-making” as Allan remarks, “the problem of myth for the sinologist is one of finding any myths to interpret and of explaining why there are so few.” (Allen, 1991: 19) To decode why white jade enjoys a prominent position in the Chinese culture, the underlying conceptual structure and unique culture genes should be investigated. -

Staffan Rosén Sino-European Encounters – The Long-term Perspective In this brief paper I shall be dealing with Sino-European encounters by land, mainly – but not exclusively - from a European position. As we move forward in time I shall narrow down the scope from a European to a North European and Swedish horizon. According to a Greek source from the 5th century BC, ascribed to Ktesias of Knidos, who had spent many years as a prisoner of war in Persia, we learn that the Seres and the Indoi of the North are people of such high stature that one meets persons with 13 elbows, and they live for more than 200 years. Both the text and its content are obviously very confused and may originally refer to India rather than to China. Be that as it may. What is important is that we here meet the name Σηρεσ for the first time in the classical literature of the Mediterranean world. The origin and etymology of the ethnonym Seres is much debated and remains unclear in its details to this day. With time it became more and more connected to a great but unknown and fabulous country at the extreme east of the known world – a country which produced the most famous of all imported products – the silk. It is quite possible that the ethnonym Seres somehow is connected to the word, or rather one of the words, for silk. What we do know for sure however, is that at the dawn of Western-Eastern commercial relations the term Seres did not indicate China or the Chinese but rather one of the minor peoples at the North-Western border of China, the Wu-sun 烏孫, who served as the first “relay-station” of the caravan routes from China proper to the Mediterranean world.
