Gianni Versace

Five exceptionnal dresses dated 1991-1992 will revive the golden age of one of the greatest stylist of the 20th century. Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the designer’s departure, his sister Donatella paid a beautiful tribute to her brother when she organised the 2018 Spring/Summer collection. Indeed, she based her collection on Versace’s most iconic pieces and paterns, notably using the Vogue and the Marylin dresses, the cotte de maille and starfish pattern. All four original pieces will be offered during the auction.

These five iconic dresses epitomize a large part of Versace’s spectre of creation. Indeed, Gianni had always considered patterns as an essential part of his designs, digging into his memories, his feelings and his passion for Art. He would compare his dresses to artists’ canvases, depicting their time through their creations : « When I began working, I thought it was my duty to depict our time ».

He considered as a soul mate. His love for Pop Art gave birth to multiple creations, including the celebrated dress where Marylin Monroe and James Dean’s faces are gathered as a pattern and another famous dress that assembles Vogue Magazine’s covers. Versace chose original images that Warhol had created in the 1960’s to create his own designs.

Finally, embroidery had always been central in Versace’s collections, ever since his childhood when his mother was herself a designer. The Swarowski gems embroidered on the Panther dress are a strong example of Versace’s quest for glare, as Anna Wintour described.

Comme des Garçons

As New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art retrospective on Rei Kawakubo’s œuvre just ended, a dozen pieces by Comme des Garçons will also be featured in the sale.

Since 1969, the Japanese designer questions the western codes of beauty by reinventing the shapes of both the body and the clothes. Liberated from these codes of fashion, the artist creates a new style for each of her collections, making clothes as sculptures.
